As Bumblebee might say with his radio-talking in a very on-the-nose needle drop ahead of the big fight scene, “don’t call it a comeback, I been here for years.” Yes, in a domestic box office upset, Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts has taken out Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse after a heated battle for top spot of the weekend box office. The Transformers movie—the seventh live-action film in the series—out-debuted the last two films in that franchise, the pretty good Bumblebee ($21 million) and the horrible The Last Knight ($44 million), with $60 million. That was enough to barely beat Across The Spider-Verse, made $55 million in its second week and already has a total of $225 million. (It won this week, but Paramount will be throwing a parade if Rise Of The Beasts can meet that total.)

Speaking of things just barely beating other things: The Little Mermaid’s total after three weeks is just a few million ahead of Across The Spider-Verse, and it only added $22 million to that total this week (still a lot, but it’s all relative). Finishing out the top five are Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 ($7 million this week, $335 million after six weeks) and The Boogeyman ($6 million this week, $24 million after two).

The bottom half of the top 10 doesn’t have any newcomers, but it does have Fast X and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, both of which you can rent at home now and both of which made fairly good money despite that (Fast X made $5 million in its fourth week, Mario made $2 million in its 10th week). After that we have About My Father, The Machine, and Past Lives (in a small rollout with only 26 screens).

The full top 10 is below, thanks to Box Office Mojo.

  • Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts
  • Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse
  • The Little Mermaid
  • Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3
  • The Boogeyman
  • Fast X
  • The Super Mario Bros. Movie
  • About My Father
  • The Machine
  • Past Lives

How much boogey-ing actually occurs in this new Boogeyman film? The last few have left me cold.

I’m not sure how much of an upset it is. There have been virtually no examples of the newest blockbuster failing to unseat the previous one on its debut weekend over the past few years. Pretty much every time a movie wins more than one weekend in a row, it’s a result of there being no real competition. It would have been incredibly embarrassing if the Transformers movie didn’t place first. And frankly, it probably wouldn’t have if it didn’t take all the premium screens from AtSV. At my local theaters, there are far more people seeing Spider-Man even though it’s only on regular screens. In fact, according to Box Office Mojo, Transformers only won Friday, and by enough of a margin that it was able to hold on even though Spider-Man made more money Saturday and Sunday.

What…. there have been tonne of examples? Top Gun Maverick? It’s too early for me to bother to do research to dispute you properly but I call fowl on your claim. No.

How about December and Avatar 2? Like…. your logic is askew.

Neither of those movies had any real competition their second weeks. Avatar 2 pretty notoriously arrived before eight weeks of dead air. After six weeks of coming in number 1, it was eventually beat by 80 For Brady, which wasn’t bad, but also wasn’t a blockbuster.
It’s summer now, so the big movies are coming out almost every week. Even still, there’s nothing up against The Flash for two weeks, and unless it performs beyond every expectation, it will drop down when Indiana Jones 5 comes out on that third week. The closest counter example I know of is when Spider-Man: No Way Home was out. It beat both Sing 2 and Matrix: Resurrections. They were both pretty sorry excuses for blockbusters, but they are at least established IP, and the first Sing made pretty good money even up against Rogue One in 2016. You can make an even worse case for Lightyear losing to Jurassic World last year, but despite being Pixar and technically previous IP at that, I don’t think it qualifies as a blockbuster at all.

A film making the Top 10 only despite playing in only 26 theatres is pretty extraordinary… though of course it does mean that other movies around that dollar amount are really struggling.

It seems you’re missing a “which” after the comma.

Webs are flowing out like endless webs across a paper cup
They spider wildly as they make their way across the Spiderverse…
Pools of spiders waves of joy are crawling through my open mind, exciting and inviting me…
Images of spider light which crawl around me with a million eyes
They call me on and on across the Spiderverse…
Thoughts meander like a spider sat inside a letter box
They tumble blindly as they make their way across the Spiderverse…
Sounds of spiders shades of life are creeping through my open ears, exciting and inviting me…
Limitless the spider love which shines around you like a million buns
It calls you on and on across the Spiderverse…
    Hai guru spider, ummmmmmmm…

I caved and made plans to see Guardians for a second time this upcoming weekend. Fuck Volume 3 is good. Best MCU film since Endgame (not afraid to say that).

It’s been 2 weeks, and TLM has only made $24 million in profit 😂

i’m gonna ‘well acktually’ here a little and say the only reason transformers ‘won’ is because transformers ‘weekend’ includes the thursday previews. technically speaking, spider-man made more money between thursday and sunday, but its thursday doesn’t count to the weekend.

the new Spiderman animated movie is soooo boooooring, making animation of people talking on a roof for 1 hour is simply fucked up.
