The Sinner’s biggest mystery: How is Carrie Coon so good?

TV Lists What's On Tonight

Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Wednesday, August 29. All times are Eastern.

Top pick

The Sinner (USA, 10 p.m.): In his pre-air review of this season of The Sinner, Alex McLevy had some praise for one of the new additions to the cast: “[Carrie] Coon brings a wonderful fusion of frazzled humanism and sinister duplicity to the part, another magnetic performance by the actor that elevates the material and lends gravitas to some of the more daffily implausible turns.” Tonight, both the magnetic performance and the daffily implausible turns continue, as Ambrose’s (Bill Pullman) encounter with Vera (Coon) extracts a price and a “new suspect” is identified—a pretty intriguing bit of information, given that this season isn’t so much a whodunnit as a whydunnit. Alex will be on hand to de-daffy whatever twists and turns the episode might bring.

One twist you can rule out: Carrie Coon isn’t suddenly going to be bad at her job.

Regular coverage

Castle Rock (Hulu)

Wild card

Alone Together (Freeform, 8 p.m.): Esther Povitsky and Benji Aflalo’s awkward-selfish-millennial comedy ends its second season in fine (awkward, selfish) form with back-to-back episodes and a few interesting guest stars: Danny Pudi, Abby Elliot, Sean Clements, and Carmen Electra. Worth a look, if you haven’t had the pleasure—and if you want to start at the beginning with Esther’s pesto-covered retainer, you can find both seasons in full on Hulu.
