Lana Del Rey is the queen of melancholic songs awash in sultry vocals and ethereal vibes, the likes of which have cemented themselves as ballads for a sad girl’s afternoon. While promoting her brand new Norman Fucking Rockwell, she paid homage to another titan of the pop universe: Ariana Grande.

BBC Radio’s Live Lounge hosted Del Rey for a cover of Grande’s “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored,” which sounds as pleasantly stoned as Del Rey’s “Doin’ Time.” Do we wish she’d memorized the lyrics? Sure, but, c’mon, she’s a little busy these days.

As you can see above, Grande loved it. It’s not a surprise that Del Rey chose a Grande tune, either, what with her being a vocal fan of thank u, next. The two haven’t collaborated yet, but that’ll change later this week when their joint song with Miley Cyrus drops. Called “Don’t Call Me Angel,” it was recorded for the new Charlie’s Angels reboot coming out in November with Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska. With the apparent mutual respect between the two artists, maybe a more personal collaboration will happen down the line. We sure hope so.

A smattering of vocal FX and lyrics on an iPhone screen. The effort shows. That sounded boring as shit.Aso stop saying “we” in your articles. There is no world where you’re speaking for more than just yourself. Unless it’s a royal We in which case fuck the monarchy too.

Man, I can’t even look at a picture of Ariana Taco Bell Grande without feeling like I should have a seat right there. Anyone over the age of 25 who is into her gives me the fucking creeps.

    • yesidrivea240-av says:

Anyone over the age of 25 who is into her gives me the fucking creeps.Lol.It’s funny because she’s 26 (I had to look it up) and I totally get what you mean.

      • yummsh-av says:

She looks like a child! In the wake of pond scum like Jeffrey Epstein, I think this country needs to come to terms with how badly they want to fuck children.

        • kanyeisdoinghisbest-av says:

i listen to her stellar pop songs but it sounds like you have your own stuff you’re going through, so

          • yummsh-av says:

Yeah, my ‘own stuff’ being the fact that sexualizing young women who appear underage is fucking disgusting.Enjoy your pop songs.

          • smcat-av says:

She’s literally an adult and her sexuality and how you interpret it sounds like a you problem.

          • kanyeisdoinghisbest-av says:

Homie she’s 26, you’re saying she shouldn’t dress how she wants because she looks young? And that people shouldn’t appreciate her work because of the implications of how her body looks? Should I also not be watching any Timothee Chalamet movies or…I get what your point, but it’s a bad one.

          • yummsh-av says:

I’m not sure I want to be taking any advice on making bad points from someone called KanyeIsDoingHisBest.First off, she’s a pop star. I doubt she’s ‘dressing how she wants’ 100% of the time. Second, I said nothing about people appreciating her work. What I’m saying has nothing to do with that, and I’m not dumb enough to think I’m ever going to change anyone’s mind in that regard. Listen to what you want, watch what you want, but don’t try and convince me that the over-sexualizing of young women in this country (and probably the world over) isn’t a problem. I’m not the only person who thinks this. Hell, I’m not even the only person in these comments who thinks this. And yes, it’s most likely a problem with young men in (and out) of the public eye, as well. Thanks for bringing it up.

First off, Kanye IS doing his best. It’s just, you know, not great.Second, it’s not that she (or her marketing) is choosing what she’s wearing, but that you’re saying it’s unacceptable to present a certain way because of how it’s received by creeps. That’s not her problem, she’s free to present however she wants. Third, you literally said that anyone over 25 who listens to her is a creep, so fuck right off. That’s the main reason your posts have been such a wreck; you’re projecting and moralizing like crazy. Like I said, it’s weirder to me that you’re the one saying “she looks like a child and is really hot, someone should stop her!”

    • sirwarrenoates-av says:

Fully agree. Also as a Dad with daughters  I associate her with those terrible tween shows she was on…I definitely think if you’re a guy over 25 and not gay into her it seems creepy. Shit, no matter the gender or sexual preference…

      • yummsh-av says:

I didn’t even know she was on any TV shows, but I remember a few years ago, her brother Frankie was on Big Brother, and he was the most intolerable human being I’ve ever encountered. So I can only imagine.

    • mruffy-av says:

Every time she tries to look sexy, and tries is the key word here, she just looks like a six year old dressing up in Mommy’s clothes and makeup.

  • nilus-av says:

Every time I see an article about Ariana Grande I think three things1) That girl looks like she is 122) Ariana Grande sounds like an order at Taco Bell3) I can’t figure out if I know who Pete Davidson is because he dated Ariana Grande or if I know who Ariana Grande is because she dated Pete Davidson.

    • yipesstripes123-av says:

I always think “I’m afraid I’ll never get over Ariana Grande….”

    • michelle-fauxcault-av says:

Don’t forget about the time that she went to a donut shop, picked up a donut that she hadn’t paid for and licked it, then put it back like that was normal fucking behavior, all while saying “I hate Americans” and somehow that didn’t even derail her career the slightest fucking bit.

      • kanyeisdoinghisbest-av says:

that all sounds cool as fuck

      • pocrow-av says:

It gave her about six bad months, but that was between albums.

      • triohead-av says:

If only she picked it up, she just leaned over and licked the donuts that were still on the tray, which is somehow even weirder.

      • fireupabove-av says:

She should’ve said “You know, I’m automatically attracted to donuts — I just start licking them. It’s like a magnet. I just lick. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab them by the sprinkles. You can do anything.” Then she could be President!

Here’s another one of those AV Club headlines that looks like it was assembled through some strange amalgam of Alphabet Soup, Magnetic Poetry and well brand vodka.

I’m so tired of Lana Del Rey’s “melancholic songs awash in sultry vocals and ethereal vibes”.
No, I don’t like her version of Doin’ Time, because the original is so much better.

    • boner-of-a-lonely-heart-1987-av says:

From what I’ve heard of her music, I can only assume “sultry and ethereal” is PR speak for “lethargic and heavily medicated”.

    • cigarette41-av says:

      LOL someone stanning for Sublime.

      • yesidrivea240-av says:

Sure buddy. I grew up in the area they are from, still live here. I have never met a local that dislikes them. You call it stanning, I call it appreciating a local band that made it big.

  • tormentedthoughts3rd-av says:

I miss the Lana Del Rey from her first album. It’s a modern classic of pop songs with a touch of that 50s/60s lounge singing Nancy Sinatra vibe. And ever since Ultraviolence she has doubled down on the lounge singing noir film aesthetic without any of the pop.**Haven’t listened to latest album yet.

    • orangewaxlion-av says:

There’s a(n ex-?)Seattle pop artist named Prom Queen(/Leeni/etc. depending on which genre she’s working in) and I thought she had a similar vibe as early Lana, knowing retro-pop pastiche but with a slightly greater degree of camp and sometimes electronica. Then again I also thought she was a much bigger deal based on local media licensing and a stage show with a cool flyer, but it turns out there are hardly any YouTube views for any of her material, other than a Stranger Things/Twin Peaks theme interpolation from a few years ago.

  • smcat-av says:

There’s a disturbing amount of “I hate women and their sexuality makes me uncomfortable” couched as music and societal critique in this comment section.

  • anjouvalentine-av says:

“Cover” seems generous. This looks and sounds like she’s singing into a karaoke machine.
