The Daily Show must go on, even though its leader Trevor Noah surprised everybody by saying he would exit stage left on December 8. Rumors have been swirling about who will be tapped as the next host–and whether that host will be chosen from the current crop of correspondents–since Noah’s initial announcement. Now it seems that the rumor mill will keep churning, as Comedy Central has put off picking a permanent replacement by tapping several temporary guest hosts.

When the series returns from hiatus on January 17, 2023, it will feature a diverse collection of celebrity hosts at the helm, per The Hollywood Reporter. The list so far includes Chelsea Handler, D.L. Hughley, Leslie Jones, John Leguizamo, Kal Penn, Sarah Silverman, Wanda Sykes and Marlon Wayans. Hasan Minhaj, a Daily Show alum who went on to host his own political comedy show on Netflix, is also among the crop of guest hosts. So is Al Franken, the comedian and former Saturday Night Live writer who resigned from the Senate in 2018 after sexual misconduct allegations.

As THR notes, many of these performers, including Minhaj, Penn, Handler, and Silverman, have experience hosting similar programs. According to the outlet, “They are also said to have varying levels of interest—from a whole lot to very little at all—in hosting The Daily Show as a full-time gig.”

The network appears to be keeping its options open for The Daily Show’s future, as it has also been suggested the next iteration could have multiple hosts. For now, top brass are focused on this immediate transition. “As we enter Trevor’s final week, we want to thank him for his many contributions,” Paramount Media Networks CEO Chris McCarthy said in a statement (per THR). “Trevor redefined the show, as did Jon Stewart before him, and as we look to the future, we are excited to reimagine it yet again with the help of this incredible list of talent and correspondents along with the immensely talented Daily Show team.”

And in the end, it will turn out that they hire Mike Richards on as permanent host.I sort of like the idea of Kal Penn hosting. Al Franken also seems like a good fit, but probably a little too smug and pessimistic, even for TDS. At the very least, he’s probably not so busy these days.

Honestly like none of these comedians are super appealing. I like or have liked pretty much all of them at some point, but this does not feel fresh and like I would start watching again. I guess that’s the issue though: you try and get someone new and it feels like you’re going for a flash in the pan who won’t have staying power and doesn’t fit (Lilly Singh). I just think of Jon Stewart and what made him work, and I feel like it was that he didn’t have a huge built up persona besides a kind of generic host/side character in random movies and he became the Daily Show guy.Hassan is the most appealing, but I feel like he does better and more interesting with his own format, I wouldn’t want him to go backwards.

what a weird list of has-beens.

Is Hasan Minhaj as annoying in general as he was on his dipshit Celebrity Jeopardy appearance? Because that was fucking interminable

Ask Nur Ibrahim, Sheila V. Kumar, Camille Kopischke, or Amy Zhang.

Instead of being smug and dismissive, take a small amount of time to sample some of his work via the hours and hours of material readily available on netflix and youtube.

lol i’m smug because i have an opinion you don’t like, okaybut you’re correct about dismissive, not sure why that’s a problem

Sarah Silverman wore blackface in the past, not sure she has faced many consequences for it.  I think she lost one role?  But nobody branded her a racist.  I guess it’s just (D)ifferent.

boy, does that sound incredibly bland. A satire show with no clear vision, what could possibly go wrong.

You telling me Sarah Silverman won’t have a sophisticated grasp on current events?? Frankly none of these hosts seem like someone who will bring any meaningful perspective whatsoever.

Whomever.I have no idea if that is correct, I just love making corrections about things of which I know little aka the motto of The AV Club

    Bring back Craig Kilborn!

Al Franken seems to be a good choice. Obviously has experience doing TV and comedy, and also has the political experience to know how to question guests when they need to be questioned, plus the political experience to back it up with actual firsthand knowledge. Also it will really piss off both conservatives and liberals alike, so I dig that.

Al Franken was famously desperate to be the Weekend Update anchor on SNL, across multiple decades (I believe the closest he ever got was being runner-up to Norm MacDonald). I’ll at least tune in to see what he does when finally given the chance.

I don’t see Wanda Sykes, Marlon Wayans, or John Leguizamo doing it long-term. Chelsea Handler and Sarah Silverman are interesting, but I think they’d want to reinvent the show a bit more than the audience is going to want. Chelsea told Seth Meyers recently that she’s ready to get back into the game, though. D.L. Hughley is a wildcard. I haven’t seen much of him recently. Leslie Jones is an interesting choice, but again, I haven’t follow her closely since she left SNL. Al Franken is a possibility, but I don’t know that he’d bring in the youth demo as much as Comedy Central would require. He seems like he’d be a really interesting special correspondent similar to what Lewis Black does.Kal Penn seems like the dark horse candidate. His work on the Obama campaign and administration makes him well-connected to the political sphere. He could be TOO connected though.Hasan Minhaj seems like the number one choice out of these guest hosts. I really liked him when he was on The Daily Show before, and his own show was great as well. From the current crop of correspondents, Roy Wood Jr. seems to be the front-runner and I’m here for it, but I also like Ronnie Chieng, Desi Lydic, and Jordan Klepper’s chances. I guess it depends on how much they blame Klepper for the failure of his short-lived spin-off. As much as I love Dulcé Sloan and Michael Kosta, I think they’re on the outside looking in here. I do love Sloan’s “Dul-Sayin’” segments, and they show she might be ready to carry the show.

Since the Mike Richards joke has been made already, I propose that they bring back that Jon Daily guy.

Hasan is brilliant. He had the best show of a TDS alumni. Michelle Wolf would be great too. I expect Al to be funny as usual. Silverman and Leguizamo will be funny.
