There are 3 captions that work with every New Yorker cartoon

Everybody enjoys a good New Yorker cartoon—unless it has one of those esoteric captions you just don’t get.

Until recently, for those instances, you could try to replace the caption with one of these two universal captions—“Christ, what an asshole!” (suggested by blogger Charles Lavoie in 2006) or “What a misunderstanding!” (suggested by artist Cory Arcangel sometime later)—and suddenly the cartoon would make perfect sense.

Designer Frank Chimero offers a new solution: Add LinkedIn’s auto-generated message for new contacts, “I’d like to add you to my professional network on LinkedIn.” It’s surprising how well it works. Here are a few examples from Chimero.
