If you’re anything like this writer and you used to spend hours staying up to read fan fiction likely written by other lovesick 14-year-olds, wondering why the great powers that be hadn’t tapped Wattpad or Archive Of Our Own for the big screen yet, your childhood dream is about to be realized. Especially if you were at all involved in the world of “bandom” fic and especially if the band you were most interested in happens to rhyme with “schun schmirection.”
Michael Showalter’s latest film, The Idea Of You, is ripped straight out of a Harry Styles fantasy. Red, White & Royal Blue’s Nicholas Galitzine plays Hayes, a member of a fake boy band called August Moon who falls in love with an older woman, Olivia Wilde Solène, played by Anne Hathaway.
In the trailer, we learn that Solène is a gallery owner who meets Hayes at Coachella. Sometime after, he tracks her down and they strike up a real romance, to the delight of tabloid reporters and despair of teenage girls everywhere.
In the grand tradition of fake bands that kind of become real bands somewhere along the way (cough, cough Daisy Jones And The Six), Prime Video also created a fake Instagram page for August Moon complete with classic, weirdly posed boy band snaps of Galitzine and his co-stars Dakota Adan, Viktor White, Jaiden Anthony, and Raymond Cham Jr.. The “band” also shared their first-ever single, an almost perfect One Direction knockoff called “Dance Before We Walk,” that’s sure to “accidentally” find its way onto a Spotify Wrapped or two before the year is out. I read this book and I am disappointed by the creative team behind this movie. This movie either needs to be a Lifetime movie or goofy, unhinged art film ala Boxing Helena.
How does Anne Hathaway keep ending up in movies with these horrible wigs?

She’s 41, which means she’s entered the “withered crone” phase of her Hollywood career.
To be fair it doesn’t say she’s old. It says she’s older than him, which she is.
I’m glad at least they seemed to have reduced the creepiest elements of the book. In the original the Harry expy is 20, which makes their romance and age gap really uncomfortable. It’s so blatantly a self-insert fanfic, and while I understand its success (because middle aged housewives are horny and fantasize about seducing younger men), the fact that nobody seems to clock how creepy it is is disconcerting.Imagine if a middle-aged man wrote a novel where he falls in love with an obvious Olivia Rodrigo stand-in. I’m sure people on the internet would be just as accepting of that as they were of this book.
