The NCIS franchise—the unstoppable, unkillable, inescapable TV procedural juggernaut that capitalizes cruelly on our shared obsession with crimes that take place on or near the water—is now headed even further afield. Which is to say that THR is reporting this evening that CBS is moving forward on the long-in-development NCIS: Hawai’i, with BH90210's Vanessa Lachey stepping up to become the franchise’s first female lead.

As with previous spin-offs Los Angeles and New Orleans (to say nothing of the just-renewed mothership show, still the most-watched scripted drama on TV), Hawai’i concerns itself with an elite department of the Navy’s beloved Boat Crimes division, in this case based out of Pearl Harbor. (It’s not actually called “Boat Crimes,” that’s just how we always file it in our heads.) Lachey will play Jane Tennant, whose major character traits are…Actually, you know what? Let’s just go ahead and paste in the studio description here:

A woman in a male-dominated profession, she’s thrived in a system that’s pushed back every step of the way through equal parts confidence and strategy. She’s also a mother raising her children mostly on her own and has to balance her duty to her kids and her country.

Lachey will be joined on the series by Yasmine Al-Bustami (the tough up-and-comer not afraid to bend the rules to get things done) and Jason Antoon (playing the all-important Says What’s On The Computer Man). Meanwhile, showrunning duties will be handled by Chris Silber, whose experiences on the soon-to-be-shuttered NCIS: New Orleans were apparently positive enough that everyone involved felt comfortable handing him the reins on the brand new show even as his current one sails off into the sunset.

You WILL spell it with an apostrophe.

  • blpppt-av says:

Ahhh, so it will be Hawaii 5-0 with navy investigators. Makes sense.

I remember an early criticism of Hannibal and its initial villain-of-the-week premise was ‘it seems unrealistic that there would be so many gimmicky serial killers out there at the same time.” NCIS has apparently aired over 800 episodes, all about Navy crimes… at what point does the US Government say “this branch is just RIFE with criminal activity – we need to shut it down”?

    • pgthirteen-av says:

If I’m to believe the CBS Evening News of late … never.

    • dr-darke-av says:

It’s the Navy — “RIFE with criminal activity” is Standard Operating Procedure, and has been since Odysseus took ten years to sail home.

Don’t forget that it also shares a universe with Scorpion, MacGyver, Hawaii Five-O, and Magnum P.I.

This is my beef with most all network TV series. they have taken that formula and drilled it so far underground, I just stopped watching. The Wire, Dexter, Sopranos, Breaking Bad, etc have spoiled me. I love that shows have evolved and actually want to tell a story without 30 min of predictable filler, but it feels like no one for network TV wants to put forth any effort anymore. I think House was the last one I actually enjoyed.

Considering how incredibly toxic just about every backstage atmosphere seems to be with CBS procedural dramas now, I mostly just want to wish her luck.

    Looki’ing forward to thi’is.

I didn’t know Drew Lachey’s sister-in-law is an actress! Next you’ll tell me Chicken of the Sea is made out of fish.

    Will Nick Lachey guest star?

  • cscurrie-av says:

There needs to be a way to bring CCH Pounder onto this show from the New Orleans franchise. She always classes things up.So what sort of guest character is Nick going to play? Just wondering.Since this is CBS and all… will any Hawaii 5-0 alumni be showing up?

It’s a question of if, not when, since there is apparently only one food truck in Oahu.

If they can get Katrina Law and Meaghan Rath, they definitely should

      • blackoak-av says:

(Cannot believe I know this but…) Katrina Law is joining the main or original or whatever NCIS show this coming season.

    • badkuchikopi-av says:

If she’s not available at least get Glen Howerton doing his impression of her.

    • shotmyheartandiwishiwasntok-av says:

In-universe, Steve, Kono, and Chin are all on the mainland. I don’t know if Scott Caan would be willing to return. I’ll be sad if the only alumni they get is Junior. :/

“ …on the soon-to-be-shuttered NCIS: New Orleans”Can we now please find something interesting again for Scott Bakula on TV? Quantum Leap reboot? Please?!

    • dr-darke-av says:

I was thinking he and Gary Cole could team up on a SF show that absolutely does not in the slightest resemble either STAR TREK or BABYLON 5!

  • edkedfromavc-av says:

    Oh. Another NCIS show. Hooray.

  • bassplayerconvention-av says:

At least being set on an island (or I suppose really a series of islands), there’s a decent chance that there will actually be more boat crimes than usual for the show to solve.

  • shotmyheartandiwishiwasntok-av says:

It’s funny they are leaning into the “girl power” aspect since the Mothership had a female boss in Seasons 3-5 and NCIS: LA has had a female boss for its entire run, even when Linda Hunt had to back out for a while due to a car accident.Anyway, it’s rather funny that this will be the THIRD CBS cop show based in Hawaii, and all three exist in the same universe! Apparently Hawaii is the most dangerous state in the US.
I’m sure there will be a crossover with Magnum P.I. early on, but I do wonder if they’ll get any of the Hawaii Five-O cast, since the task force is technically still around. It would both pain me and make me laugh if the only crossover was of the cast eating at a branch of Kamekona’s.

  • notochordate-av says:

Serious question, are there any Hawaiians in this show?

  • paraduck-av says:

If you’re going out of your way to use the indigenous spelling of the name, you need to use an ʻokina (ʻ), not a curly apostrophe (’), between the last 2 vowels. It marks a glottal stop and serves as a separate letter of the alphabet.
