As Shazam! Fury Of The Gods bows in theaters to a somewhat muted reception, there are already eyes on the next DC movie on the docket. According to The Hollywood Reporter, none other than Tom Cruise is already a fan of The Flash, which isn’t due out for another three months.

Several sources told THR that Cruise met with Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav back in February. The exec hyped up the scarlet speedster’s upcoming solo outing, presumably to distract from all those films and TV shows that are no longer being made thanks to his leadership. It worked well enough that the Top Gun: Maverick star asked to see the comic book adaptation, and a completed copy of the movie was sent to Cruise’s home for a private screening. (The picture has already been finished for several months.)

Cruise apparently enjoyed The Flash so much that he called up director Andy Muschietti to offer up his personal compliments. Per THR, his descriptions were along the lines of “everything you want in a movie” and “this is the kind of movie we need now.” It’s no “Big Movie. Big Screen. Loved it,” but it sounds like pretty high praise from Cruise, albeit without baked goods being involved.

Between the varying confidence in DC adaptations and star Ezra Miller’s misconduct allegations and legal troubles, The Flash was already fighting quite the uphill battle even without factoring in movie attendance being impacted by the pandemic. Still, nothing has deterred Zaslav from betting on the flick, though only time will tell if a Super Bowl ad and an endorsement from the A-list theatrical champion will translate to ticket sales.

The Flash also features the returns of Michael Keaton as Batman, Ben Affleck as another Batman, and Michael Shannon as General Zod. Sasha Calle will be making her debut as Supergirl.

The Flash arrives in theaters on June 16.

It’s Michael Shannon, isn’t it? He’s the scientologist.

  • anarwen-av says:

It’s probably because of all the running.

  • robgrizzly-av says:

-Cruise loved it, though he did have notes about how The Flash should run.

“Ezra Miller’ll take you right into the Danger Zone!” – Tom Cruise

  • stevennorwood-av says:

“Along the lines of…”? C’mon, if you don’t have a quote, don’t estimate it.

  • pocrow-av says:

Did he “love” it, or did he “jump on Oprah’s couch love” it?

    • mifrochi-av says:

Depends – is The Flash going to take the kids, move out, and win sole custody because clearly it has some dirt on him?

  • thegobhoblin-av says:

This is not the ringing endorsement Tom thinks it is.

    • cosmicghostrider-av says:

No no no… this is WBD throwing a likeable star at The Flash to help negate the Ezra Miller hate. This isn’t just Tom Cruise’s plum opinion. This is marketing.

      • thegobhoblin-av says:

Once again, the true villain is Gotham’s most devious antagonist . . . The Marketer!

      • marnercalgeus-av says:

Sure, it’s marketing, but does the average moviegoer even know who Ezra Miller is, let alone be aware of all the shady stuff they’ve been involved in?

  • antonrshreve-av says:

So does this mean Tom Cruise is going to be Reverse Flash in the sequel (likely with a post-credits teaser), or?

Not that I really care one way or the other, but haven’t they been talking about this movie for what seems like four years already? And it’s still not out yet?!?

    • nameofusr-av says:

Oh, they actually announced the movie and Miller’s casting back in 2014, the same month that the Flash show on The CW premiered, I believe. And now it’ll come out AFTER that show has wrapped up its nine-season run. THAT’S how long this movie has been in development. A nine-season TV show about the same character came and went in the time it took for them to make ONE movie.

    • pocrow-av says:

If this movie was any more troubled, Chris Pine would get spat on by a costar during the premiere.

  • mark-t-man-av says:

Tom Cruise loves The Flash?  Well, he’s not the only one…

  • igotlickfootagain-av says:

Of course he loved it. Cruise’s need for speed is well documented.

  • cosmicghostrider-av says:

This is HILARIOUS. So their big strategy for the negative buzz around Ezra Miller is to sit down big likeable mainstream star of the moment privately and say he loves The Flash.

    That’s fucking hilarious.

    • arriffic-av says:

Yes, that private screening and subsequent enthusiastic review were not carefully orchestrated at all.

    • ignatiusreillysvalve-av says:

It’s dumber than that. Ezra Miller is in trouble for basically trying to start their own cult…so they find noted cult frontman and apologist Tom Cruise and ask him to vouch. Not sure who the audience for this kind of marketing is, but they need help bad.

  • tyenglishmn-av says:

Producers should just start saying this about any movie they’ve made, I don’t think I’ve ever seen an article about Cruise responding to or correcting anything

  • drips-av says:

Dang, he actually looks a little haggard in that pic. At least by Tom Cruise standards.  Look at that, even the Mona Lisa is falling apart.

    • mifrochi-av says:

Tom Cruise has looked like a decent replica of Tom Cruise for years now. I remember seeing The Mummy in a hospital room and trying to figure out who the aging Tom Cruise-type lead actor was, before it hit me.

    • amahzingme-av says:

In the last Mission: Impossible movie, you can definitely tell the scenes he filmed after he broke his ankle because he looks pretty rough in them.

  • cosmicghostrider-av says:

I wasn’t going to see this because of the Ezra Miller scandals but now that likeable mega star Tom Cruise has seen and loved it I’ve completely changed my mind!
