Imagine, if you will, a world in which Chip and Dale existed on this mortal plane despite being animated chipmunks–and they were devastated by the cancelation of their TV show in the early ‘90s. If you can’t do it, the forthcoming Disney+ movie Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers can, and a new trailer shows us a better look at its blend of live-action and animation.

As shown in the previous teaser, Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers picks up in the present day, 30 years after the end of the TV series. Andy Samberg stars as Dale, who’s still coasting on his glory days and has undergone a controversial surgery to convert his 2D animation into a modern CGI style. John Mulaney’s Chip is content with his original look, and seemingly content with settling into a calm suburban life as an insurance agent. Of course, that won’t last for long when a new mystery comes to town.

CGI conversion isn’t the only shocking surgical procedure going on in this world. Cartoon characters are being kidnapped and dissected, and our beloved woodland creatures are determined to put a stop to it. Chip and Dale must team up with a hard-boiled detective voiced by J.K. Simmons to get to the bottom of the mystery, but an adult Peter Pan played by Will Arnett isn’t going to make things easy for them.

Like Ralph Breaks The Internet before it, Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers offers up a wide variety of references to other Disney properties. Amongst others, Moana, Thor, and Princess Leia cosplayers can be spotted in the glimpse of Dale’s autograph signing at Fan Con, where Lumiere from Beauty And The Beast is also making an appearance with his original 1991 look. Elsewhere, Flounder from The Little Mermaid is seen somehow living comfortably on land. Seth Rogen returns as the voice of the photorealistic version of Pumbaa from the 2019 remake of The Lion King; he also plays an axe-wielding human character with dated CGI. Other pop culture Easter eggs abound, including nods to The Wizard Of Oz and The Smurfs.

Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers arrives on Disney+ on May 20 and also co-stars Keegan-Michael Key, Chris Parnell, Eric Bana, KiKi Layne, and Tim Robinson.

I’m apparently in the minority, but man, everything about this movie is the exact opposite of what I wanted out of a Chip N Dale’s Rescue Rangers movie.

    • fulgrymm-av says:

Would it improve things to think of this as not a Chip n Dale’s movie, but rather a sequel to Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Because this seriously gives me the same sort of vibes.

    • sheermag-av says:

The fact they sound like adult men alone ruins the whole thing.

      • mjk333-av says:

Seriously… treating it as effectively a Roger Rabbit follow-up is a hook I could enjoy, but you know what they DIDN’T do in Roger Rabbit? Give the toons different voices when they weren’t acting. Giving Donald’s nephews distinctive voices in the new Ducktales was one thing – at least there, the voices fit.  Here, the new voices are just incredibly distracting and out of place.

    • bembrob-av says:

What’s even worse is whenever Chip speaks, all I can think of is Big Mouth, which I didn’t care for at all.

      • maulkeating-av says:

Similar. I cannot sanction Andy Samberg’s buffoonery, which appears to be he whole stick. You can just hear that they both recorded their lines with permanent shit-eating grins on their faces.

No we’re with you on this

To be fair, I don’t exactly have my finger on the pulse of the entire internet, but at least from the places I’ve been, you would not be in the minority.

    • interwebcommenter-av says:

I don’t think you’re in the minority on this. They might as well make a TaleSpin movie where Baloo is an Amazon delivery driver and Kit is just a TikTok creator along for the ride. No one wants to see that.

I’ve actually seen way more people super jazzed about the movie than I have people dreading it.

    • mikolesquiz-av says:

I *wanted* a straight up return of Rescue Rangers, but I’m willing to roll with this and see where it goes, I think.

  • docnemenn-av says:

It kind of looks like a 21st century Roger Rabbit, but way more smug about it.

  • liebkartoffel-av says:

I wish that they had genuinely animated Chip in 2D rather than copped out with cel shaded CGI, but otherwise this intrigues me.

So, take this with a MASSIVE grain of salt, but somebody saw a test screening of the film and posted up a summary on Reddit a few weeks back. Obviously, MAJOR spoilers ahead in the post…………..Gadget is in the film, but she’s kidnapped while being a miniature ScarJo stunt double on the set of Black Widow and isn’t rescued until the end of the film. As such, she spends most of the film in a Black Widow bodysuit. There’s also a Rescue Rangers fangirl named Ellie, who’s a regular human and takes up much of the film, like the regular humans in the recent Tom & Jerry film.
Originally, it seemed like the Big Bad was going to be Pluto, who was always pissed at Chip and Dale for always besting him in their old cartoons. The now-talking Pluto runs a video piracy business and uses that to chop up various 2D and 3D cartoons so he can take their powers and abilities and become “The Ultimate Toon.” He’s also the one who turns Chip’s ear into a dog ear in that one shot of the trailer. Once he’s defeated, he gets sent to the ToonTown dog pound via a car of the same design as Benny from Roger Rabbit. Though judging from the newest trailer, there were some rewrites and Peter Pan is the Big Bad now. Possibly. Anyway, the Frankenstein monster in the first trailer? That’s the Big Bad either way………
    … …..
    End spoiler.

“she spends most of the film in a Black Widow bodysuit”Furries are gonna love this

    • bembrob-av says:

This sounds more like someone’s fan-fic, which I can get behind but doubt this is what we’re getting.

      • shotmyheartandiwishiwasntok-av says:

I mean, we saw a similar “old character is actually the Big Bad” thing with the first Scooby-Doo movie and we already know the Frankenstein stuff is in the film, since we see the main hodge podge villain several times as well as Chip with Pluto’s ear.

  • laurenceq-av says:

The first trailer was more promising, but I’m still hopeful for this.

  • jbbb3-av says:

Serious question: do kids actually enjoy these meta-takes on children’s movies? It feels like the recent biggest hits (Encato, Pixar, etc.) tell earnest stories children can enjoy and this just seems like snarky in-jokes for 37 year olds who grew up with the show (me).

    • liebkartoffel-av says:

This seems almost exclusively oriented toward millennial 90s kids and it’s not particularly subtle about it.

    • maulkeating-av says:

The idea is to appeal to the profitable vein of nostalgia of man- and womanchildren while offering the plausible deniability of “It’s just a children’s movie, bro, why do hate kids?”

    • popsfreshenmeyer-av says:

Take it from yer dear ol’ Pops, kids love it when you talk down to them. Puts ‘em in their place and reminds ‘em who’s king ‘round here.

  • jonathanmichaels--disqus-av says:

I give them kudos, this is clearly the most adult oriented Disney has put their name on in forever.

  • nextchamp-av says:

I actually like the cel-shaded 2D look some of the characters have. I mean ACTUAL 2D would be nice, but this is a decent compromise. And I like the story is actually a bit geared more towards adults. Having said that: Definitely feels like they are trying really hard to cater to them and only them. Also, you can tell a lot of ADR is in this trailer cause the mouths do not match at all to a lot of the jokes.

  • antsnmyeyes-av says:

    John Mulaney’s performance seems off.

    • bembrob-av says:

That’s the worst part, imo. Chip sounds just like Andrew Glouberman from Big Mouth and I really couldn’t stand that show. That voice has no place in a Chip N’ Dale vehicle.

    • officermilkcarton-av says:

Could be just the way the trailer was cut, but nobody sounds like they were in the same room when it was recorded.

    • popsfreshenmeyer-av says:

Must have done these takes during his wild year.

  • recognitions69-av says:

Plot aside, this trailer looks TERRIBLE. Like the characters voices don’t seem to match their mouths for most of this trailer. That’s not a good sign. Also the 2D character design doesn’t look nearly as good as the old cartoons. Another bad sign.I’m going to take a wild guess and say yeah, this is going to be a major flop that discourages Disney from experimenting further, and that sucks.

    • orju-av says:

Am I the only one who saw Roger Rabbit dancing in the first trailer? Cause he’s there. Also whoever said no one’s interested in a Who Framed Roger Rabbit sequel after all this time is wrong. If not this movie then the prior one with Tom and Jerry should convince them otherwise. There’s still interest in that type of hybrid live action/hand drawn animation. If there weren’t movies like this would not keep being made. Just because you don’t make it doesn’t mean other studios won’t.I half wonder if this might be all that’s left of their prior stabs at making one.

  • thepowell2099-av says:

so basically it’s a Who Framed Roger Rabbit stealth sequel.Cloverfield 5 confirmed.

  • recognitions-av says:

This made me feel emotions that I have no words to describe
