Let’s dispense with a lengthy preamble and get right to it because this rules far more than it has any right to rule:

Are you not bopping along merrily in your seat? Do you miss Brittany Murphy? Are you suddenly in the mood to board a jukebox-themed space station? Have you already pulled the Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind trailer on YouTube? Might we save you the typing?

We have but one bone to pick with William Maranci, the mashup whiz behind this gem (and this one, an unholy MGMT/Earth, Wind & Fire hybrid which we wrote about an extremely long time ago last March), and it’s this: There really is no Mekhi Phifer. That headline up there began as a punchy little placeholder while we worked out a better joke about mom’s spaghetti, but lo, there is, in fact, no Mekhi Phifer! To make Eminem’s verses fit the structure of ELO’s epic “Mr. Blue Sky,” Maranci had to cut some things and shuffle or repeat others, and that’s to be expected—but did he have to cut the Mekhi Phifer line?

Still, great job, William Maranci of YouTube fame. If you only had one shot, one opportunity to mash up a great ELO tune and an Oscar-winning song that was inexplicably performed at the Oscars many years later, you did not let it slip.

I’m not sure how anyone could have come up with this (1:30 mark). Oh that’s right, different song, but yup works with rap.

This is a good one, but the best of all time is still the Britney Spears/Eminem mashup Oops Slim Shady Did It Again:And boy those lyrics have not aged well.

I still play this one out and it kills every time. I believe this was the very first mashup I ever downloaded in …shit 1999.

there is, in fact, no Mekhi Phifer!

This was indicated before 8 Mile was ever released; in fact, Mathers even explicitly stated that most of the plotline was bullshit, and he just wanted to do a movie or something. Same thing with the paintball scene; that was really just shit some of his co-workers did, but he made it “his” story to sell his bullshit.I dunno about anyone else, but while I still somewhat regard him as an excellent lyricist / songwriter, I’m starting to feel like his musical abilities are overstated and that he’s more a hype-man now than an honest-to-God rapper.

What exactly are you mad about? Was there some disclaimer in the movie that said the movie was 100% accurate to Eminem’s life that I missed? It’s a movie.. Did you think you were watching a documentary?
As for his rap abilities. I think they speak for themself.. even at age 48

I just think he presents himself as some sort of hardcore rapper, when he’s really just a mediocre white guy that happens to write lyrics. For example: a line from his joint with Logic, “Homocide:” I don’t want to fuckin’ listen to you spit your rap someone else wrote Came out the same time as his effort with Big Sean, “No Favors.” Guess who literally wrote all of Mathers’ rhymes for that one? Sure as Hell wasn’t Eminem.

That’s one song.. I have no idea why it’s a big deal to you. If i’m a rapper and someone pays me to do a guest spot on the album, I really don’t think it matters if I wrote it or not. Most rap (hell most music and even movies) are a collaberation. To each their own tho. If you don’t like em, that’s all you. Check out NF tho.

The mashup just doesn’t work without Gene Kelly and Cyd Charrise Tripping The Light Fantastic.

  • sweethomealjazeera-av says:

That is a pretty crappy mash-up, for real. Tryin’ just a little too hard there, bud.

  • south-of-heaven-av says:

Okay, now get Baby Groot dancing to it.
