This supercut ponders the improbably long hair of action movie heroines

How do they do it? How do the heroines of action movies do all that leaping, running, kicking, karate chopping, and occasional decapitating while maintaining those luxuriously long locks of theirs without the use of the humble yet useful scrunchie? This is an issue which may not have occurred to the men watching these movies or even to the men directing them. But it did occur to Slate’s April Son, who presents this fast-paced supercut of remarkably active ladies with magnificent manes, including Uma Thurman, Angelina Jolie, Chloë Grace Moretz, Uma Thurman, Jennifer Garner, Milla Jovovich, Uma Thurman, Scarlett Johansson, and Lucy Liu. The montage, set (obviously) to Willow Smith’s “Whip My Hair,” is entitled “Why No Scrunchie?” And though April Son may have meant this inquiry in earnest, the clips on display provide the answer over and over again. Like wet streets at night or smoke curling up from a freshly-lit cigarette, flying hair simply photographs well and makes a simple but potent visual effect. Those seeking an antidote to such follicle fabulism, meanwhile, can find it in movies like G.I. Jane and V For Vendetta.
