Summer is on its way, and unsurprisingly, the list of albums coming out in May is at least partially a reflection of that. A lot of these records are livelier and sunnier than their wintertime counterparts—but also compared with last year’s summer releases, many of which saw significant delays thanks to the pandemic. But as the world wakes up, thanks to mass vaccination, the soundtrack should be excellent: New music from St. Vincent, NCT Dream, Mannequin Pussy, and more. Whether you’re finishing up the school year or just getting ready to start leaving work early on Fridays now and again, it’s nice to know your ears will be ready to party, too. (And if you don’t feel like being cheery, fear not—there’s a few great metal albums on the horizon, too.)

Erstwhile Disney stars Aly and AJ Michalka have been steadily releasing effervescent pop since 2017, but haven’t put out a proper album since 2007’s Insomniac, which produced the timeless “.” Capitalizing off that song’s titanic TikTok success, the sisters have bumped up LP number four’s debut. The otherwise lengthy title aptly sums up the album’s summery vibe, with promising singles like the synth-driven “Symptom Of Your Touch” that feel effortlessly giddy and nostalgic. [Cameron Scheetz]

gross.i want a new weezer album too but we all know it’s not gonna be any good. what you need is the weezer b-side album i made like 20 years ago that i’ve always called the red album. also, the jay-z/weezer mash-up, jay-zeezer -black and blue album.

the Weezer album is out there and it’s perfectly fine. a more sanitised and radio-friendly version of Maladroit, for the fans who like those deep cuts, but it’s not a patch on OK Humanalso has this St. Vincent album had the worst rollout of all time? it’s gotta be up there, right? every single piece of PR I read for it makes me drastically less inclined to even listen, and I’ve been a fan since Strange Mercy

I’ve been a long time St. Vincent fan, too, so I’m not sure why I’m not feeling it yet for her new album. I’ve always liked her reinventions, but this time it feels really contrived. Maybe I’ll get more into it when I hear the full album.

I’m also waiting to hear the whole album before making any judgments but I will say that Pay Your Way In Pain didn’t exactly wow me.

I feel the exact same way.

I feel 1960s-1970s NYC is soooo overplayed in media and culture that its just not very interesting, and especially for an artist of her caliber.

        • croig2-av says:

I’m very interested in that era, and the artists/music she’s homaging here. But as opposed to her last rollouts, what I’ve seen so far seems so surface level, more like cosplay.

I arched an eyebrow at the masseduction rollout; I liked the music, but I really wasn’t excited by the popstar pastiche/reinvention. I’m the type who typically really goes for musicians who roll out a new look or backstory for each album, but I find hers increasingly exhausting.

It’s genuinely depressing. I think she’s just way too close to the subject matter to understand why people are reacting to it when really it should have been expected.

    • thomasjsfld-av says:

yeah I can’t believe that even this lil write up didn’t mention anything about St. Vincent’s egomaniacal behavior towards the journo interviewing her, let alone the atrocious roll out.

      • anotherburnersorry-av says:

It’s really weird that St Vincent got a pass on that–did AVC even do a newswire about it? If Justin Bieber spiked a journalist’s interview it’d be headlines here for weeks.

    • jomahuan-av says:

i was curious, since i’m not a ‘long-time’ fan – has it always been like this? like, a new persona for a new album?
(i started listening around the eponymous album)

      • croig2-av says:

The last three since 2014’s self titled have had a new look/persona that was more pronounced than just the regular differences in look/theme that occur naturally from the passage of time. For self titled she had that striking grey spiked hair and sang about tech/identity, for Masseduction she wore that skin tight suit and the PR/theme was more about sexuality/commodity, and now she’s got this 70’s thing going.

I had no idea there was a new Mdou Moctar album coming out which is excellent news! I was shocked to see they’ve apparently signed with Matador which seems like an odd fit.

Just follow him on Bandcamp. He’s been sending out daily reminders about the new album for months. It’s been kind of annoying.
