It’s like we always say: Never underestimate the power of My Chemical Romance fans with disposable income. Variety reports that the band’s long-anticipated North American reunion tour has already sold out, less than a day after tickets first went on sale. That’s equal to something on the order of 228,600 tickets sold in a mere six hours, a.k.a. enough people to fill 4,536 Hot Topic stores. (Assuming a maximum occupancy of 50 people, which actually seems optimistic, given how many Funko Pops tend to be strewn around those places in inconvenient spots.)

Anyway: The reunited band members issued a quick statement today, thanking their fans for their continued enthusiasm. They also added a few more shows to the tour, in the hopes that more constituents of the Black Parade might be able to complete their pop-punk pilgrimage.

My Chemical Romance broke up back in 2013, with the group’s various members separating in order to pursue other musical projects, and, in one case, a shockingly lucrative comic book career. The group first got back together late last year, for another predictably, massively successful show.

Welcome to the In the Black Parade. Because…profit…I guess. Most Emo music of the 2000’s has not held up well, I think MCR’s does. Usually when these types of bands go on a reunion tour they play free concert nights at a park in Albany. Most of people who show up are just teens who have a decent shot at getting beer without being carded. This is a legit stadium tour. Hope it goes well.

It’s amazing what AI can do these days. And I am 99.999% sure that 99.999% of tickets sold were grabbed by algorithms for third parties to scalp. The concert industry is so rotten it makes real estate frauds like Trump look slick, honest, and competent in comparison.

You are not wrong. Within an hour, anything under $400 was sold out, and anything that was listed under $100 was on resale for $300. It was wild.

Part of this is also Ticketmaster’s absurd “Platinum Tickets” which are just normal tickets with prices that raise dynamically based on demand. The same $50 tickets shot up to $200 within a couple minutes.

The second hand ticket market is nothing but legalized scalping. When I was growing up in NY state, the law was you could not sell a ticket for more than 10% over face value or you were guilty of scalping.

i would love to see what % of initial ticket sales actually go to those who purchased them for any given concert. obviously scalping is a giant part, but even fans don’t know what kind of october they’re going to be having when the show actually comes up.

If I could have one wish come true, it would be to have the word “welp” permanently banished from the public discourse, consigned to the bin of “Words and Phrases Thou Shalt Be Pilloried And Shunned By Respectable Society If You Use”, along with “bae” or “moist” or “on a go-forward basis”.

Possibly they should have just gone ahead and booked stadia instead of arenas.
