The on- and off-screen spectacle that is The Flash released a brand new trailer on Tuesday. Premiering on June 16, the Ezra Miller-led extravaganza cracks open DC’s multiverse and marks the end of the old era (with final appearances for Justice League co-stars Ben Affleck and, probably, Gal Gadot) and the beginning of the new, as the Flashpoint adaptation gives the DCEU a handy reset.

The Flash – Official Trailer 2

Although this is ostensibly a movie about Barry Allen, it’s Michael Keaton’s Bruce Wayne that takes center stage in the new trailer. Unlike Affleck’s Batman, this Bruce seems to approve of Barry breaking the universe in order to save his parents. He’s even willing to help Barry out by putting on the suit and breaking out the old catchphrases. (“You wanna get nuts? Let’s get nuts,” Keaton proclaims with dramatic gravitas.) Also suiting up is Supergirl (Sasha Calle), seen in her suit for the first time, emblazoned with the Zor-El crest that stands for hope. All of these heroes, plus a bonus Flash, will team up to face off with a (slightly confused) Michael Shannon as General Zod.

The Flash has faced some serious challenges to get to this point, even before drama with its lead. A string of directors and writers have been attached and subsequently departed over the years, with the job eventually going to Andy Muschietti and Christina Hodson. Ray Fisher was at one point supposed to co-star as Cyborg before he called out and then parted ways with DC and Warner Bros. Barry’s dad was recast from Billy Crudup to Ron Livingston. The Snyderverse itself crumbled and DC Studios got completely new management over the course of this film’s development and production. And then there’s the Ezra Miller of it all, which is a whole other can of worms.

Nevertheless, DC and WB are putting on a brave face and championing The Flash as the best superhero movie ever, actually. Big boss David Zaslav roped in Tom Cruise to put in a good word, and new man in charge James Gunn has lavished it with praise, calling it an “extraordinary film” in the trailer announcement. Fans will get to decide for themselves if the juice was worth all that squeezing when the film hits theaters in June.

It looks like fun but man, I know the Flashpoint story in and out at this point. Between the comic, the animated film, and the TV series, I can look at the trailer and tell exactly what they’re adapting and where. There’s no surprises. I also think past Barry even becomes the antagonist to keep his mom alive, instead of having Reverse Flash. I’m still going to see it for sure, but it’s not like it’s on my bucket list. Maybe I’m just dead inside, or the Ezra Miller stuff really put me off.

Same. I really wanted to be excited about this movie, especially with Keaton returning as Batman, but this just doesn’t feel very Flashy to me. There just seem to be a bunch of little things that on their own
wouldn’t matter, but add them up and I’m just not feeling it. Maybe it’s just the fatigue of hearing about this movie for nearly 10
years (Miller was cast in 2015, if I recall) that has me indifferent.
Flashpoint was a fun way to reset and blow up the entire DC universe and feature some alternate versions of characters, which the animated film is a great adaptation of, but the TV show already leaned in the whole “Zoom murdered my mommy” story heavily during the first few seasons. Unlike Aquaman who just has that one Thor/Loki-style story about his his brother Orm staging a coup (see Justice League animated series, Batman Brave and the Bold, Aquaman Throne of Atlantis animated movie, and Aquaman the movie) there are so many other Flash stories to tell and great villains to feature (love Michael Shannon but I don’t need more Zod in a Flash movie).
The Infantino Flash suit is one of the most perfect designs in all of comics and this movie has not 1, but 2, super wonky looking Flash suits. The Bat-Flash suit is a fun idea, but it looks bad in application. Meanwhile, the shellmet was the worst look on the CW, I’m not sure why they decided to go in that direction for the movie. It reminds me of the cowl from the awful aborted Justice League pilot from the late 1990s. But also, while I’ve enjoyed Miller’s performance in other movies, and WB has nailed casting a lot of its DC characters over the past 10 years, Miller just doesn’t fit any version of Barry Allen to me (though I could see them as a Wally West or Bart Allen maybe 10 years ago).

i’ll obviously wait and see, but i cannot believe this is a trailer for a movie people are calling ‘one of the best superhero movies ever made’. it looks like madlibs quotes of the original batman movie wrapped around injustice cut scenes to me.

Meh. I’m sure it’ll be on Max, or whatever it’ll be called, at some point.

Man, he actually said the “Let’s get nuts” line. This movie is going to rock.
