Welcome back to another episode of Film Club. Today, our critics A.A. Dowd and Katie Rife sit down to discuss Sonic The Hedgehog, Paramount’s completely unnecessary adaptation of the beloved 90s video game character. Sure, the redesigned visual effects are less horrifying, but they can’t save this movie from being a total slog.

Every time I see that preview image with Sonic holding the rubber band balls, I have to do a double-take because it looks like he has breasts in a colorful bikini top.

I just really need to point out that you could’ve said “Sonic the Hedge-SLOG” but now that I’ve typed it out it’s probably better that u didn’t.

I appreciate that they’re pretending that Sonic hasn’t had a game since the ‘90s. I want to live in that world.

Which is funny, seeing how Sonic is currently kicking the sh*t out of BoP at the box office, oh I’m sorry I meant Harley Quinn: BoP, a film you absolutely adored.

B – is absolutely adored? I thought that was more on the level of “Yeah, it’s okay.”

Given the sheer number of articles this site and associated web rings have devoted to the movie, they either adored it or are on the advertising payroll a la Harry Knowles. I’m trying to be less cynical here and just chalking it up poor taste in movies.

You know, apart from Newswire stories (that report factual things like the film’s title being altered and release dates and so on), the only pieces I could find for ‘Birds of Prey’ here were a film review, a Film Club video (both of which ‘Sonic’ got), and one For Our Consideration article about the film’s relationship to queerness. I’m still not seeing this lovefest you seem to insist is there.

You seen weirdly threatened by a fun comic book movie, friend.

      • Cash907-av says:

Not at all, just musing on the apparent chasmic disconnect between the film snobs on this webring and pretty much everyone else.

  • igotlickfootagain-av says:

This was one of the most fun Film Club videos I’ve seen in a while. Sorry you had to watch ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ for it, but that was a blast to watch.

I think this movie could have an amazing Rifftrax. For what its worth my kids loved this movie.  What’s a cliche for me was fresh and new to them.
