Which actors will win, and which should win, at the 2021 Emmys?

For every seeming foregone conclusion, there are a lot of tough calls in this year’s acting categories

On Sunday, September 19, the nominees for the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards (and their limited number of guests) will gather in person once more to fête each other, albeit six feet or so apart. There are some races here that feel like a foregone conclusion—Ted Lasso, WandaVision, and The Queen’s Gambit entered this competition with a groundswell of support, and have already netted multiple wins. But is Jason Sudeikis a lock for Outstanding Actor In A Comedy? Will Kathryn Hahn cast a spell on voters? Or will some of the year’s quietly great performers knock them out of the running? Here, TV editor Danette Chavez takes her best shot at predicting the winners of the acting awards. Be sure to tune in Sunday night for our liveblog and news coverage, starting at 7:30 p.m. ET.

    This list is seriously lacking in Reservation Dogs.  I challege anyone to put up an episode of any show that matched the acting in Hunting.

    Prolly not me. I never get nominated…::re-reads list::…wait…WAIT! I’M Thomas Brodie-Sangster! SHIT! I need a suit!

    As I said when the nominations came out, Lead Actress in a Limited Series is B-A-N-A-N-A-S. That being said, I will be surprised if Winslet doesn’t cop it.

    Were ballots out long enough post-Michael K. Williams’ death for voters to choose him?

      Even if they weren’t, I still think he’d get it. The Handmaid’s Tale lot
      is probably going to split votes, Perry Mason’s just happy to be here, I
      highly doubt it’ll go to This is Us, and The Crown didn’t give Tobias Menzies much to work with (a shame as he’s top notch). Really, I think Giancarlo Esposito
      is the one to beat: both he and Michael K. Williams’s nominations are
      equal parts for their work they’ve done now as well as an overlooked
      role they played in the past. However, I think the only awards
      Mandalorian’s gonna get this year are technical ones.

      No – voting ended on 30 Aug, a few days before his death. I’m not sure how accurate it is but Deadline said he was already a frontrunner in their obituary. Fingers crossed he gets it – it’ll be amazing and fitting if he did and it’ll be nice to know he got it purely on merits.

    “In any case, [Jean Smart]’s got two Emmy wins under her belt already…”Three: two for ‘Frasier’ and one for ‘Samantha Who’

    Requisite grumbling about Hamilton here. You had your fucking time, Hamilton, move along.

    You’ve got Jurnee listed for Handmaid’s Tale not Lovecraft Country.
