The Eras Tour successfully takes over at the weekend box office

It's probably a good thing that every other new release tried to avoid Taylor Swift

Well, it’s here: The biggest cinematic event since the last big cinematic event, and now we can see just how much money Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour concert film is going to bring in to theaters. The answer, unsurprisingly, is “lots.” The Eras Tour opened at the top of the domestic charts this weekend with $96 million—more than Oppenheimer but less than Barbie, lots more than Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning Part One, more than Fast X, more than The Flash, and more than The Exorcist: Believer (which famously moved its release date to avoid Taylor Swift).

Speaking of David Gordon Green’s latest horror reboot, last week’s winner made $11 million and fell to second place, giving Believer $44 million total after two weeks. The rest of the top five (hell, the rest of the top 10) is almost identical to last week, and while it’s not a disaster, it’s clear that most people went to the theater this weekend to see Taylor Swift and not much else. That’s what happens when you know that everybody in the next room over is going to be singing and dancing and trading friendship bracelets. It makes the idea of seeing PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie… less appealing. (It made $7 million and has $49 million after three weeks.)

After that top three we have Saw X, The Creator, A Haunting In Venice, The Blind, The Nun II, The Equalizer 3, and Dumb Money, all of which we’ve probably already made sarcastic comments about in previous weeks. (Did you know The Blind is about the guy from Duck Dynasty and that he has some bad opinions about stuff?) There aren’t many other interesting things happening on the charts, but Dicks: The Musical had a very high per-screen average last week after only opening on a few screens, but it did not go wide this week (probably to avoid Taylor Swift) and only made another $94,000.

Here’s the full top 10 again in list form from Box Office Mojo.

  • Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour
  • The Exorcist: Believer
  • PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie
  • Saw X
  • The Creator
  • A Haunting In Venice
  • The Blind
  • The Nun II
  • The Equalizer 3
  • Dumb Money

You wanted to write “swiftly” didn’t you?

Given the length of the Hollywood strikes, I wonder if we’ll have more concert movies in the near future…

Might not make economic sense for the artist. Swift knew there was still a huge part of the fanbase that didn’t see the concert or would pay again while she has re-recorded those albums again to promote. Everyonelse has to worry how much it would eat into concert sales. And audiences have been conditioned to wait for streaming, so that’s now two layers removed from the big money maker.

the only other artist who could pull this off is beyonce and she is doing it next, but that’s the entire inventory.

I think it’s important to note that Eras Tours movie tickets cost nearly double a normal movie ticket, which is going to inflate the box office total, even if less people are seeing it.

Hey! This guy just cracked the code that ticket sales and box office aren’t the same thing when you factor in ticket prices! Somebody tell David O. Selznick that Gone With the Wind is still king of Boffo B.O.! Take that, Spielberg!

      • willoughbystain-av says:

Don’t know if that comment merited snark; the doubled ticket prices are surely a very relevant factor that for some reason has been omitted from most stories. I feel like the smaller increases from 3D and IMAX surcharges are generally noted so why not this? If it were being sold at regular prices it would have grossed around $43million, which still would have been incredible and unprecedented for a concert film, so it’s not really taking anything away from it.

i, for one, didn’t know it was a more expensive ticket and i read all the weekend box office reports. it’s been underreported, at best.

This is a pretty logical move for movie theatres but I don’t like that there will be people now that will claim that music is somehow superior to film or whatever. I like when stuff stays in its own lane.
