The Norse Gods saw the growing hype around Paul Mescal’s Gladiator movie, upcoming Jeff-Goldblum-as-Zeus series Kaos, and season two of Percy Jackson And The Olympians, and said, “Hold my drinking horn.” Well, after 2000 years of burning and pillaging (and one anachronistic Chris Hemsworth representation), Odin, Thor, and the rest of the gang are finally getting their day in the streaming sun.

Netflix announced Zach Snyder’s Twilight Of The Gods all the way back in 2021, but the Rebel Moon director famously doesn’t do anything if it isn’t really, really long. Ergo, the streamer just announced the animated series’ premiere date today, three whole years later. That’s okay, though—Valhalla has been waiting for centuries. What’s a few years more? Twilight Of The Gods officially premieres September 19.

Billed by Netflix as “an all-new daring and spectacular animated vision of Norse mythology,” the official synopsis of Twilight Of The Gods reads as follows: “In a mythical world of great battles, great deeds and great despair, Leif, a mortal King, is saved on the battlefield by Sigrid, an iron-willed warrior with whom he falls in love. On their wedding night, Sigrid and Leif survive a wrath of terror from Thor, which sets them—and a crew of crusaders—on an against all odds and merciless mission for vengeance. This heroic story of love, loss and revenge, is a journey to Hell and beyond… across fantastical lands, battlefields fierce and bloody, and wars waged against Gods and demons.”

The streamer also released a bloody first look at the series today, which recalls the art style of classics like Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend Of Korra. “The evolution is similar to how I evolve a live-action scene,” Snyder, who previously directed animated feature Legend Of The Guardians: The Owls Of Ga’Hoole, said of working in the medium (via The Hollywood Reporter). “It’s an amazingly pure brain-to-animation process. It’s incredibly rewarding.”

The series was also co-created by Jay Oliva and Eric Carrasco. It features vocal talent from Sylvia Hoeks as Sigrid, Stuart Martin as Leif, Rahul Kohli as Egill, Paterson Joseph as Loki, Jamie Clayton as Seid-Kona, Pilou Asbæk as Thor, Birgitte Hjort Sørensen as Hervor, Kristofer Hivju as Andvari, Thea Sofie Loch Næss as Thyra, John Noble as Odin, and Peter Stormare as Ulfr.

If it’s how Rebel Moon seems to be working, it’ll be announced roughly a couple of months after it comes out.

can’t think of a worse showcase for zack snyder slow-mo than the sub-newgrounds animation style on display here.

Zack Snyder should direct a three hour long epic animated movie about that “Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiney” song

“The streamer also released a bloody first look at the series today, which recalls the art style of classics like Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend Of Korra.”Does it?   I watched a lot of both those shows and they do not look like the trailer above at all.   This looks a lot more like that Netflix Klaus animated movie.

I know people keep saying Zach Snyder is the nicest guy in person so why does all his pro work keep courting the White Supremacist audience?

I want to say something snarky like, “Because white supremacists aren’t cartoonish mustache-twirling villains that advertise their bigotry 24/7” but when it comes to Snyder, I think it’s because for most of his professional career, he has included objectivism in all of his works. Maybe he’s not doing it consciously, but it seems to represent his worldview in one form or another.Randian objectivism is a pretty stupid philosophy that some people flirt with in college before they grow out of it because if you think about it too hard, it falls apart – which is perfect for a guy like Snyder, whose ethos can be summed up as, “You’re thinking about it way too hard.” Anyway, on a shallow, surface level, objectivism appeals most to those on the conservative end of the political spectrum, thus you get stuff that looks like it would appeal to white supremacists (even though FWIW, Snyder seems to be the one who made the effort not to cast an all-lily-white Justice League).

Norse mythology that could be interes..oh Snyder , ah fuck that then …hard pass. The thumbnail made it look like it was a Cartoon Saloon style animation* , but yeah once it moving it looked …not great.(Now if they did a mature animated series about Norse gods , or even better Celtic ones , that I’d watch)

  • explosionsinc-av says:

Oh good, now we get to watch him completely misunderstand ancient mythology just like we got to watch him completely misunderstand modern mythology with his shitty DC movies.
