Walton Goggins to play the villain in MGM’s Tomb Raider reboot

Aux Features Film

According to Variety, MGM’s Tomb Raider reboot has cast Walton Goggins as the film’s villain. He’ll be appearing alongside Ex Machina’s Alicia Vikander, who is replacing Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft, the Tomb Raider herself. The Variety story doesn’t offer any details about Goggins’ character, but there’s a good chance he’ll be playing a crazy cult leader obsessed with magical artifacts if the movie is taking any plot inspiration from the recent Tomb Raider games.

Barring that, maybe he’ll be more of a low-stakes villain, like a lawyer trying to stop Croft from raiding tombs and stealing magical artifacts that don’t belong to her. He could be like Walter Peck from Ghostbusters, occasionally popping up to reprimand her for killing dinosaurs and destroying ancient temples while doing cool parkour shit. Really, the simple act of solving some ancient puzzle could have a huge impact on an important historical site, but that’s probably why Lara Croft is a “tomb raider” and not an archaeology professor like Indiana Jones.

Anyway, Tomb Raider will be excavated from its resting place and put on display in movie theaters on March 16, 2018.
