This Smiths and Tears For Fears mashup is a perfect angst vortex

Aux Features Music

The Smiths and Tears For Fears need no help in the moodiness department, but a new mashup featuring the two groups creates an angst vortex that’s delightfully downtrodden. BRAT Productions (a.k.a. musician Daniel Barassi) had the bright idea to speed up Curt Smith’s a cappella vocal track from TFF’s hit “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” and combine it with the instrumental track from the Smiths’ “Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before.” The resulting hybrid somehow amplifies the latter’s minor-key moroseness, while adding a heretofore-absent uneasy edge to Smith’s voice. For the record, BRAT Productions is also responsible for a recently reconstituted viral mashup hit, which layers Robert Smith’s yelps from the Cure’s “Just Like Heaven” over the slow-jamming music from the Commodores’ “Easy.” Listen to these mashups (and an additional remix of “Stop Me”) below. Donnie Darko would approve.
