The Tick is here to save the Friday

TV Lists What's On Tonight

Here’s what’s up in the world of TV for Friday, August 25 and Saturday, August 26. All times are Eastern.

Top pick

The Tick (Amazon, Friday): Yes, there’s supervillains and a talking boat, but the return of everyone’s favorite blue-hued bug-derived hero is a straightforwardly silly endeavor, no irony needed. In our advance review, William Hughes says that, “Increased interest in the inner lives of its characters is the real meat of this new series, even as it provides all the nonsensical one-liners, giant naked men, and superhero parodies that fans of these characters have come to expect.” John Hugar will pen heroic reviews every other day, but the entire season drops now.

Regular coverage

Halt And Catch Fire (AMC, Saturday, 9 p.m.)

Wild card

Death Note (Netflix): Yeah, our film critic Ignatiy Vishnevetsky said it was confused and inane, but he also calls this adaptation of a bonkers cult manga and anime series—about a kid with a book that gets anyone who’s name is written in it killed—“perversely watchable.” That’s our cue!
