The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 gets a grim, gritty full trailer

Film Features Film

After rolling out a propaganda-themed promotional campaign and a teaser trailer about the symbolic power of the Mockingjay, the full length trailer for Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 takes a more Katniss-centered approach. Gone are the days of fun competitions involving teenagers killing themselves; they are replaced instead with a gritty revolution to which Katniss has become an unwitting figurehead.

The trailer reveals that Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) has been captured by the Capitol to be used as a propaganda pawn. Meanwhile, Katniss and her allies are training and planning a political revolution from an underground bunker. Katniss’ childhood friend, Gale (Liam Hemsworth), is chief among her allies, although BeeTee (Jeffrey Wright), Haymitch (Woody Harrelson), Plutarch (Philip Seymour Hoffman), fan favorite Finnick (Sam Claflin), and even a stripped-down Effie (Elizabeth Banks) all make cameos here.

While the creative team hasn’t revealed exactly where the third book will be split, the trailer implies that a major arc of Part 1 will center on Katniss’ attempts to convince revolutionary leader President Coin (Julianne Moore) to rescue Peeta from the clutches of President Snow (Donald Sutherland). Meanwhile Katniss’ visit to a makeshift hospital in District 8 looks to be one of the big action set pieces of the film, which hits theaters November 21.
