Wes Anderson’s long awaited and star stuffed film, The French Dispatch, officially premieres at the 74th Cannes Film Festival, and hits theaters October 22. This comes after many delays for the film due to the pandemic, with the original premiere initially set last fall with a wide release aimed for the summer. This is Anderson’s second film to premiere at Cannes, following his 2012 film Moonrise Kingdom. The French Dispatch stars Benicio Del Toro, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, Jeffrey Wright, Adrien Brody, Owen Wilson, Timothée Chalamet, Stephen Park, Bill Murray, Liev Schreiber, Elizabeth Moss, Edward Norton, Saoirse Ronan, Christoph Waltz, Anjelica Huston, Willem Dafoe, and so many more.

Shot in Augouleme, France, the film is set at an outpost of an American magazine called The French Dispatch, and “brings to life a collection of stories from the final issue of an American magazine published in a fictional 20th-century French city.” In typical Anderson mise-en-scène, the setting is delicate and meticulously detailed against a color palettes oh-so-appealing to the eye. With offbeat humor and plenty of character quirks, The French Dispatch looks like it will snuggle right up next to Anderson other successes such as The Grand Budapest Hotel, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and The Royal Tenenbaums.

“Christoph Waltz Anjelica Huston”I didn’t know they melded. How many heads and legs we talkin’?

I’m trying to think of films that approach this caliber and depth of cast. I can’t come up with one. Not an Ocean’s or a Marvel. Not even an Altman or an Allen. There are several more known actors and even more “that guys” on top of those listed above.

He attracts good actors like Woody Allen, and somehow manages to not be a rapist while he does it!

      Knives Out, maybe?

I thought of that but it’s not really close if you were to rank them somehow. This is subjective but I think only a couple of the Knives Out cast even cracks the top 10 of this cast, which goes to 20 or so known actors.

Now I desperately want Dave Bautista in a Wes Anderson movie!(this is in no way a joke)

    “Lieve Schreiber”

You’ve got an extra ‘e’ there.

As much as I’m fiending to see the next wave of Marvel movies on the big screen, I find myself having to admit that I just might be more excited about seeing this movie. I loves me some Wes Anderson.

I hear that Wes Anderson spent the entire last year tweeing it up. The French Dispatch will be his twee-est film yet! Just thinking about it corduroyed my pants!

    • homelesnessman-av says:

He used his new twee-screen technology to digitally twee it up in post. All those berets? TweeGI!

  • emchammered-av says:

Of all of Wes Anderson’s films, this looks like it may be the Wes Andersoniest.

I would love for Wes Anderson to go outside his bounds a bit. I thought Grand Budapest Hotel was going to be a murder mystery (in retrospect, no idea why) and honestly, I would still love to see his take on a whodunnit. I would also pay to see the full length film version of the SNL parody commercial where they do an Anderson horror movie (The Coterie of Midnight Intruders).

Honestly this is one of those films I’ve decided up-front that I’ll love. The dialogue could literally be “rhubarb rhubarb rhubarb” and I’ll probably lap it up for the furniture alone.

I thought I had come around on Anderson when I finally watched, and loved, Bottle Rocket a few weeks ago. But this trailer just irritates me again. Frances McDormand here just reminds me that I’d rather rewatch any Coen movie.

I GENERALLY ENJOY WES ANDERSON, BUT THIS TRAILER IS LEAVING ME COLD FOR SOME REASON. I CANNOT QUITE PUT MY FINGER ON WHY.

  • bio-wd-av says:

Thats the forth delay right?  Damn it Wes, your as obsessive with getting a date right as I am with watching the bloody thing.

  • donotbotherme-av says:

this will either be the best film of the year or the worst. No middle ground. 50/50 shot either way.
