The recipe for a dope Friday night: 2 Dope Queens and 1 Keegan-Michael Key

Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Friday, March 1 and Saturday, March 2. All times are Eastern.

Top pick

2 Dope Queens (HBO, Friday, 11 p.m.): We may have bid farewell to the dopest of podcasts last fall, but its queens are here to stay. At least, you can get your fix tonight via the HBO adaptation’s second-season finale. Each one-hour special is packed with more of the organic banter, anecdotal humor, and good-natured social commentary we loved from the podcast. Hosts and best friends Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson’s chemistry is as palpable as ever, our own Danette Chavez noting in her season one review that the show “maintains the same warmth, humor, and relevance, as Robinson and Williams keep on riffing, parsing, and sharing.”

This season’s first three episodes welcomed guests Lupita Nyong’o, Daniel Radcliffe (to the Potterhead hosts’ delight), Janet Mock, and Lizzo. The final installment, appropriately titled “Regal AF,” will show the hosts donning queenly gowns and playing a game of impressions with special guest Keegan-Michael Key. No word yet as to whether the queens will be back for a third season (and it certainly seems like Williams and Robinson plan to pursue other projects), so let’s gear up for a royally dope night and enjoy them while we can.

Wild card

Saturday Night Live (NBC, Saturday, 11:30 p.m.): SNL really is a bit of a wild card these days, with our reviews averaging somewhere in the “C” range. But tonight the widely beloved (except, perhaps, by J.J. Bittenbinder and the cast of Ocean’s 8) John Mulaney makes his grand return to Studio 8H. If his hosting debut last April is any indication, Mulaney’s unwavering charm might be just what the show is missing. A former SNL writer himself known for generating beloved characters like Stefon and messing with Bill Hader, Mulaney has repeatedly been a hit on the show, most recently in a standout surprise Weekend Update appearance with friend Pete Davidson.

Dennis Perkins will be back on Saturday night with his review. In the meantime, here’s a look back at all of the many, many times Mulaney supposedly auditioned to be an SNL cast member.

I got an ICP notification for this?

The Diner Lobster sketch from his first appearance was amazing.  Hopefully we get something odd like that again.

I can’t get enough of 2 Dope Queens and hope HBO extends their engagement for a long time. It’s only 4 episodes. Certainly the talent and HBO can come together for 4 shows a year, no?
