Ti West is out for blood yet again in conclusion to X and Pearl trilogy: MaXXXine

Today, the word “franchise” immediately conjures images of green lawyers, VFX battles, and spider-men of all shapes and sizes. But in the eighties, thanks to juggernauts like Halloween and Friday The 13th, the word meant something a little less super and a little more slasher. Remember that? Director Ti West certainly does, and he appears to be on a one-man mission to bring back all that good old shlock and awe.

West essentially conjured a franchise out of thin air this year with March’s excellent sexed-up slasher, X, and its follow-up, Pearl, premiering September 16. And now—before Pearl has even hit theaters—the bloodthirsty auteur has announced his third entry into the XCU (X Cinematic Universe): MaXXXine, which will serve as the trilogy’s conclusion.

A teaser for MaXXXine played immediately after Pearl’s premiere at TIFF last night, titillating viewers and fans almost as much as the film itself. The clip is delightfully vague; in a sweeping, grainy shot set to Animotion’s “Obsession,” the camera pans to reveal the name of the film, styled as the letters of the Hollywood sign. A note at the bottom reveals that we’re in “Los Angeles, 1985.”

In MaXXXine, Mia Goth will reprise the role of Maxine Minx, aspiring starlet and sole survivor of X’s fateful porn shoot. (Goth also plays her own nemesis, the elderly and murderous farm-keeper Pearl, in X, as well as her younger version in Pearl) The film has not yet been shot yet, but is on a “fast track” by A24, according to Deadline.

All anyone seems to want in this franchise is the be “a fucking star.” Will Maxine finally get her wish or will she be thrown to the metaphorical alligators of the film industry? Something tells us it won’t be all glitz and glamor for the fictional ingénue, but in real life, we’d risk a pitchfork stabbing or two for yet another chance to watch Mia Goth shine.

A Greg Abbott ad on top of a Beto ad on an article about a slasher movie about the porn industry? Weird.

  • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

MaXXXine, which will serve as the trilogy’s conclusion
until the inevitable prequel, sequel to the sequel, reboots and gritty reimagining’s.

  • usernameorwhatever-av says:

This movie has to end with a third, younger Mia Goth character murdering Maxine, right?I hope that character ends up being Goth playing herself.

  • cosmicghostrider-av says:

Well fuck I thought this was just a regular announcement. It’s a teaser at the end of Pearl???! I’m planning on seeing Pearl. Well thanks for robbing me the excitement of learning this information in the theatres.

    Fuck you A.V. Club.

    • ablakeslee-av says:

You clicked on an article, you goddamn goon.

      • boblaboblalalabob-av says:

why would anyone expect spoilers from something not even out yet? if your suggestion to not read anything online.  Thanks you goddamm good

    • mosquitocontrol-av says:

Stop commenting. Also, the studio put it on YouTube. Clearly they don’t think the existence of a third movie is a spoiler I swear, it’s like a child..

    • gargsy-av says:

Oh hey, stupid. DIRECTLY before the link to the trailer is the line “A teaser for MaXXXine played immediately after Pearl’s premiere at TIFF last night”. If you’re too stupid to read the article before clicking on the link, you fucking DESERVE to be disappointed. In fact, you’re so bloody fucking stupid that you deserve to be unhappy for the rest of your life.Fuck you.

  • cosmicghostrider-av says:

but seriously you guys get paid to spoil shit for people. I hope you sleep well at night.

  • jeredmayer-av says:

I absolutely hated X and don’t think it deserves the heaps of praise it got, but I’ll be watching Pearl and this one, and I’m glad Mia Goth is getting accolades, because she was definitely the highlight.

  • cosmicghostrider-av says:

Seriously tho this is really uncool the films not even out yet, basically no one would click on this article unless they were invested in X (great film) and therefore planning to see Pearl. Clearly the director intended a specific vibe by attaching this teaser to the credits and you thought “nah lets spoil this and call it news” like seriously on behalf of myself and Ti West (whose surprise you spoiled cuz you had to be the first to know) I seriously say go fuck yourself Emma Keates.

    • gargsy-av says:

“Clearly the director intended a specific vibe by attaching this teaser to the credits and you thought “nah lets spoil this and call it news””

Ti West revealed the trailer HIMSELF yesterday, AND the distributor of X and Pearl released it.It’s called PROMOTION, stupid.

    • f-garyinthegrays-av says:

LOL. This MFer right here is losing his goddamn mind over spoilers he could have easily avoided by not reading this article.Post more, dude. If you throw enough of a bitch fit in the comments I’m sure they will add a spoiler alert, which will help you not at all.

    • captainbubb-av says:

“Clearly the director intended a specific vibe by attaching this teaser to the credits”Or, crazy idea, it just makes logical sense to advertise the third movie at the end of the second, since people watching the sequel are probably interested in the trilogy.

  • cosmicghostrider-av says:

Like I actually texted the friend who I saw X with when I saw the headline and then I read further and realized it was a spoiler and my friend actually got mad at me. Like that’s on me but fucking come on guys….

  • cosmicghostrider-av says:

This is a new level of shittyness for the A.V. Club just straight up reporting spoilers before a films premiere date without spoiler warning. Thanks for being the neighbourhood asshole.

    • cosmicghostrider-av says:

to be clear this is a spoiler since they obviously made this teaser and didn’t announce it meaning the intention was for people to learn about it while in the theatre. It’s nice to know that we just can’t have surprises anymore. Thanks for ruining my fun guys. I hope you enjoy that paycheque you got for shitting in my mouth.

      • maymar-av says:

A24 publically released it, and made no attempt to hide it. Maybe it was meant to be a surprise at the TIFF screening, but not past that.

        • dan463-av says:

Agreed. It was said when X was released that this was a planned trilogy. It was also “spoiled” when X came out that you should stay through the credit for the Pearl teaser. Most folks don’t stay to the end of the credits for all kinds of movies so legit just a name reveal for the final film isn’t really a spoiler as it doesn’t reveal anything about Pearl’s plot (spoiler she lives and grows up to murder pretty people).

        • radarskiy-av says:

To the Spoiler Justice Warriors “and” and “the” are spoilers.

      • gargsy-av says:

To be clear, this is NOT a spoiler. A24 released the teaser, which means they want people seeing the teaser BEFORE they see Pearl, or they would’ve released it AFTER they released Pearl, right? Also, there are no spoilers for Pearl in the article and there are no spoilers for Pearl in the teaser.Oh, AND Ti West said BEFORE X was released that it was the first movie of a hopeful trilogy.
Take your fake outrage, wrap it in a length of barbed wire and SHOVE IT straight up your sad ass.

      • captainbubb-av says:

Who didn’t announce it? The teaser was posted on the social media accounts for A24 and X/Pearl eight hours ago. Which is probably where the writers here saw it, if not other media outlets reporting it.Did you think the AV Club got some exclusive scoop or something?! Those days are long gone, and they don’t even have anyone covering TIFF.

      • sethsez-av says:

Yeah so I hate spoilers as much as anyone but A24 publicly released the teaser, on YouTube and all over their social media. This isn’t a fucking cam from someone in the audience at TIFF, and the teaser was just meant to be the initial announcement at TIFF, not a surprise for every audience member from then on.
If you’re going to write six posts of increasing hysteria over the course of almost 20 minutes, you can at least make sure the thing you’re bitching about is actually the thing you’re bitching about.

      • minimummaus-av says:

Holy hell, spoilers aren’t the end of the world. There’s all the talk about how this world is getting shittier but the one thing they leave out are people losing their crap over spoilers. We live in a society where click on a video on a streaming site (I’ve seen it on YouTube and Crunchyroll) and read the comments before watching the video and shit a brick if there are people discussing the contents of said video because “spoilers”. If that’s the worst thing happening to you right now then you are so damned fortunate in life.

    • charliebrownii-av says:

      You read the articles?

    • ghboyette-av says:

I honestly can’t tell if you’re doing a bit. That’s like 6 posts about this. It’s a trailer. They released it. Blame A24.

    • colonel9000-av says:

Now THIS is how you attract attention to a comments section and feed the algorithm.  Cosmicghostrider, I can only assume you are Ti West or his mom, and god bless you.

    • badkuchikopi-av says:

The merit of your argument aside, you posted five comments about it like you were blogging your disappointment. It is weird as fuck.also This is a new level of shittyness for the A.V. Club Objectively false.

    • humantully-av says:

6 brand new comments and however many replies to complain about a movie marketing, please log off.

  • mifrochi-av says:

I’m delighted that when these movies are lined up, they will make the phrase “Pearl X MaXXXine,” which is also a capsule summary of the movie X.

  • cinecraf-av says:

Good thing Shia LeBeauf is a changed man, or else he might be getting jealous right now.

  • joeyjojoshabadoox-av says:

These are the lamest complaints for a trailer that really tells you nothing about the movie, other than it takes place in 1985. To make it even more pathetic (and expected), you losers add some gender/race hate for a movie that hasn’t even come out yet. Don’tcha love internet trolling?

  • kleptrep-av says:

Hopefully he actually commits to the fucking slasher motif this time and doesn’t have one of the main bad guys shoot people. Hopefully he also makes the deaths fit the characters and not like in that piece of shit X film wherein they have a Vietnam War Veteran get shot like a little bitch. With both X and House Of The Devil Ti West may be the most overrated director of all time. Twice he’s laid a goose egg at my door and twice you’ve told me that this goose egg is a trust fund worth millions.

    • badkuchikopi-av says:

not like in that piece of shit X film wherein they have a Vietnam War Veteran get shot like a little bitch. What an odd complaint. You know people got shot during Vietnam, right? He didn’t suspect the old man. anyone, regardless of how badass could have made that mistake.

      • kleptrep-av says:

My complaint was that they built this guy up to be a badass only for him to get shot in a few seconds in a slasher film. My main flaw is that he promised me a slasher film and a third of the deaths were gunshots so he can’t even do a slasher film correctly, I’m pretty sure that over half of the deaths weren’t even slashing deaths like he gave up a tenth of the way through the horror film aspect of it all. Dude’s not even that good.
