Fallout, a game series in which players navigate an irradiated, retro-futuristic wasteland, is being adapted as a series for Amazon, whose Jeff Bezos is absolutely the kind of dude who would blow up Megaton.

Leading the charge into Raider territory are Westworld creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, who are gonna make this thing way more complex than it needs to be, aren’t they? Fallout games are, by and large, light on plot and heavy on exploration, with many of the random side quests serving as the most compelling parts of each game. And while we’re keeping an open mind, fingers are crossed that the pair has yet to discover Fallout 4's The Institute—if so, it’s Westworld all over again.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project comes with a series commitment penalty attached, meaning that if Bezos’ cronies like the scripts they’ll allow the show to bypass the pilot stage and go right to series. If not, they’ll be paid out as if it had. Joy and Nolan will produce the series via their Kilter Films banner alongside Todd Howard and James Altman of Bethesda Game Studios and Bethesda Softworks, the game’s publishers.

Fallout is one of the greatest game series of all time,” Joy and Nolan said in a joint statement. “Each chapter of this insanely imaginative story has cost us countless hours we could have spent with family and friends. So we’re incredibly excited to partner with Todd Howard and the rest of the brilliant lunatics at Bethesda to bring this massive, subversive, and darkly funny universe to life with Amazon Studios.”

Fallout is, along with William Gibson’s The Peripheral, among the projects Nolan and Joy are developing as part of their overall deal with Amazon. It’s also the latest game adaptation to be announced in a field that’s becoming crowded with them: The Last Of Us, Halo, Borderlands, and even Final Fantasy are in the process of being developed. Netflix’s The Witcher adaptation, meanwhile, has been renewed for a second season.

I wonder how they’ll include the microtransactions?

I wonder how many times I’ll ready this dumb joke when microtransactions are only barely attached to one Fallout game and only for unnecessary cosmetics.

    • frankwalkerbarr-av says:

Is this a Fallout ‘76 reference? Because they weren’t any in the normal numbered (1-4) Fallout games.

      • mfdixon-av says:

Correct.Fallout 76 is not and will never be considered part of the mainline series.

        • teageegeepea-av says:

As far as I’m concerned, only the original Fallout counts. I guess you could also play Wasteland, but it’s not Fallout.

It will be like one of those “choose what happens next” things on Netflix. The option that leads to a non-canon ending will always be free. The option that leads to one canon ending will cost a few bottle caps. You can pay a few bottle caps to undo a choice you’ve made to backtrack one step. It will cost bottle caps to start over since only the first viewing of the episode is free. You get bottle caps based on how much you buy on Amazon.

      • igotlickfootagain-av says:

And everyone has to pay. If John Smith from Arkansas hasn’t shelled out his bottlecaps, a message goes out to all the other viewers letting them know exactly who’s holding up the show.

    • igotlickfootagain-av says:

If anyone can figure out how to do it, it’s Bezos.

I can’t wait for that canvas bag and rum.

Possible episode titles:Concealed Gary PermitGary, Indiana (note: will need a character named Indiana)When Gary Met Sally (note: will need a character…never mind.)There’s Something About Gary

Borderlands has CATE BLANCHETT somehow, but I wonder how they will replicate the joy of sitting there bored while your buddy spends three straight hours comparing weapon stats in the store only to stick with what he had going in.

Just send a camera crew in a few weeks to Texas and probably be close to the same thing

  • el-zilcho1981-av says:

Is it going to be a comedy? Because the heart of Fallout is comedy.

  • blpppt-av says:

Here’s hoping we get “S1 Westworld” Fallout and not the last 2 seasons.Maybe thats why the quality has suffered of late? Maybe Joy and Nolan were (mostly) working on this show?

    • ac130-av says:

I think Westworld just wrote itself into a corner. I thought S3 was gonna be a lot of fun with it branching out into the real world, but it simply collapsed under it’s own complexities (that really aren’t all that complex)

I did like the episode where Caleb was drugged because it was at least something fun and new. The best episodes of that show are the ones that deviate completely from the rest of the series, like Kiksuya. I’m just hoping they stick with the atom-age/mid century modern/art deco stylings of the games.

      • blpppt-av says:

I wish they would…you know…go back to um, WESTWORLD.;)

      • refinedbean-av says:

Honestly, if S3 had just one ep that really explored the theme of “the humans are in cycles just like the robots” then I think all of Dolores’ shit would resonate more. As it was, when she did her thing, I was just like “Oh! Gosh. Okay. So…so yeah.”

    • mikolesquiz-av says:

I really hope we don’t get any kind of Westworld Fallout. I can’t think of anyone apparently less suited to making a Fallout show – like, the RuPaul’s Drag Race lot would seem more appropriate – but I’m hopin’ & prayin’ that these two actually have a whole other side to them we’ve never seen before.

The best post-apocalyptic boy, even though he seemed hell bent on setting off every mine and tripwire in the wasteland.

    • olftze-av says:

He better be cute, and he better tear a ghoul’s throat out.At the same time.

    • modusoperandi0-av says:

In my first playthrough, maybe fifteen minutes after I got him, I told Dogmeat to get me ammo and he ran off and never came back.I was inconsolable.

  • murrychang-av says:

So am I going to have to download a new version of Mod Manager to mod in the good shit?Alternately: My favorite way to play FO4 was sneaking around in full Power Armor with a fully modded explosive ammo pistol and exploding heads in VATS. That would make a hell of a TV show.No but seriously, if it’s like the sidequests of FO4 or set in the west like the good Fallouts I’ll watch the heck out of it.  If it’s something like the main quest of FO4 or what WestWorld seems to have turned into, hard pass.

  • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

couldn’t be a less interesting creative team for this project. the only way to make this anything is to lean into the more cynical satire and goofy stuff, but i’m gonna call it now and say it’s just gonna be sad, drab and the first season will end with the ‘twist’ that they’ve found another vault.

  • farsight-av says:

People bemoaning Westworld really need to check out Person of Interest. It’s the series the Nolans should be known for, and it’s the reason I am jazzed for their take on Fallout.

  • compsci-365-av says:

Leaked spoilers say that Season 2 is just a rerun of season 1 because the game accidentally glitched out their save data.

  • sgt-makak-av says:

  • returning-the-screw-av says:

Overcrowded? Good. All those things need to be series and not movies. I hate when people use that word for shit. They aren’t even connected except they are all video games. If they weren’t you’d just think they were diverse stories and normal television shows. I don’t ever see anybody complain there’s too many cop or doctor or lawyer shows.

  • jeffreywinger-av says:

can’t wait for the plot twist where it turns out the post apoc stuff is all a dream of a person in the back of a cart after getting arrested trying to cross the border…

  • igotlickfootagain-av says:

I wonder if the decision to make this series was based on Bezos saying, “Hmm, we sure shipped a tonne of units of this ‘Fallout’ game. Make it a TV show and then dump the profits on my money tower.”
