HBO has released a trailer for Beforeigners, a six-part sci-fi drama that debuted in Norway last year and is just now beginning a U.S. run. The high-concept tale, the first Norwegian-language series produced by HBO Europe, explores a world in which people from the Stone Age, the Viking Age, and the 19th century are mysteriously transported into modern-day Norway. There, some integrate into society—like, for example, an 11th century shield-maiden-turned-investigator played by Krista Kosonen—while others remain enemies of the people. There’s also, apparently, a killer on the loose. Okay, then.

In an interview with Variety, co-creator Anne Bjornstad discussed how the show serves as “an allegory of the refugee crisis and migration issues,” and it’s clear from the trailer that the divide between the present population and those from the past is stark—some call them “beforeigners,” though it’s more polite to say they have a “multi-temporal background.”

Watch the trailer below.

You can watch the first episode now. New episodes will drop every Tuesday.

There is a subset of nerdy internet people who are either going to love this, or be infuriated by its historical inaccuracies.

Is this one of those shows where someone just drunkenly came up with the title and giggled and it turned into an actual thing?

I think the pressing question is, how many started metal bands?

Looks like catching up on that season of Better Call Saul that just hit Netflix is going to have to wait. Again.

Only the Scandinavians can take Roger Corman plots and turn it into HBO-tier prestige television.I now demand a Danish remake of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes especially in the age of climate change.

This actually looks pretty good. Gives me kind of Riverworld vibe.

Looks pretty good. The image of the guy in Victorian dress steering a horse and carriage while listening to an iPhone sold me.

Weird. Points for the name, though

Wait, I thought Norway’s universal health care system, free college for a select few and robust social welfare system cured racism and misogyny. That’s weird that they have a white nationalism problem.

I can’t think of seeing this concept before and I like it. We got people from the present going to the past or the future and people from the future coming to our present. But other than Bill and Ted and Encino Man, I can’t think of people from the past coming to our present.

I’ve no idea why it’s coming to me, but was that part of the plot of Kate & Leopold?

A quick Wikipedia perusal suggests that yeah, that’s the case. And now that I’m thinking about it, Jean Reno was in a few terrible movies where he’s a medieval fella and gets thrust into present day. So, yes, it appears it’s been done a couple of times, but always stupidly.  This actually looks kinda gnarly.

    • maymar-av says:

I only know this because I had to look up what the American remake was called, but Jean Reno did a trilogy called The Visitors about a French knight sent to the present (I remembered nothing else about Just Visiting, the remake, except that he and Tara Reid were in it).

Good on you for forgetting that Austin Powers existed, if only we could all be so lucky. Captain America did it too, tho neither of these involved more than a few decades time difference.

Neil Stephenson’s novel The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O was about a government agency that developed time travel. They had a collection of people from the past brought into the modern era, mostly witches but some knights, Vikings, etc.

I really enjoyed this book mostly for the concept of how Photography and Magic interacted with each other, which was a completely fresh idea to meA more middling book but with another fun time travel concept was The River of No Return – some people have the power to travel forwards through time at the moment of their death. It’s set both in 1815 and present day.

Well, there’s Alley Oop, a time-travelling caveman. Or Edgar Rice Burroughs’ The Eternal Savage. Neither are movies/TV shows, but the concept has been around awhile. There’s also the shows The 4400 and Glitch. Although neither of those involved bringing back people from the far past.

Sleepy Hollow was a pretty great version of this (at least the first season or so), though definitely different genre. Ichabod Crane, Revolutionary War soldier, wakes up in Current Day “Sleepy Hollow” and has to stop the end times and also learn how to use showers, car doors and get’s upset at our sales tax

  • amazingpotato-av says:

The title almost sound like something they’d come up with on LEGENDS OF TOMORROW.

  • vishalbachan-av says:

Didnt magicians just have an episode with time/multiverse hopping Vikings?

  • bendbanana-av says:

Just like McGruff, she’s taking a bite out of crime.

All six episodes are available On Demand today— no need to wait for weekly releases.

  • mrdudesir-av says:

Randall, important correction, all 6 episodes are out on HBO NOW and I assume HBO Go.Pretty fantastic through 4 episodes so far.
