Zack Snyder’s promising a 3-hour director’s cut of critically trashed Rebel Moon

Rebel Moon currently holds the second-worst Rotten Tomatoes score of its director's career—but an even-longer version is still in the works

Zack Snyder’s latest movie, Rebel Moon, arrives in theaters this weekend, before the Netflix-produced sci-fi film migrates on to the streaming service on December 21. And critics, so far, have not been kind to Snyder’s stab at a star-faring space epic. Although the film has bounced back a bit from early reports that it was rocking a salad bar-destroying 9 percent freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes—its up to 24 percent now, as a few more “fresh” reviews have rolled in—it’s still the second-worst critical reception of his directorial career. (Thanks, Sucker Punch!)

None of which, so far, appears to have blunted Snyder’s ambition, the one quality that critics and champions alike can agree the man possesses in abundance. It’s not just that Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scargiver is already slated for release, although it is; Snyder has also made it clear that he’s already cooking up a director’s cut of the first film, A Child Of Fire, which is reportedly an hour longer than the film’s already 2-plus-hour run time. According to an interview with the Daily Express, Snyder has confirmed that the director’s cut of the first movie will be R-rated, and arrive ahead of The Scargiver; it will also focus heavily on one of the movie’s villains, Ed Skrein’s space-fascist Atticus Noble. Also, it’ll be, in Snyder’s words, “like, an hour longer and has a whole other opening that’s all Ed. It’s really crazy.”

Rebel Moon Part One stars Sofia Boutella as Kora, a young woman who rallies warriors to fight with her in a lunar rebellion against the aforementioned space fascists; Djimon Hounsou, Charlie Hunnam, Michiel Huisman, Staz Nair, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, and Cleopatra Coleman also star.

This is somehow the fault of the Hobbit Extended Editions.

  • dresstokilt-av says:

I assume that giving Zach Snyder any money at this point is yet another one of Hollywood’s ridiculous accounting practices so they can always claim a loss.

Sometimes you have to put out actual trash in order to maintain appearances.

    • Ruhemaru-av says:

      So… the Adam Sandler effect.

“I assume that giving Zach Snyder any money at this point is yet another one of Hollywood’s ridiculous accounting practices so they can always claim a loss.

Do you have fucking brain damage?

His DC movies took in more than $2 billion. Sucker Punch is basically the only thing he’s directed that didn’t rake in tons of money.

I think his movies largely suck, but I’m not a fucking moron, I understand that he makes money for people.

How, possibly, are you too stupid to understand this?

  • coolgameguy-av says:

Snyder has confirmed that the director’s cut of the first movie will be R-rated “Many fucking bothans died to bring us this information, you assholes.” *Flashes non-erect penis*

  • modsquad13-av says:

With the amount of creative freedom he clearly had in this, I think it’s safe to say: this initial version is, by definition, good director’s cut.

    • bedukay-av says:

I think the idea was one for the kids and one for the adults or kidults in this case.

    • gargsy-av says:

      No, by definition, it wasn’t.

This week the movie that Netflix wanted is coming out. In a few months, the version SNYDER wants is coming out.

By definition, you are an ignorant moron.

  • it-has-a-super-flavor--it-is-super-calming-av says:

Look, at this point you kinda know what to expect from a Zack Snyder movie, so if you see this and don’t like it then you’re at least partly to blame.
You don’t eat KFC and expect not to feel at least a bit sick afterward.

It’s based on a 9 book series, and while I’m glad two of the trilogies got adapted, it goes without saying it’s disappointing the tv series doesn’t have a proper conclusion. Especially when money gets thrown toward poorly written stuff like Rings of Power.

          • bigbudd45-av says:

poorly written is an understatement.  Rings of Power might be the most well produced and polished piece of garbage i can think of.  All the bigots complaining about black hobbits and other shit…..that stuff isnt even close to a problem area for that movie by comparison (i have issues with black hobbits so much as…where were the mixed race hobbits…group were clearly nomadic…so where do they find only other black hobbits?  I question the in universe reasoning behind these choices…i dont really care about the race of characters).

          • it-has-a-super-flavor--it-is-super-calming-av says:

I think anyone who is genuinely upset by black hobbits has too much time on their hands. That’s some green m&m with comfortable shoes adjacent rubbish.

yeah, but all that moron rage then gets channeled into preparing the next generation of brown shirts. White Supremacists have always veered more male than female.  If these rats stayed in their sub reddit or 4chan hole we could all go about not giving a shit about them….instead they are out committing hate crimes and marching on the capital.

        • thepetemurray-darlingbasinauthorithy-av says:

The Expanse is a goddamn unicorn of a show: hard science fiction space opera with actual humanity. Like, there’s actual people in it, not tropes or stereotypes or cliches.
Shit, the sciencey stuff is barely relevant to it (mostly, to be fair I suppose, because no one knows what the hell is even going on with the sciencey stuff). I loved The Expanse, except the last season was a bit of a joke – six eps, but a lot was wasted on the fan service to the book readers. Yes, I know it was based on those books, but your priority in a TV show, even if it’s an adaptation, is to make a good TV show first.

          • it-has-a-super-flavor--it-is-super-calming-av says:

They had a shortened season six due to lack of funding, and yet still managed to wrap up the main storylines decently while leaving the door open to adapt book 7 and beyond. Considering there’s then a time jump of 30 years, the show as it stands now is still reasonably complete and probably the best live-action sci-fi TV series I can think of.

          • redeyedjedi410-av says:

Season 6 was a bit of a disappointment, but that’s only because season 5 was so fucking incredible. Plus, they obviously needed a full 10-13 episode season and weren’t given that at all. I still think they managed to pull it off and it felt like a satisfying conclusion to the series. Easily my favorite sci-fi show, and possibly show, of all time. Still hoping for a sequel series at some point. Go buy the complete series if you haven’t, maybe that’ll give them the hint lol.

          • coatituesday-av says:

The Expanse is truly fine. It has what most every other s-f show doesn’t: more than one idea to it. Obviously it helps that it’s based on a well-written series, but at no time did the creators say anything like “let’s not put this part in, it’s getting complicated”.And the acting is great, and as for the effects, I just can’t believe how real everything looks. It looks so good, it’s like they could have saved money by building their own space station. And spaceships. And planets.

          • dinoironbody7-av says:

Funny thing about your previous comment is that it was an actual techbro who got the show three extra seasons.

        • roger-dale-av says:

        • nilus-av says:

I love hard intelligent Sci-Fi but I also like over-the-top schlocky and even transgressive(and super horny) Sci-Fi. The problem is Snyder just isn’t good at making that. It’s been like two decades but there was a golden age where we had both LEXX and Farscape on Sci-Fi channel and those feel far more fitting of the “adult Star Wars” tag then the edge lord crap Snyder made.

          • igotlickfootagain-av says:

Ah, ‘Farscape’, the show that dared to put horny eyebrow stroking on TV where it belongs.

          • collex-av says:

May I suggest you watch Killjoys? It’s very good shlocky, horny Canadian sci-fi show about bounty hunters. It start as a episodic space western bounty-of-the week show and gradually and seamlessly evolves into a bigger serialized esoteric space opera. It’s great.

So, why didn’t he do it in the first place? He was literally the director and…god knows why…got the do “whatever you want”-card for these movies.
Does he need his cultlike followers to pray for a “Snydercut” for every fucking movie he makes now?

    • seven-deuce-av says:

Yes, because it’s so difficult to believe he had to keep the cut under a certain amount of mins for the initial release.

    • sgt-makak-av says:

My theory is that it was planned that way from the start as a gimmick for Netflix to increase view counts. They’re betting on Synder’s fans hashtagging releasethesnydercutagain or some shit like that.

    • ofaycanyouseeme-av says:

No, it’s clear to me now that Snyder needs a second pass at every project, just to creatively break even.

      • kencerveny-av says:

It’s like a politician saying “What I meant to say…”

      • mfolwell-av says:

“Creatively break even”? His second passes often get tons of credit for being notably less bad than his first passes, but that’s a very, very low bar and they’re all still fucking awful.

        • ofaycanyouseeme-av says:

I said creatively, not qualitatively. He fulfilled his “vision” that doesn’t mean I think it’s better.

      • bigbudd45-av says:

eh.  The snyder cut of JL was fucking awful.  I actually prefer the whedon cut.  Its still a shitshow, but at least its not ridiculously bloated by comparison, and featuring more of miller’s awful rendition of flash…or more cyborg, a boring fucking character, played terribly, shot terribly, and written terribly.  So many fucking fandoms have decended into this tribalist nonsense.  I hope DC restores the snyderverse in desperation, just so it can once again be the dumpster fire it was from day one.

    • sethsez-av says:

So, why didn’t he do it in the first place? He was literally the director and…god knows why…got the do “whatever you want”-card for these movies.

Netflix wanted the big dumb sci-fi movie to have an algorithm-friendly time limit. Snyder wanted a longer cut. Releasing two versions was the compromise that allowed him to do whatever else he wanted. The movie’s probably over-stuffed jargon-filled trash like every other attempt to recreate Star Wars (and like two thirds of Star Wars itself) but Netflix making arbitrary demands because a computer told them to isn’t some unknown thing at this point.

      • badkuchikopi-av says:

It’s their algorithm though… if they want Rebel Moon to show up on everyone’s homepage that is within their power.

        • sethsez-av says:

It’s not about the movie showing up, it’s about people actually watching it. People tend to click away more often if they see a long runtime.

          • bakuretsu-av says:

Yeah, only God knows why a company would give carte blanche to someone whose films have taken in literal BILLIONS at the box office.

  • seven-deuce-av says:

The critical hatred of Snyder from is absurd.

  • ofaycanyouseeme-av says:

Now, will the director’s cut change the character Darrien Bloodaxe’s name to something less stupid or…I know, “Skywalker” is kinda dumb too, but it used in a good movie.

  • bluto-blutowski-av says:

So Snyder’s two least-liked movies are the two in which the fascists are not the heroes? His whole aesthtetic appears to appeal to very specific audience, no?

I used to think Michael Bay was the worst director, but at least he had the self awareness to know he was making high concept schlock. He always knew he was a hack, and was okay with that. Now I think Snyder is worse. Because he isn’t aware he’s a hack who makes schlock. He thinks he’s an artist. An auteur.

    • graymangames-av says:

Look, make all the schlock you want. Just have the motherfucker be a decent runtime. I haven’t watched The Batman since it came to streaming, and I liked that movie.

        • hootiehoo2-av says:

I saw that in a theater in the Village in NYC in 1996, I loved that movie so much that 27 years later I can tell you where in that theater I was sitting!

    • kped45-av says:

Bay has some entertaining movies that I don’t think are “hack” movies though. The Rock just works as an excellent 90’s action movie….and uh…he made some good music videos. I’m not sure what Snyder has going for him to be honest.

      • gargsy-av says:

“I’m not sure what Snyder has going for him to be honest.”

His Dawn of the Dead remake is better in every way than anything Bay has done.

      • mfolwell-av says:

The Rock is as badly directed as every other Bay film though. It works as much as it does largely on the strength of the innate screen presence of Connery and Cage.Go back and rewatch the car chase. It’s total nonsense. There’s a bunch of shots of cars going fast intercut with a bunch of shots of cars crashing into things, and so rarely are multiple shots strung together in a sequence that tells a story, that I can only assume the times it does happen are accidental. It’s Bay’s style in a nutshell: if you cut fast enough between a bunch of kinetic beats and put a rousing fast-paced music cue over it, then a disregard for basic continuity isn’t a problem — a big chunk of the audience will eat that shit up and ask for more.
