Zac Efron is a grinning Ted Bundy in first Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile trailer

Aux Features Coming Distractions

Yesterday, Netflix dropped Conversations With A Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes, a four-part docuseries on the serial killer from Joe Berlinger. This coming week, Berlinger will premiere another Bundy project, this one a feature film starring Zac Efron in the actor’s most daring role yet. Called Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, the film has dropped its first trailer ahead of its Sundance premiere.

Beginning in 1969, the film views Bundy’s crimes, arrest, and trial through the lens of his longtime girlfriend, Elizabeth Kloepfer (Lily Collins), who struggled with the question of Bundy’s innocence even after reporting her early suspicions to police. Per the trailer, the film will also explore the media circus that erupted in tandem with Bundy’s 1979 trial, which saw the killer, serving as his own attorney, use his good looks and political savvy—a fierce Republican, he once wanted to become a politician—to enrapture the nation.

John Malkovich, Jim Parson, Kaya Scodelario, Haley Joel Osment, and Metallica’s James Hetfield co-star in the film, which has yet to lock down a release date.

“Certainly, Your Honor, no one as handsome as my client could be a…killer.”[FARTS]“Excuse me, Your Honor.”

  • erikzimm-av says:

This trailer is terrible. Or maybe the tone of the film is completely off. But it’s trying to play itself as this quirky-Oceans 11 of serial killer movies. I just don’t think that’s going to fly with such HEAVY topic of a dude who murdered 30+ people. I think you could pull this off if you’re depicting a fictional serial killer. But this just doesn’t work. Hard pass. I’ll maybe watch this on TBS.

Zac Efron is a grinning Ted Bundy in first Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile trailerOkay, but what’s the title of the movie?

    • kukluxklam2-av says:

The title is definitely a bummer. Makes it sound like an over-the-top serial killer comedy….or a Harvey Weinstein bio pic.

      • beertown-av says:

I figured the Hollywood adaptation of Harvey Weinstein’s life would be called “Harvey! He’s the Bad One! Not Us, Him!”

        • EstebanLoco-av says:

          *Directed by Brian Singer

        • 44uglenncoco-av says:

there is a theatre play by Herman von Harten: Ich bin’s nicht, Adolf Hitler ist es gewesen (1984 – still playing 6 days a week) which roughly translates to “not I, Hitler did it” – so I guess it works but for anyone who knoes this play it would be kind of weird.

      • judgmentaldad-av says:

Sounds like a Lewis Carroll remake or something.

  • cinecraf-av says:

It would make for some interesting synergy if they brought Efron back to play Bundy in Mindhunter, as he was one of the persons interviewed by Douglass for his profile work.

    • johnnysegment-av says:

You’re probably already aware that Fincher and Tarantino have both cast Damon Herriman as Charles Manson for their respective upcoming season/film?

  • bobbobato-av says:

Oh that’s not glorifying a horrible criminal at all. That soundtrack would go perfectly with a videogame, ffs.

  • derrickdd-av says:

Efron looks shockingly good in this.

  • argiebargie-av says:

“Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile”Think about it: a team of glorified, talentless assholes got paid thousands of dollars to write this awful mess of a title. At least I don’t get paid to write idiotic comments here.As far as you know.

    • darthchimay-av says:

To be fair, the title is a quote from the judge during sentencing. So the assholes didn’t write it; they chose it.

      • argiebargie-av says:

Fair enough. But they still got paid.

        • youguesseditfrankstallone-av says:

Fair enough. But they still got paid.Well the screenwriter came up with it and not some faceless room full of yes men, so I guess it’s good you aren’t getting paid for your comments or we’d have to call you out too.

        • theincreduloushulk-av says:

So are you upset someone else has a job?

      • 44uglenncoco-av says:

it sounds a bit like count olaf from ‘a series of unfortunate events’ which inreases the feeling of “wacky adventures of a serial rape murderer” and also makes me wonder why they didn’t pick the count olaf actor for the role of that lawyer instead of the big bang boy? would have been funnier i think

    • iamafish-av says:

I kind of like the title…

    • uforb2000-av says:

We all know you’re on George Soros’ payroll.  And the Koch Bros.

    • gramercypolice-av says:

The screenwriter titled his own script in 2012. He got paid, but probably not extra thousands of dollars just for the title.
I’m sure you possess a deep understanding of the film industry, but in this case you’re simply wrong. Scott: How about the title, where did you come up with that?Michael: The title comes from one of the verdicts. I thought it was so bold and absurd given the tone of 75 percent of the script, and then it becomes less ironic and more literal as the story concludes, and that was very interesting to me.

    • cunnilingusrice--disqus-av says:

      It needs that oxford comma.

  • manwok-av says:

Weird tone for a movie about a guy who killed women and was all about that necrophilia, but otherwise looks interesting.

    • gybr-av says:

I was thinking the same.  I feel bad for victims families that have to see this happy-go-lucky version of him rake in millions of dollars.

      • vibrantgreeneyes-av says:

Ted Bundy “acted” happy go lucky thru out his whole trial Look into it watch the court proceedings yourself

    • tj-lazer-av says:

Lol right? It feels more like a Tom Cruise action flick than about a guy who had sex with dead bodies.

    • fallenorangeleaves-av says:

I mean we have enough movies and shows that seriously portray serial killers. Mindhunters, Silence of the Lambs, etc… it’s fine to do something different.

      • manwok-av says:

Oh don’t get me wrong it looks pretty entertaining. But still dude was fucking corpses and (I think) severed headed less than 40 years ago.

    • geralyn-av says:

I’m old enough to remember all of this as an adult and the tone is extremely accurate to how it all played out at the time.

      • manwok-av says:

Oh not doubting that the media portrayed him positively bc he was an atrractiveish white guy. Just the trailer seems to be portraying him positively as well which is weird to me.

        • geralyn-av says:

The media didn’t portray him positively though. They were, however, just as fascinated by Bundy as everyone else was. He was our first real experience with a serial killer, and he was good looking, charming, intelligent, and very scary. Bundy was also quite brazen, both in his murders and in his behavior after getting caught. At one point during one of his Florida trials, he legally married a supporter in the courtroom while he was questioning her on the witness stand. The two of them managed to conceive a child while he was on death row. Prior to that, he escaped custody in Colorado twice, the second time successfully. The public was both attracted to and repulsed by Bundy. Believe me the media only reflected the general attitude; they didn’t create it. The trailer is definitely reflecting the reality of the time.

      • p-i--mp-av says:

        Oh, shit. Really?

    • cuzned-av says:

To be fair, we don’t necessarily know the tone of the movie yet, just of its first trailer.

  • steveresin-av says:

That title, ugh. Herbie Goes Demented would have been better.

  • theunnumberedone-av says:

I thought the tone was a little off, but they definitely went overboard right around “Ted Bundy is about to find out… That being a serial rapist, murderer, and necrophile is harder than he thought!”

    • 44uglenncoco-av says:

      😀
“…that being a serial rapist, murderer, and father of a 2-year-old is harder than he thought”

  • xample2-av says:

So they’re going for “Ted Bundy was a hot bad boy” angle. Cool?

  • judgmentaldad-av says:

Alternate title: Bundy: The Guy Ritchie Treatment

  • brianokay-av says:

My little brother got drunk last night and read the Ted Bundy wiki, and we discovered that one of his victims shares my mom’s first and last name AND she was killed and found just outside the town we lived in for 30 years

  • kingpcgeek99-av says:

When can the term “drop” or “dropped” be removed from the lexicon? Can we go back to using proper English instead of slang and say “released”?

  • outrider-av says:

Okay, but why does he look so much like Brandon Routh in the still on the sidenav?

  • litenupfrancis-av says:

What a shitshow. An epic glam job for a fucking monster.
    Let me just share:
I live in Idaho, formerly in Utah. Bundy left a wake of terror across the entire West and Florida, probably wider than that. There are families spread around this entire region of the West, who lost daughters and have no knowledge what happened. It all happened at such a frightening rate between 1973 and 1975 that it was fucking nuts. Bundy has hinted that he killed some, then he hinted he killed them all, then he denied he killed anybody. His Such a remorseless piece of garbage.
In my hometown in Idaho, it is almost certain that Bundy killed a 12-year-old girl, who was never found again. Our attorney general found evidence in interviewing him that confirmed he did it. But officially, nothing could be confirmed since it came in Bundy’s late confessionals.
Back in the ‘80s it was Mark Harmon, now it’s Zac Efron. The sexification of Ted Bundy continues.
Fuck Hollywood for keeping this sewer show alive.

    • cr007j-av says:

It’s a trailer – it’s also clear parts of it will get pretty dark. But it’s not Hollywood’s fault that he’s so popular. That’s the media. And lest you forget, his charisma and looks is WHY he was able to get away with it. Hindsight always makes it easy to say “they were so clearly horrible” but in reality people literally questioned his guilt because he was so charming. The lesson from this is not that Ted Bundy was a good guy, it’s that we Americans are fucking morons because we’ll fall for anyone with a nice smile, good looks, and a smooth tongue.Look at fucking R Kelly or Chris Brown. People literally think they’re innocent no matter what because they can sing and dance and they’re hot (to certain people.) Be mad at the system, don’t be mad at Netflix.

      • uforb2000-av says:

Be mad at the system, don’t be mad at Netflix. Also, don’t be mad at Zach Efron. But go ahead and be pissed at Mark Harmon, because he’s Mark Harmon.

      • litenupfrancis-av says:

Not to offend here, but that’s absurd. Hollywood is part of the media. And just by blazing their Fender chords through the background, with a ripped body of ‘lil Zac, who looks about as much like Bundy as a koala looks like a crocodile, they’re just amplifying their own fictional account of what this macabre period was really like. Don’t be mad at Netflix?? They live for this shit, and they know it. Graham Hastings and their ilk can go piss up a rope.
BTW – anybody who says Ted Bundy was “handsome” is a fucking moron stuck in a John Holmes cult from the ‘70s. He was a deranged, snake-tongued, grotesque sociopath.
My rule: if it doesn’t enlighten forensics in the homicide cases, and it doesn’t reveal facts that can bring solace to the victims — let Bundy rot in that Florida grave. But hey, don’t just believe me: https://tv.avclub.com/the-most-shocking-thing-about-conversations-with-a-kill-1831936323

I’ve always thought Zac Efron was a good actor and had real talent. I think this is the movie that will really show that. I compare him to Matthew Mcconaughey who was stuck in rom-com hell for a while, but broke free.

  • buratino-av says:

what did i just saw?? This is the absolute opposite of how a Ted bundy movie should be like. Who approved this crap?

  • jeremiad-av says:

I am an unabashed lover of Zac Efron and am very much looking forward to this.

The nation was not enraptured. That’s projecting backward today’s social bubble of the internet privileged, I suspect. Plus a healthy dose of the requisite contempt for the filthy masses, maybe.

  • theclassic-av says:

It’s a golden age for true crime dramas and documentaries, which is weird since you would think when times are grim people would choose light hearted escapist fantasy rather than being dragged further into the grim.

    • Ry3380-av says:

Well there has been an awful lot of extremely popular marvel movies in the past decade, 90% of which are very light hearted escapist fantasy
