Timothy Olyphant might be some kind of android in Noah Hawley’s Alien show

The Alien show takes place on Earth, before the first movie

It’s been years since we first heard about the Alien TV show that Fargo’s Noah Hawley was working on for FX, and details about the project have been harder to find than a trustworthy Weyland-Yutani employee since then. Until now! Some vague details about the Alien show have now burst forth from our collective chest—like some kind of nebulous, ill-defined, out-of-focus Xenomorph baby.

Deadline is reporting that Timothy Olyphant has joined the cast in a “major role,” and while Hawley and FX won’t say anything about the show, Deadline’s sources say he’s a “synth” named Kirsh who “acts as a mentor and trainer” for star Sydney Chandler’s character. Speaking of, that character is apparently a “hybrid, meta-human who has the brain and consciousness of a child but the body of an adult.” That sounds weird, but there’s been weirder stuff in the Alien franchise. We can’t think of a ton of examples, because even the botched Ripley clones in Resurrection are a little less weird than that, but there’s definitely something.

The show reportedly takes place “roughly 70 years in the future” on Earth, before the events of Ridley Scott’s original Alien, which would put it in an odd, confusing place in the Alien canon that is more or less contemporary with Prometheus. But they… kind of find proto-Xenomorphs in that movie (even if old Peter Weyland suspects that there’s fantastical stuff out in the universe), which would make it hard for Xenomorphs to show up in any capacity, which would be weird for an Alien show. Luckily, all of that just represents a challenge, not an impossibility, so it could work if Hawley knows what he’s doing. At least it’ll be nice to see Timothy Olyphant full of the disgusting milk blood that androids have.

Aw, this poor fucker can’t catch a break.

Maybe they can hire him to write a script which they then won’t use.

Got me thinking, does this make Johnny Mnemonic the most successful Gibson adaptation? My vote is “Yes”.Either that, or the X-Files episode where he nearly bankrupted them. Or the other one, with all the porn stars.

While I’m not optimistic about this, it could actually be good. Just as The Sarah Connor Chronicles was probably the third best thing in the Terminator franchise after the first two films, it’s possible that a Aliens show could be likewise.

Honestly just the fact that it’s Noah Hawley making this show should soothe your fears. The dude just knows how to make seriously compelling, entertaining TV shows.

Never actually saw Hitman, so I don’t know what his deal was there, but it seems similar. Only older, and a mentor now.

I think Olyphant should play some kind of country lawman in a cowboy hat. He could be very brave and heroic, with a wry sense of humor, but also a worrisome temper.I’m kind of surprised no one’s cast him in something like that, to be honest.

This comment could only be moderately funny if he had played a Raylan/Bullock-like character several times, not…just those 2 times out of dozens and dozens of roles.

I’ve been catching up on the previous season of Fargo (which for some reason I just completely missed when it was first on) and I about shit a brick when he showed up as a cowboy hat wearing US Marshal. The guy may be typecast, but God damn he’s amazing in that role.

      • planehugger1-av says:

Deadwood and Justified are two of my favorite shows, so I certainly have no complaints about Olyphant frequently playing similar roles.  And if you’re gonna be typecast, being defined as a Handsome Cowboy type seems like it’s not too objectionable.

I just finished that season of Fargo too. Olyphant was great – he can play a US Marshall any time he wants. And he was a Mormon US Marshall, so there’s that.[And – I heard some not-great things about season 4 but I really liked it.]

        • deeeeznutz-av says:

And he was a Mormon US Marshall, so there’s that.

          I know…dude’s got impressive range!
I’m only 5 episodes in but I’m loving it so far. I also heard that it was the worst season yet (which based on how good the others are, isn’t really that big of an insult) but I have no complaints about it. All the actors seem to be nailing their parts and the story is developing nicely. I guess there’s always the chance they could totally fumble the back half of the story but in Hawley I trust (the previous seasons and Legion are some of my favorite TV shows of the last decade).

          • coatituesday-av says:

Yeah, I don’t think anything went wrong with the season. I guess it might be the weakest one, but jeez, put against the rest of them that means it’s only great…Really looking forward to this new one.  Juno Temple is incredible.

    • zirconblue-av says:

He already played that character in The Mandalorian.

    Olyphant, Hawley, Alien…
    Sold.

Just reading this brief accounting of the possible timeline is exhausting. I think any speculation about this show boils down to one sentence:This thing will rise or fall by how much leeway Fox gives Hawley.

  • coolgameguy-av says:

that character is apparently a “hybrid, meta-human who has the brain and consciousness of a child but the body of an adult.”*Holds down Hudson’s hand, then traces it with a marker to make a hand turkey*

Seriously. lol  This description is going to come back and bite them in the butt when she has her inevitable sex scene with her child-brain.  Yuck.

      • thundercatsridesagain-av says:

I read that line and thought, “Oh, so they’re just going 100% all-in on the ‘woman as sexy baby’ trope, aren’t they?”

  • SquidEatinDough-av says:

    Tim is a goddamn robot!

  • mid-boss-av says:

I’m interested because Hawley and Olyphant. That description of the show makes me wonder why this is even an Alien show though.

  • respondinglate-av says:

Is that a veiled “Some Kinda Robot” Strongbad emails reference? If so, nice! If not, it should be.

  • Frankenchokey-av says:

I firmly believe some franchises just need to be left behind. Alien, Predator, Terminator, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, The Beatles chief among them.

    • kman3k-av says:

I’ll concede Predator and Terminator (even though Terminator seems to be more prescient these days).More Alien could be good.HP and LOTR have had barely anything other than the original books/movies and have yet to be driven fully into the ground (although Rings of Power tried w/ LOTR). Give them time. And the Beatles?….I’ll fight you.lol

    • jomonta2-av says:

I think Alien and Predator still have promise and more to explore (see ‘Prey’) but it’s the execution that is usually lacking.

    • gargsy-av says:

      “Predator”

      Prey was f*cking great.
