Knives Out quickly became one of the most beloved films of 2019, and its first follow-up is finally—almost—here. Netflix has shared a teaser for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, revealing the return of Daniel Craig’s private detective Benoit Blanc and his very distinctive accent.

“You expected a mystery,” the Southern sleuth narrates as the image of a gloved hand holding a gun flashes onscreen. “You expected a puzzle. But for one person on this island, this is not a game.”

This is still a teaser before a full trailer, so not much is given away. Netflix’s Tudum reveals the murder mystery’s characters are summoned to “a reclusive millionaire’s private island” by “a mysterious set of invitations.”

Like its predecessor, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery features an all-star ensemble cast, including Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista, Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, and Leslie Odom, Jr. The characters are seen inspecting what appears to be a literal puzzle box, an elaborate prop that is presumably key to cracking the case.

“So much of why I’m so into making these is that they just do bring me an intense amount of joy,” director Rian Johnson tells Tudum. “Working with Daniel in this genre and having fun with it and the humor, getting to work with a new group of actors every time, everything about it just brings me happiness.”

There is still no theatrical release date given beyond “this holiday season,” but the film is set to hit Netflix on December 23. If Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery does have a 45-day theatrical exclusive window as previously suggested, it can be expected in cinemas in November. A third installment in the series is already confirmed.

I know it’s Netflix, but I think they’d be foolish not to give this movie a real theatrical release, even if it’s just a month before it streams. Knives Out was a super fun experience at the movies (the Donuts speech towards the end killed in my screening), and this seems like it would make actual money based on how successful the first was.

I think Netflix is scrambling to find anything that might drive subscription sales, and this is one of the few properties likely to do that.  I agree it would do well in theaters and make them money that way, but presumably they expect their will be some stickiness among people who subscribe to Netflix to watch this and then don’t cancel.

There entire business model is based around people watching things on Netflix. Telling people to watch one of their movies at another business is the complete opposite of that.

FUN FACT!The title “Glass Onion” is a sly wink to the unused original title of the previous movie, “Chives Out.”

007 doing his best Foghorn Leghorn impression.  Stephen Root would have KILLED as Benoit Blanc.

I don’t disagree with the Stephen Root sentiment, but I think too many people look at Knives Out (and its upcoming sequels) as serious, realistic, grounded murder mysteries. The whole point of this series seems to be to take the murder mystery genre and turn it on its head, making it outlandish, comical and almost quirky.Craigs accent, ridiculous as it is, is awfully fitting and I feel like the film would lose a little bit of its charm if a more genuine accent was used.

Honestly, never watched the first one because of it. Got to the first scene with Benoit (balls) and just shitcanned the whoel movie. You’re absolutely correct; it should’ve been Root. Preferably using the same voice and cadence as his bank manager in Buster Scruggs.

      Fiddle-dee-dee!

Stephen Root would have KILLED as [fill in pretty much anything].I’m now imagining Jimmy James as a detective, and it actually works pretty darn well.(Bill Dauterive, less so)

  • maulkeating-av says:

    It shouldn’t be.

no involuntary barfing brought on by lying used as a plot device?tsk tsk

    • bcfred2-av says:

This time the character shits himself.“What’s that stench??”“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”“STAND UP!”

  • kleptrep-av says:

Hopefully Lakeith Stanfield makes a cameo appearance either at the beginning or the end of the flick.

    • dirtside-av says:

This and any future Knives Out movies should always end with Stanfield’s character showing up at the last second and being mad that he missed the whole thing.

  • razzle-bazzle-av says:

Oh, man. I was really hoping for a different accent this time (and in each subsequent movie).

  • michelemy-av says:

I’m excited to watch this, because I love mysteries and Rian Johnson, and am excited for more combos there… but Benoit Blanc was definitely not the thing I liked most about the original, so I’m a little disappointed that he is the through-line in the series. (Ana De Armas was the heart of the movie!)

5 min before posting the Glass Onion trailer on Twitter, Rian Johnson tweeted a picture of a Yoshi egg. Teasing something? (I have no clue.)

  • uselessbeauty1987-av says:

This looks like fun! I’ll give it a watch.

glad that (1) Rian Johnson has found a new thing that he loves so much and is novel in so many ways to act as recompense for all the bullshit he had to put up with re: the Last Jedi (the best of the most recent 3 Star Wars movies IMO), and (2) Daniel Craig (my #1 big boy crush LOL) also has a new franchise that he seems to enjoy and that doesn’t seem to be absolute torture for him a la James Bond.  Looking forward to this movie and the next one.
