Tonight’s Golden Globes were a decidedly non-traditional affair, owing, ostensibly, to the realities of the COVID-19 pandemic—and more realistically to the huge amounts of criticism the event, and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association that operates it, have come under in recent years. (Even the group’s damage control efforts, launched after it was reported that zero of the 87 people who voted on the Globes every year were people of color, were derided as too slow and out of touch.)

Whatever the reason: The Globes ran tonight as a private event, without any press, red carpet, or even a livestream to allow regular folks to check in online. Instead, reports of tonight’s winners arrived via the Globes’ Twitter account—which, while a bit on the chintzy side, does have the benefit of skipping a bunch of tedious speechifying.

The end results, at least, were largely encouraging, even if there was some of the category weirdness that always marks this event. (Who in their right mind submits Sarah Snook as a supporting actress on Succession?) Jane Campion’s The Power Of The Dog was probably the biggest winner of the night, capturing honors for Best Drama, Best Director for Campion, and Best Supporting Actor for Kodi Smit-McPhee.

Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story also got more attention here than it got at the box office, winning its category for Best Picture, and with two of the musical’s stars, Ariana DeBose and Rachel Zegler, taking home acting statues.

Over in TV, meanwhile, Succession cleaned up; in addition to Snook, Jeremy Strong got the win for Best Actor In A Drama Series, and the show won for Best Drama overall.

We were also happy to see Hacks get some attention, winning for Best Musical Or Comedy, and adding another well-earned statue to Jean Smart’s shelf for Best Actress. (See also: Michaela Jaé Rodriguez’s win for Pose.)

In other categories, Disney beat itself to score a win for Encanto, O Yeong-Su (who played the elderly 001 in Squid Game) got a win, and, yes: Nicole Kidman has now officially been rewarded for her very weird, very committed performance as Lucille Ball in Being The Ricardos.

    Faaaarrrrrrrrrttt…ttt?

In a very stacked Best Actress race this year, Nicole Kidman was nominated and won for Being The Ricardos? She’s one of our great working actors, but there were a lot  more deserving women this year, while her performance as Lucille Ball was good but nothing special, and marred by a terrible makeup job.

I think you could argue the biggest problem with a stacked category is the likelihood of a split vote. You can’t underestimate how much Hollywood likes movies about Hollywood, but I do think there was enough competition in the category to cancel one another out. The accessibility of the film might have helped as well. Sure is easy to watch it on Amazon Prime.

I think it’s been an open secret – at least since Pia Zadora was awarded “Best New Star of the Year” for Butterfly – that no one “wins” a Golden Globe.

Extra points for playing a known historical figure—especially one in Hollywood—and differences from one’s normal persona/dramatic changes to appearance have been known to increase one’s Best Actor/Actress odds for a while. To be fair, “dramatic changes to appearance” is highly debatable here…

Kidman is good in  the movie. But blaming the ‘makeup’ for her face looking weird is being very diplomatic.

    • ohnoray-av says:

agreed, she was the only good part of Being The Ricardos, that movie barely worked and when it did work, it was because of Kidman. But definitely some better performances out there this year.

At no time did this show ever cross the believability line for me. I never got the feeling I was watching anything other than actors “playing at” being those people. I guess knew what I was getting into with Sorkin writing it, but I had hopes based on the cast. Out of Kidman, Bardem, Simmons, and Arianda, Kidman was the weakest, IMO.

She won an award because she’s Nicole Kidman. If she managed to hide her accent the whole time they would have given her two awards.

  • bassplayerconvention-av says:

Wait, only 87 people voted for the awards this (and apparently every) year? That seems like way too small a sample size. (Just aside from all the other issues.)

Would have been useful to see who (or what) the winners were up against. Couldn’t have hurt to post the list of nominees or added a link somewhere in the article.

You win an Oscar, you buy a Golden Globe.

I’d say I don’t want to be that guy, but in this case I do… Seriously, a trans actor of colour wins a TV Best Actress award and you relegate a mention of it to parentheses? This is such wonderful news. MJ was always the heart of Pose. Great to see her recognised. Her picture should be in the header image.

  • killa-k-av says:

They shouldn’t have given Jeremy Strong a Golden Globe. It’s gonna’ go right to his head.

  • ohnoray-av says:

Power of the Dog was definitely one of those movies that remind you how grand and engrossing films can be. Awards for everyone involved in it.

  • gargsy-av says:

“(Who in their right mind submits Sarah Snook as a supporting actress on Succession?)“

Maybe it was someone who has seen the show and recognizes that Logan and Kendall are the main characters and everyone else is supporting?

Not certain, just spit-balling based on common sense and having seen the show.

happy garfield got a statue for tick tick boom. absolute tour de force.

Oscar nominations come out in about a month. This year will be almost as weird as last year.

  • tboa-av says:

Whew at long last, we can finally get these prestigious results. I was worried AVClub would leave this IMPORTANT ceremony out of their coverage after telling us that it’s racist and pointless and these awards are just bought and paid for. Glad AVClub came to senses and made sure that none of that matters and these awards should still be covered as if they were real accomplishments./s

I thought that was Jeffrey Tambor for a moment.

Wow. That Raiders/Chargers game was excellent.

I wish I understood the love for West Side Story. It was a good movie version of a great musical, but it really didn’t bring anything new to the table. I expected more from Spielberg. Its nice that Latinx actors are playing Puerto Ricans, but other than that, I don’t see anything that was any better than the original. I though that both In the Heights and Tick Tick Boom were better movies, although I’ll never really forgive TTB for cutting my favorite song.

  • colonel9000-av says:

Power of the Dog sucks. Jane Champion is very talented, but the story here was a big fart, a short story of ideas stretched to an interminable length, with a lame ending that just makes you feel shitty. Power of the Dog makes the Master seem upbeat and exciting, I’d rather handle a poisoned rope than watch it again.

Has anyone seen West Side Story?
