While this won’t necessarily be the most thrilling of weekend box office updates, we can at least assure you that there will be at least one new development that you can look forward to. No, it will not involve the No. 1 spot, as that space still firmly belongs to Peter Parker and his classmates. To nobody’s surprise, Spider-Man: Far From Home remained a few steps ahead of its competition despite the customary 51% decline in homegrown revenue, roping in another $45.3 million domestically and reaching $847.1 million globally. There’s nothing new to report with the runner-up this weekend, either: Toy Story 4 continues to trail its webbed counterpart, adding another $20.6 million to its domestic gross.

The shake-up comes at the hands of Paramount’s Crawl and 20th Century Fox’s Stuber as two major studios tried their damnedest to provide viable counterprogramming. Earning modest opening week hauls of $12 million and $8.04 million, respectively, both films amount to notable blows for two major studios (and while our very own A.A. Dowd wasn’t the biggest fan of Stuber, he was relatively content with Crawl, declaring it a perfectly serviceable B-movie). Rounding out the fifth spot is Yesterday, proving that there is still an audience for those willing to entertain both a world without the Beatles and a marginally interesting love story.

One fascinating note: A24's The Farewell had a pretty amazing limited release for an indie film. Opening in just four theaters in New York and Los Angeles, the Awkwafina-led stand-out garnered over $351,000 with an $87,833-per-theater average. That’s the best per-theater average this year for any film to date.

There was another interesting takeaway from this weekend’s somewhat predictable box office: It took the efforts of two major studios to finally knock Aladdin out of the Top 5 spot for the first time in eight weeks, a development that arrives just in time for Disney’s next live(ish) action attempt, The Lion King. Considering the film’s very mixed reviews, it’ll be interesting to see if that has any impact on public interest. We think nostalgia will likely win, though. It is the circle of cinematic life, after all.

Gotta say that FFH was a pretty damn good Spidy flick.  They did a really good job with Mysterio.
Saw Toy Story 4 before it(yay drive in double feature!) and that wasn’t half bad either.

I was incredibly impressed with Toy Story 4 and FFH. Toy Story 4 just seemed to gel together really well, I liked all the characters, and the absence of a real villain just felt nicer. Meanwhile, the villain was what brought FFH together for me. Gyllenhaal was a perfect Mysterio, and while I understand people being worried about Spider-Man becoming a replacement Iron Man, Holland is my favorite Spidey just because he feels like a real teenager.

Toy Story 4 was fine, but it never shook off the “this is unnecessary” feeling after 3. Not helping was that Forky basically stopped contributing to the plot and being a decent character after Woody finds the antique store while the movie changes gears to focus on Bo Peep. IMO, the best scene in the movie occurred near the beginning, where Woody was in the kindergarten and grabbed the supplies to make Forky for Bonnie.Far From Home was great. Not sure if I like it more than Homecoming, and the first half felt like it had a ton of cut scenes, but it was a real fun time overall. I was a little annoyed with how Fury and Hill were written in this movie, but the final stinger alleviated that. Speaking of which, that mid-credits stinger was pure awesome and I can’t wait to find out what happens with that.

Maybe this is just me, but did the ending of Toy Story 4 seem a bit weird? SPOILERS AHOY…Woody’s been super-loyal to his owners in all the previous films, and although he’d been relegated to “the closet,” he still seemed loyal not just to his owner but to all the friends he’s spent so much of his life with. Then at the end he leaves them all for Bo Peep. It seemed a bit like the middle-aged guy leaving his responsibilities and obligations behind to run away with the hot babe “that got away.” They even made Bo more attractive that she’d been previously as if they wanted to emphasize it. It’s probably just me.

Hey, can you help me out with something here?Spiderman Spoiler BelowWhat happens to Beck at the end of the movie? I feel like I missed something. Peter and Beck are in that glass room on the bridge, and Beck tries to take manual control of the drones, his henchmen are like “No, you’re too close, you’ll get hit,” but Beck doesn’t care and ends up getting shot. Except that’s not Beck, it’s an illusion, the real Beck is standing invisible next to Peter, but Peter uses his Peter Tingle to sense Beck’s presence and punches him in the face. I’m pretty sure I got all this right. Since Beck wasn’t actually shot by the drones, why does he die at the end of the movie?

      • murrychang-av says:

Ok A: No corpse so I’m not convinced he’s dead butB: The real Beck did get shot but he moved to one side of the hallway and the illusion Beck collapsed on the other side, that’s why invisiBeck was standing there to get punched. It was like 1:30am at that point but I’m pretty sure that was the deal.

      • ohsoshiny-av says:

I’ve been wondering that myself, while also lamenting that the MCU killed off another worthy villain, but now I’m not so sure he’s dead.

      • justsomerandoontheinternet-av says:

SPOILERS:He was actually shot, but in his dying moments tried to trick spidey to get the kill and it failed. Right after he got shot we watch spidey take out the remaining drones, giving Beck ample time to do his thing while we and Spidey are looking elsewhere.

      • christraeger-av says:

Pretty sure Beck does get shot, but gets up while cloaked and has a hologram showing him as he was on the ground.

  • fronzel-neekburm-av says:

Do you think the people who made Crawl are all looking at each other right now thinking “I know! We’re as surprised as you!” ?

    • galdarnit-av says:

““I know! We’re as surprised as you!””

Surprised by what? The fact that people seem to appreciate it for what it is or the fact that it made basically the exact amount of money it was predicted to make?

      • fronzel-neekburm-av says:

I mean… yes? I’m not knocking it, I enjoyed it, but it was opening without a critic’s screening against a heavily hyped buddy comedy, and got not only a good review but a good audience score.

        • dhartm2-av says:

If someone were to describe Stuber as a ‘Two hour Uber commercial starring a pro wrestler and the 4th lead from Silicon Valley’ they wouldn’t exactly be wrong. When your movie looks like a lesser version of Keanu you should lower your expectations.

  • gritsandcoffee-av says:

No thanks, I’ll stick with Netflix and the library, as well as TCM airing old Japanese films.

I do like seeing movies in the theater, but the last few movies I’ve seen we’re in theaters with cushy seats that serve beer and snacks. Which is to say, I like a theater experience modeled after my living room, not vice versa.

    • thefabuloushumanstain-av says:

check if your library gives you access to Kanopy

      • missrori-av says:

Mine doesn’t, but I am considering the service it does offer, Hoopla.  Anybody here know from that one?

        • blastprocessing-av says:

Hoopla is fine but (at my library, at least) only allows 10 items per month. I usually use it to let my daughter check out audiobooks. The app is a little crashy on her Amazon Fire. It’s free, though, so how much can I really complain?

        • paulkinsey-av says:

There’s some good stuff on Hoopla. Definitely worth using.

    • missrori-av says:

For me, it’s TCM, the library, Tubi and Pluto TV (there’s some overlap between those two), and perhaps Netflix for TV show breaks.

      • taumpytearrs-av says:

I pay for Amazon, Netflix, and Hulu, yet since I downloaded Pluto TV on my PS4 I find myself watching the 24 hour Mystery Science Theater and Rifftrax channels on Pluto more than the shit I pay for. I was watching it so often in the last few months that I think I have seen almost every movie they have in their rotation, although thankfully it seems to change occasionally.

      • cleisthenes-av says:

The cat video channel on Pluto TV is more than worth the price of admission!

    • yummsh-av says:

Good. As long as you’re out of the way in places where no one has to see or interact with you, the world is a better place.

  • thefabuloushumanstain-av says:

I really liked FFH but gotta ask…(SPOILER) considering they can just show “Quentin Beck” as who he really is by like flashing his driver’s license…and SHIELD is still going to say Spider Man isn’t just a casual murderer (in the umpteenth tired go-around of “but is the hero a mass murderer”…I’m sure it has been done ten times since Sherlock did it so incredibly terribly a while back) and that he’s still an Avenger, how ill-considered was that “surprise” ending where they also cut out the chance to ever do any secret identity/photographer stuff with Spidey ever again?  Also how poor the set-up was…because when you turn off a lot of devices you give the command “execute them all,” right? And SHIELD has his body, and EDITH bio-scanned Peter but not a guy who is on the “disgruntled employee list” at Stark Enterprises.

    • igotlickfootagain-av says:

I’m guessing that Beck got someone on his Stark team to wipe his records from the company’s database, and maybe even from any government info. (Tony probably had all sorts of backdoors that he shouldn’t have.) I also think that Peter has the right to confer Edith on anyone, even if they are on a list of dodgy employees. The video of Spider-Man “executing” people might not be enough for charges to be laid or anything, but in our hot-take world it’s more than enough for the public to mistrust them.

      • thefabuloushumanstain-av says:

Sure, just saved all of existence from Thanos, but just really loves killing people. Total sense.I’m sure somebody at Stark can get their hands on evidence of his existence outside an alternate dimension.

  • ohsoshiny-av says:

There’s a really solid throughline in FFH about fake news and how entrenched beliefs are more important to people than objective reality. It’s very current in a way that wasn’t totally obnoxious about its politics. [SPOILER] JJJ’s intro as an Alex Jones-style conspiracy blogger really drove this home.

    • igotlickfootagain-av says:

I thought that was a really clever revision of the Mysterio concept. It’s kind of a sci-fi extrapolation of the deepfake trend.

  • tttwlam-av says:

I had to attend the last Crawl screening of Sunday night (10pm) because I was dumb and didn’t buy advanced tickets for the 7:15 one, which was sold out when I showed at 7:00.

    The 10pm also sold out.

Never discount the die-hard horror fans in a low-income area.

  • it-has-a-super-flavor--it-is-super-calming-av says:

Sure, but when’s Endgame gonna become the highest grossing movie in all of space and time?!

    • jasonr77-av says:

As long as the answer isn’t “never” I could be happy…is 6.8 mil too much of a hill to climb?
