The Toy Story 4 trailer is rife with Easter eggs from Coco, Cars, Inside Out, and more

Aux Features Pixar

10 days ago, Disney unleashed the first full-length trailer for the upcoming Toy Story 4, and it seemed to capture that old Pixar magic, combining sentiment, smarts, and darkness in equal measure. As it turns out, maybe the reason it conjured that nostalgic glow is because it is chock full of Pixar Easter eggs.

Youtuber Jace Diehl has assembled a detailed breakdown of every single reference, character, and moment of imagery from Pixar past to be found in the new film’s trailer, and it’s actually a fairly satisfying rundown for fans of the animation studio. There’s the guitar from Coco, Merida’s clan crest from Brave, the unicorn from Inside Out, and Boo from Monsters, Inc., to name a few. There are some deep cuts, too, like a delivery truck from the TV special Toy Story Of Terror. But the nerdiest of Easter eggs has got to be the inclusion of an old Star Wars action figure—presumably added simply because Pixar animators, like the rest of us, are just a bunch of dorks.

Toy Story 4 goes from infinity to theaters on June 21, but you can play armchair detective with the trailer and previous Pixar films at any time.

I think I found the Cars reference: if you look in the back right-hand corner of the lawn at 0:47, you can see a dog turd.

Good sir, I think you mean Cars 2.

Yeah honestly the first Cars isn’t bad. It’s forgettable but still charming and funny. Now Cars 2, hoo boy, that’s the day I knew Pixar wasn’t infallible.

I would say Cars 3 is in the same territory as the first. Forgettable but still charming, as you put it. If anything, it’s very much written as a love letter to Paul Newman, so I appreciate it in that respect. The criticism towards the franchise as a whole isn’t really that warranted. If it was made by any other studio, no one would make such a big deal.

Are there toy Lightning McQueens in the Toy Story universe? If so, do they all sound like Owen Wilson?

  • gloopers-av says:

if all of these elements are saved on a database and can be cut and pasted into any of these scenes, how impressive are all of these easter eggs?

Also, you can catch a brief glimpse of new character “Grabby,” the hairless teddy bear with a taste for terrible Hawaiian shirts who follows Bo Peep a little too closely until his fellow toy handlers put him on toy leave.

is Michael Keaton back as Ken? because if not, I’m not interested

  • praxinoscope-av says:

By easter eggs you mean an orgy of brand self-promotion?

  • halfbreedjew-av says:

Is is weirding anyone else that Bo Peep looks so different? Obviously they’re within their rights to redesign, but none of the other toys looks too different. How does a plastic toy change its look, anyway?(I’m aware of the controversy over Andy but it seems natural to me that a human character would look different given 24 years of advancement in CGI. The other toys meanwhile look the same.)
