It seems like we can’t go longer than 72 hours nowadays without a streaming service announcing a confounding decision to remove popular, original media from their platform. The latest update to send fans into a righteous outrage is Netflix’s decision to remove Jane Campion’s The Power Of The Dogan original film that received a whopping 11 Academy Award nominations (the highest of any film in 2022)—from its UK platform. The last day to watch the film in the UK will be August 18. (No updates have been announced in this regard for Netflix US.)

Despite the very understandable backlash, however, this particular situation might be a little more reasonable than other axings in recent months. (Emphasis on might.) According to the U.K.-based culture magazine Radio Times, Netflix is not actually the sole distributor of the film; it was also co-produced by the BBC.

While nothing has been announced yet, this may mean that the film is getting pulled so it can be re-homed on BBC iPlayer, the broadcasting company’s own streaming service. There is a precedent for a move like this, at least. Last year, the BBC-backed Netflix original His House was also disappeared from the service, only to reappear on iPlayer a few days later.

In the meantime, the only sure way to preserve access to the film (or any film, for that matter) in perpetuity is to buy it on DVD or Blu-Ray—an option that luckily exists for the Benedict Cumberbatch-led Western thanks to The Criterion Collection. But until other streaming services follow the lead set by Paramount+ with its DVD release announcement for cancelled series Grease: Rise Of The Pink Ladies, it may be time to revisit old favorites as many times as it takes to burn them into your brain. Who knows what’s next on the chopping block.

I still buy my Star Wars and Marvel on disc because there could be a day Disney Plus may charge per viewing. Heck I’m happily getting hosed on buying some movies twice, once on digital a month before the disc comes out and then again 30 days later. But have only done that for Guardians of the Galaxy v3 and Across the Spider-Verse Becuase they’re awesome and I don’t want to wait a month for the disc to come out

my friends, we are going to need to start differentiating between the very real issue of media disappearing off all platforms with no physical release or streaming purchase options, and the very benign practice of shuffling content licenses across different platforms and markets.

I remember when this site used to run monthly lists of what was coming and going on each of the major streamers without trying to stir up any outrage. I suppose the difference is that The Power of the Dog was billed as a Netflix original and some people wrongly assumed that meant Netflix would have it in perpetuity, which has never been the case. I doubt most casual viewers give much thought to whether a movie is displayed with a red N or not.(A “Netflix Original” film is one to which Netflix has acquired first distribution rights in a given territory, not necessarily one which they had a hand in producing or have any permanent ownership.)

or, you know, you could get a big hard drive, a peg-leg, and an eye-patch.

Yeah the movie was pulled from Netflix Ireland as well on August 18th since Ireland tends to be lumped in wih Netflix UK , except yeah ..no Iplayer access So basically we’re in limbo here https://www.joe.ie/movies-tv/power-of-the-dog-leaving-netflix-best-original-movies-779341
