Pop artist Ariana Grande might be enduring quarantine in a gazillion dollar castle somewhere, but she’s still doing all the same shit we are, from snapping thirst traps to Facetiming with friends to binging the dumbest, most escapist movies she can. Grande’s love for film was front and center in her video for “Thank U, Next,” though that clip apparently excluded one of her all-timers: The Waterboy, Adam Sandler’s 1998 comedy about a deep-fried football prodigy.

On Sunday night, the singer shared a video to her Instagram in which she lip-syncs a scene as Sandler’s Bobby Boucher while wearing her best approximation of the character’s audacious formalwear. Joining her are some co-stars from her acting days: Victorious’ Liz Gillies and Aaron Simon Gross, who starred in Broadway’s 13: The Musical with Grande, play a pair of flirtatious groupies, tripping up Grande’s Boucher with some aggressive come-ons. (Click to the second slide for the video.)

Followers of Grande online might be familiar with her love for the Sandler vehicle. “Am I the only person who cries when watching Water Boy?” she tweeted out in 2011. “Adam Sandler just makes me cry I feel so badly for him in this movie , i ♥ him!”

And in 2018 she confused some music journalists after sharing a photo of Sandler’s Boucher on Instagram. After one posited that the “9" on Boucher’s jersey was in some way related to the release of Thank U, Next, she replied, “bruh i jus like waterboy.” As Sigmund Freud so famously said, “Sometimes a screenshot of The Waterboy is just a screenshot of The Waterboy.”

It must be neat, then, that Sandler himself would drop into the comments with some kind words. “Bobby Boucher approves of this message,” he wrote on Monday afternoon.

So, when’s she going to tell us what she thought of Uncut Gems?

well, she certainly has a type.

Yeah I was going to say this explains her and Pete Davidson.

      • dinoironbodya-av says:

I think of Pete as Sandler version 4, 2 and 3 being Jimmy Fallon and Andy Samberg.

          Pitch-perfect description

mostly agree, when fallon laughed mid sketch it was annoying (because he did it every sketch), but when sandler did it, it was because farley or some other legend did something remarkable and his breaking character was understandable.

Okay I’m getting roasted by Sandler fans on Reddit as we speak for saying he has lovable douchebag energy, am I nuts here? He’s always come across as a douchebag with a heart of gold for me, someone whose anger and enjoyment of playing up obnoxiousness is tempered by a fundamental sweetness that makes you like him anyway, and folks are acting like I’m calling him the devil, Kathy Bates style. If I’m wrong, tell me, I’d rather hear it from y’all than the oddly vocal group of SandmanStans.

    • nickgee-av says:

I have definitely thought something similar but you articulated it much better than I would have.

    • Fleur-de-lit-av says:

That perfectly describes him in Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore.  He’s not _always_ a douchebag with a heart of gold, though.  ‘Stunted man-child’ applies more broadly, I think.

Sandler is charming but lazy. Everything you need to know about his career can be summarized in those two words.

    • brickstarter-av says:

I think the actual term is “loveable slob”.

he’ll ask you to buy an extra yankee ticketand then he won’t show

you’re wrong and now you’ve put me in a tough position of having to dissect and argue about the script and characters in an adam sandler movie, which itself sounds like the premise for a scrapped SNL skit.you either aren’t aware that there’s a difference between ‘obnoxious’ and ‘douchebag’ OR……….actually that’s most of your problem.  i know you think you KNOW what those words mean but how about you type them into google. literally the entire plot of the waterboy was about he was treated like shit because he wasn’t a douchebag.

      • jhelterskelter-av says:

I’m not talking about Waterboy I’m talking about Sandler himself. We agree that Bobby is not a douchebag at all.

        • annihilatrix--av says:

the guy who drags his regular buddies into a ton of movies and still makes movies starring his famous buddies? i can’t even think of a sandler movie made in the last 20 years i’d voluntarily watch, but i’m telling you you’ll have a hard time finding people that share that opinion. you’re the one complaining about why you were so briskly jumped on for calling him a douchebag and i’m trying to explain why. i respect your opinion regardless because many of the people i hold dear also hate adam sandler: my mom, aunts, uncles, teachers, electricians, you know, respectable-like old people.

          • jhelterskelter-av says:

Fine, no worries, you disagree, you just seemed to be misinterpreting my point given your defense of the character instead of the actor.

    • alecthar01-av says:

Weirdly I think you’re being too charitable.  I just think he’s a douchebag.

  • thekinjacaffeinespider-av says:

I had to look up “thirst trap” so I guess I learned something today.

    • kingkongbundythewrestler-av says:

I’d dare say you learned something and lost something at the same time.

I had never heard the term before either. I assumed it was a cruel practical joke where you leave some delicious Rold Gold pretzels out on the counter for some unsuspecting person, and you hide all the liquid refreshments and shut off the water to the house, and bolt the doors from the outside. Halfway through the bowl of pretzels, they start looking for something to drink, and there’s nothing in the fridge. They go to the tap, no water. They try to leave, and the doors are bolted shut.  Then they realize: “Oh no, it’s a thirst trap!”

Fun Fact: Ariana Grande was five when The Waterboy came out.Fun Fact: Just typing that, I aged twenty years.

  • newhack1-av says:

damn he should try and fuck her!

I need to break up with AV club, I’m bored (I mean “Ariana likes a movie!” – ugh! Thank you AV Club, but … Next!”)

  • igotlickfootagain-av says:

Ms Grande, if you have any opinions on the size of Sandler’s dick energy, please, keep them to yourself.

  • galacticyoyoagain-av says:

Honestly, it’s not that surprising. The Waterboy was huge with the kids in my middle school and is definitely big with younger millennials that don’t have super refined taste.
