Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O provided the theme song for Rise Of The Tomb Raider

Aux Features Games

The forthcoming Rise Of The Tomb Raider will reportedly tell (more of) the story of how Lara Croft got to plundering and killing. The latest trailer for the game, which will be available for Xbox 360 and Xbox One next month, makes the trip to Siberia—where “it all started,” which we guess is all the slaughtering—set to a haunting tune from Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the singer says was approached by Microsoft to help provide the soundtrack to Croft’s rise from daughter of a crackpot to well, Tomb Raider.

Karen O told Rolling Stone that while she’s not much of a gamer—the 3D model throws her—she used to cheer her brother on and share in his defeats when he played video games as a kid. Despite her lack of familiarity, the singer says she was inspired by the games’ themes— the “transformation and survival and realizing one’s own destiny and pushing past one’s own limits” recall what she’s experienced recently as a new mother. Karen O says she also drew from hymns to write the defiant theme song, “I Shall Rise,” which she calls her “I Will Survive” melody. The full version of the song will be available on Friday, but you can catch an earful in the trailer.
