It’s not exactly a spoiler, at this point, to note that Cassian Andor is a man with a clock ticking over his head. After all, Diego Luna’s thief turned Rebel spy was introduced almost seven years ago in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, famously the one Star Wars movie where any and all “bad feelings” about what might happen to a characters ended up being entirely justified.

Even so, it’s somewhat surprising to hear how hard Tony Gilroy—whose TV prequel series centered on Cassian’s early life, Andor, has become the consistent critical darling of the Star Wars streaming universe—is willing to go to get Cassian to that proscribed end point. This is per a recent interview Gilroy did with Empire, revealing that the Disney+ show’s second season will almost certainly be its last, given that its final few episodes will cover “the last three days before Rogue One.” And since there’s not much for its title hero to do after Rogue One except, like, be space dust…

Of course, the irony here is that those things that make Andor so good—its brutal, nuanced depiction of life under the Empirel; its often-rapid pace; its relentless dedication to stakes—are exactly what seem to be driving Gilroy to take the show to its natural conclusion quite so soon. “Look, man,” Gilroy says in the interview, “I’m not trying to make a career here; if anything I’m on the downhill side of a long career. But this is an opportunity. This is 1,500 pages of the most dynamic material in these people’s lives to deal with. We got it right the first time, and you don’t want to let your foot off the gas.”

Andor’s second season is still filming; no word, exactly, on when it’ll arrive on Disney+, but Gilroy will apparently be driving it like he stole it when it gets here.

I thought it had already been announced this was last season, and would end where Rogue One begins.
But hey, nice for it to be confirmed, again. And with different wording.
    Content!

I admire Gilroy’s lack of greed here. But I’m someone who bristles instinctively at the word “franchise.”

It has but it’s new info that this will go right up to the start of Rogue 1.You know what it’s like, sometimes they leave at least a small time period in there just in case they can resurrect the series and wring a bit more out of it.

So Rogue One will start where this one ends?

Wasn’t “Andor” long broadcast as only being a couple seasons? What makes it great is the finality pre baked into it. Also what made it great is the free world it has to work with. The time period of “Revenge of the Sith” and “A New Hope” ANH has largely been untouched in live action other than “Andor” and “Rogue One” R1 it is a free environment to tell the stories. “Andor” showed us some of the stories pre ANH and R1. In R1 we see a Rebellion that is in pretty full bloom, I hope the new season shows us the parties coming into play that lead us to the Rebellion that gets us through the original trilogy.

This isn’t really ‘new things’ or ‘news’ as I believe it’s commonly called.

Anyhoo Star Wars watching order just got longer (for the better).Andor 1 & 2 then Rogue One then Episode 4.People can whine about the other films amongst themselves 😃

    • jodyjm13-av says:

      Not even Episode V?

      • wrightstuff76-av says:

Episode V is great, but then you have to decide are you watching the prequel trilogy then Jedi or Jedi followed by the prequel trilogy? Why give yourself that hassle?
Alternatively have fun and end the story with Episode IV. 😃

Episode V dead in a ditch, apparently. But really, thanks for underlining how unhinged the parent take is.

As a 13 year old seeing A New Hope in the theater way back when and loving it, then being nonplussed by every other SW film, I wholeheartedly support this binge list. In my mind Luke kissed the hot damsel in distress, not his (checks notes) twin sister.

I think Carrie Fisher had the best take on what order to watch the Star Wars films: “Watch the ones I’m in and then do whatever the hell you want.”

    Cool Sing Street reference

  • tscarp2-av says:

And there you have why the original UK The Office towers over the meandering, oh-no-will-Pam-and-Jim-almost-break-up-again tedium of, well, every US episode after Michael Scott left (and honestly, a handful of the ones before he did as well). Brevity.

I hope there’s an appearance by General Madine and his pointed headed British haircut.

  • sentientbeard-av says:

God the first season is so good. Definitely the best Star Wars released post-OT.

  • viktor-withak-av says:

Fingers crossed for Felicity Jones cameo

      There’s always a chah-nce.

    • bashful1771-av says:

Why not have Andor disappear for two entire episodes and have a Jyn Erso standalone adventure?

      • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

I’m so tuned out I have to constantly remind myself that Andor is a constantly frowning dude and not a forest moon with an incomplete yet fully operational battle station.

  • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

It’ll “barrel” at the same glacial pace as season 1? Whoo…better strap myself in for that!

  • SquidEatinDough-av says:

Will they make the show exciting this time?

  • ragsb-av says:

Great! That’s precisely what I was hoping for when I saw the finale

  • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

lot of people going ‘i knew that already, they announced it’ as if past star wars announcements mean anything.

  • jhhmumbles-av says:

The only Star Wars show I finished then immediately wanted to watch again. It took a template and ran with it brilliantly while still maintaining the franchise’s sense of identity. The Last Jedi is an admirable Star Wars outlier that provides good food for thought, but I can see how a lot of people thought it didn’t feel like Star Wars. Andor puts you right into the gritty world of a A New Hope and explores distinctly that world in a totally different way. It feels new and familiar at the same time and in just the right way. It’s a “serious” show that almost miraculously earns its seriousness.  Anyway, I’m a fan. I hope they maintain the same highwire act in the second season.

Wait, its filming right now? I would have thought it would be paused considering the writer’s strike. Had all the scripts been finished and they are continuing to film much like House of the Dragon is doing?

  • karen0222-av says:

That’s gonna be a real roller coaster ride, will there be any overlap with Rogue One? The 3 days is really cutting it short.
