Taylor Swift has finally locked herself down a working actor boyfriend. It turns out all she needed to do was date a football player first. Travis Kelce is continuing to take full advantage of his new golden ticket to Hollywood with a role in Grotesquerie, the latest horror series from Ryan Murphy (via Deadline). Plot details probably won’t be revealed until the show actually premieres sometime this fall, but we do know he’ll be appearing opposite at least Niecy Nash-Betts, Courtney B. Vance, and Lesley Manville, with potentially more to come.

This announcement comes on the heels of Kelce’s appointment to the head of the class as host of Are You Smarter Than A Celebrity?, an upcoming twist on early-2000s game show, Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?. He’s also served as executive producer on two films—SXSW premiere My Dead Friend Zoe and upcoming Jean-Michel Basquiat documentary King Pleasure—acted in an episode of the 2020 Fred Armisen, Tim Heidecker, and John C. Reilly comedy, Moonbase 8, and even hosted what A.V. Club reviewer Trae DeLellis deemed a “season-best” episode of Saturday Night Live last year.

Please Don’t Destroy – Self-Defense – SNL

Is he actually any good? We’ll let you decide for yourself. (You can watch DeLellis’ pick for MVP sketch above.) Even if this isn’t up your alley, Murphy does have a particular talent for molding non-actors into at least passable screen talents. Lady Gaga had appeared in a few smaller productions, but really got to flex her acting chops to the public at large in American Horror Story: Hotel in 2015. She won a Golden Globe for the role, and now she’s a bona fide movie star. Kim Kardashian featured in the latest installment of the long-running series in a performance A.V. Club writer Saloni Gajjar called “surprisingly promising.” And that’s Kim Kardashian.

But wait, wasn’t it the other Kelce who retired last year? Don’t worry, you didn’t get them confused. Somehow, Travis is still finding time to play tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, on a contract that locks him in until at least 2027 (per Forbes). At that time, however, he’ll be 38, which is definitely old, in football years. It’s not like he needs another career; he’s currently the highest-paid tight end in NFL history and will receive $34.25 million for each of the next two years. (Each!) Still, when you’re dating a literal billionaire, we guess you do have to keep up somehow.

i almost respect this guy’s craven desire to just be The Most Famous. it’s so transparent and it’s mostly working.

Is it? Or does he just enjoy acting? I have very little opinion on him as a person or as a football player. Really all I know about him is from watching him host SNL, and he seemed like he was having a lot of fun and he was actually not bad at it, for a non-actor. He could just be a guy who likes trying things and has the access to do so.  I think he’s just a guy who has enough natural talent and charisma that fame is going to find him regardless of whether he’s looking for it.

it can be two things. i’m sure he ‘likes’ doing a podcast, but i’m sure he likes the brand deals and that it raises his profile as much if not more.

Well yeah I’m not saying he doesn’t like the fame. lol It is obvious that he enjoys it.  I was just disputing the characterization as a “craven” quest for it.  People can like being famous without being craven about it, but I acknowledge I know very little about him and lots of folks know more on the subject than I do, so take my observations for the very little they’re worth.

I actually do agree that he’s charismatic, but come on. Dude is THIRTSY for fame. I don’t follow follow football at all, and even I knew who he was before he started performatively dating the Most Famous Woman in the Western World because he’d had a reality show, hosted SNL, and filmed commercials for God only knows how many companies/products.

        • electricsheep198-av says:

I’ll take your word for it, but he missed me. lol I don’t follow football and when he was announced as a host for SNL I had to look him up to see who he was. I’d literally never heard of or seen him. I’ve seen him a lot since then, of course.

It can definitely be two things. While his star is fading, Peyton Manning definitely had a good during and post-football acting spots, including one of my favorite SNL bits ever

NYT had a massive piece about how his meteoric rise to media fame was completely calculated and orchestrated almost entirely by his PR team, which is run by two childhood friends from Cincinnati. Kelce’s deep well of charisma (and good looks) definitely played a large part, but the dude is 100% a try-hard.

        • electricsheep198-av says:

Well, I say! This is something I didn’t know. I still dispute the characterization as “craven” but I see I was at least wrong thinking he just fell into fame.

OK, so, that was a pretty decent performance on SNL. Guy might have some comedy chops.

“Is he actually any good?”All I can tell you is that he was perfect as a creepy guy in a American Doll store.
