Jon Stewart looks at the hypocrisy of cancel culture in a segment that lets him do what he does best: Analyze and criticize conservative media

Jon Stewart returned to his desk tonight ready to talk about the fifth most important news story of the day: The so-called cancelation of Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker. Butker recently gave one of those classy commencement speeches in which he touched on the “deadly sin” of LGBTQ+ Pride, encouraged female graduates to consider homemaking their duty, and engaged in some light antisemitism. But the content of his speech isn’t what inspired Stewart’s segment. It’s how conservative media reacted to it, which was to say that the left was coming for Butker. That they might already have him. That they might come for you next.
Yeah, fearmongering about cancel culture is all the rage these days, but Stewart argues that cancel culture mostly exists on the right. It’s a tool to sell airport books with titles like Triggered, Canceled, and Wake Up, Wokes! You’re Broke, You Joke, And Your Love Life’s DOA. What the likes of Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham are reacting to and monetizing is outrage. This isn’t anything new. We’re far too deep into the latest “pivot to video” not to know that’s how social media has operated for more than a decade.
Nevertheless, Stewart believes that Jerry Seinfeld caught more shit for releasing a Pop-Tart movie than Butker, which is a little rich considering Seinfeld is actually getting shit for complaining about “PC crap” from “the extreme left” ruining comedy. And what’s the deal with that? Is it only fake cancel culture outrage when Fox News does it? But we digress. The only actual cancel culture, Stewart says, comes from former President Donald Trump because any time a conservative dares criticize him, their professional lives suffer.
The whole argument gives Stewart a chance to do what he does best: disect the hypocrisy of Fox News. Watching Stewart pick apart Hannity’s performance is like watching Slash play the guitar solo to “November Rain.” It’s simply what the man does best. So, while saying “conservative media is hypocritical” is like calling water “wet,” when Stewart cuts to Representative Elise Stefanik tying herself into a knot like she’s Olga from Suspiria to defend a Trump gaffe, it just hits different.
“On the right, you can say whatever the fuck you want about gay people and trans people, from TikTok to Patreon,” Stewart says. “You can decry DEI on podcasts to, I don’t know, the governor’s office of Flordia, and chances are, not only will you be fine, you’ll get a raise. But if you dare speak one iota against Donald Trump, be, yes, afraid.”

What Stewart seems to be overlooking, maybe intentionally, is that cancel culture is often a set of norms enforced by a particular community, with violators chiefly punished by that community. So yes, many Republicans are clearly afraid to cross Trump because they operate in ecosystems that mostly consist of Republicans, whereas I or probably most people reading this could say whatever we want about Trump and face no consequences. But all that’s to say is that there is absolutely a version of that on the left, and if you want to argue that the consequences are worse for Republicans who stand up to Trump, that’s fine, it varies from case to case. But to insist, as so many self-styled progressives do, that it’s purely a right-wing phenomenon is bordering on delusional. At one point post-Daily Show, Stewart seemed to actually flirt with criticizing the overreach of his own side when relevant, which is of course when so many leftists turned on him. As far as I can tell from things like this, he seems to have been successfully re-educated.
He didn’t seem afraid of criticism from Biden supporters his first episode back.
I’ll happily defer to people who have watched more of him after coming back to the show, but hopefully he’s more willing than I thought to call out both sides when they do something worth criticizing.

His first episode out of the gate alarmed a lot of progressive fans (me included) because it was heavy on Biden-bashing. As a since-his-MTV-show fan, I wasn’t surprised at it, but was disappointed that he lead with that. In this latest incidence, I’m not really surprised either that he didn’t call out Seinfeld’s hypocrisy. He’s equally non-committal about Chapelle. Perhaps it’s some fraternal thing between older comics. Disappointing but not fatal.
And I still remember how everyone freaked the fuck out about it here. That comment section after his first show – in its complete lack of self-awareness was Onion-level satirical. I knew we’d get past it, but even ‘the good guys’ gotta check ourselves now and then. I hate feeling tangentially embarrassed by the kneejerk, extreme “purist” left. I mean when we’re viciously attacking Jon Freaking Stewart, it’s time to take a walk outside and regroup.
Jon doesn’t strike me as fitting neatly into either the “leftist” or “moderate Democrat” labels, which opens him up to criticism from both groups. Leftists had been turning on him in recent years for being too mainstream, but since Biden’s more centrist I think it was the moderates who were most critical of Jon for criticizing Biden.
I think it’s younger people who remain blissfully unaware of the day to day grind that was the GWB/ Dick Cheney years and the horrors of the post-911 mentality and the Iraq War Lies and gaslighting.Jon Stewart fought the great fight every single night and he’s still fighting it in post-Trump, post truth America. The man goes to Congress and gets bills passed and he shames them to their faces. So, yeah, I don’t care that he calls Biden old and neither should you or anyone else. He’s smarter than all of us. Have faith.

Right, so “cancel culture” is mostly just one community setting the norms for themselves, and so it’s perfectly understandable that Republicans would be using this method to monitor and discipline themselves. And also, the left successfully cancelled Jon Stewart because as someone who claims to be unable to keep up with just one episode a week can clearly see, he’s been re-educated following his attempt to speak freely.
It’s not so much wrong, as it is complete nonsense. What about the existential threat to free speech that the actual grifters in the video are prognosticating? Did you not even bother to watch all fifteen minutes of this video? It doesn’t sound like they’re complaining that the left is censoring themselves. Cancel culture is an issue that really isn’t exclusive to either side, and trying to pin it on one specific group is all too convenient to people like Matt Schimkowitz that are seemingly oblivious to their role as cogs in the outrage machine… it’s a tool that anybody with axe to grind can use in bad faith regardless of political affiliation. What does seem to be happening is that conservatives have disingenuously made being “anti-cancel culture” part of their narrative (despite using it all the time), and rather than pointing out the hypocrisy, leftists have taken their bait and chosen to use reverse psychology, running with an unpopular “cancel culture is good, actually!” approach, therefore helping to normalize it instead.
Don’t forget “cancel culture doesn’t exist (because so-and-so is still employed),” a completely unwinnable war that the left seems intent on waging anyway (even Stewart unfortunately lapses into it, sort of, in this clip).

I’m not being disingenuous at all. I’ve read that exact claim, nearly word for word, a number of times in articles and comments on this site. Maybe less of late, but it was certainly a popular take for all of last year. It strikes me as a bizarre response to right-wing crazy.

“Canceled” means something different to everyone. Louis CK was the consensus top stand-up in the world, he was respected, he was wearing a suit. His TV show was held up as the best the “auteur-driven semi-autobiographical dramedy” genre could offer. He had crossed over from comedian’s comedian to bona fide member of the entertainment elite.
Sure, he’s making a living by selling specials direct to viewers, but there was a distinct loss of status. A change in his fortunes. He was relegated from the A-List to the “performing for a niche”-List, and I don’t think anyone can argue with a straight face that his life and career before and after are somehow equivalent or the same, or that the “after” is not in every way less than the “before.”

to me cancelation really boils down to whether you have ‘real fans’ or not.aziz ansari effectively got canceled because he was annoying on a date. chance the rapper basically got canceled because he loved his wife too much. people love to call armie hammer a cannibal, but the actual reason he got canceled was simply because he was too horny and people didn’t like that. thomas middleditch, i reckon, got canceled more for being the kind of guy who goes to sex clubs than anything he actually did at the sex clubs (which, to be clear, sounds really bad). john mulaney is a good example of what i’m talking about. his fake fans who liked ‘the idea’ of john mulaney left when they found out he wasn’t the perfect wife guy they imagined, but his real fans stuck around because they paid attention to the fact that he always presented himself as an unhinged addict. some people just don’t have any actual real fans.if you’re beloved enough, you just don’t really get canceled. louis ck effectively sequestered himself so he doesn’t have to actually deal with anything. he’ll never win an oscar, but he’ll never be out of work, either.

He has never been truly canceled because he has hardcore fans. Ironically he got kicked off ABC likely under pressure from the W administration for saying things that the protestors he’s criticizing now would agree with. But he bounced right back to HBO and still sells out good-sized venues for his standup, somehow.

The Dixie Chicks were fully “cancelled” for a period in the 90’s. It was so egregious that we had Senate hearings about it led by John McCain. It was crazy to actually watch it happen.

I would say Gina Carano was cancelled but I would say it with a huge caveat. If you were a guest star tier actor on a popular show whose main star had a huge goodwill following, and spent your free time insulting him and his family, and ignored your employers’ attempts to get you to knock the toxic workplace bullshit off, and while your character’s main appeal was to lesbians and queer people you spent your Internet time insulting them, too, well. At that point, you have not just bit the hand that feeds, you have shat the rug, pissed on the sofa, and destroyed the family photos on the wall. Yes, you are going to be shown the door. If you lack the acting talents to perform any other character believably and you don’t fit in the tiny box the friends you were trying to woo want to stuff all women into, then there will not be another door opening to accept you. So it’s not being cancelled so much as it is facing the consequences for being too stupid to know you’ve got a good thing and too mean to play nice while you have it.

Exactly. They were the “it’s not McCarthyism, it’s consequences culture” side until people they agreed with—most recently, people who criticized Israel—started facing said consequences. There’s an entire middle part of this video where he states that both the left and the right in the internet age are working outrage like a rented mule. I don’t think he has stopped criticizing his own side (and you wouldn’t think that either if you halfway kept up with the show). However, the thrust of this segment was about the right wing media’s favorite villain, Cancel Culture. He’s calling them out for non-stop complaining about a thing that they themselves do. Yes, he performs a little rhetorical sleight-of-hand to get to that point, but he knows full well that outrage from the left also sometimes costs people jobs.
I think the bigger issue is, Trump aside, it only takes a small corner of the internet / social media to go apeshit on somebody and have it look like a societal movement. So it is remarkably easy to find someone looking to “cancel” someone else over whatever perceived slight, often invented for the occasion, they may have committed.Ultimately the objective isn’t really to permanently make someone go away, it’s to be able to claim hypocrisy by the other side and thereby chip away at whatever legitimacy the person in question may have. It’s more of a long game than just trying to shitcan someone once and permanently.

That leads to a plurality of voices (which I think is, overall, a net positive) on every issue, so on any given topic you are going to hear opinions you agree with, ones you don’t, ones that are just too bizarre for you to even process, and so on. And yes, it’s exhausting, as Stewart says. It’s our responsibility to give each voice we hear the weight and context it deserves, which isn’t always easy.

Indeed. It’s like all the “people are so sensitive these days” and variants of such. No, it’s just that everyone can communicate their ideas to the public. If people could do that 50 years ago, you’d have the same thing happening. People haven’t changed as much as the environment has changed. The people who don’t like blackface? They were there in the 50s and 60s and 70s too. They’ve been there all along. They just couldn’t do much about it other than complain to their friends. And, of course, with that comes an enormous amount of talk. Everyone saying what they want, which means you’ll get everything from crazy nut jobs to perfectly rational takes.

Both things can be true. Jerry Seinfeld has been dragged as much or perhaps more than Butker over his Pop-Tarts movie, which is weird, because it was surprisingly fine, just not because of his performance and he is smug and annoying.And it’s also true that Jon Stewart didn’t mention the protests of Seinfeld for his position on Israel, because walking out on a speaker you disagree with isn’t cancel culture. It’s protest and really isn’t part of his thesis here.Now, to Stewart’s discredit, wanting Seinfeld to go away because you don’t like his comedy also isn’t cancel culture, it’s just complaining because he’s really really annoying as an actor and has never been, as an on-screen performer, the highlight of the (diminishing) number of great works he’s been a part of. He could’ve pointed out that the Republicans shouted down their colleagues and tried to suppress their speech, whereas (at least with the Morehouse protestors) they just stood up, turned their backs, and walked out, like normal peaceful protestors do.(As an aside, it’s interesting to keep seeing Butker’s repetition of the ancient, and discredited by the Pope himself, canard that Jews killed Jesus referred to in media like this as “light anti-Semitism.” It is one of the core tenets of institutionalized anti-Semitism and speaking that to college students as something “true” is as disturbing as anything else he said. I was surprised Stewart didn’t bring it up.)
