Here’s a quick little dose of star-studded action spectacular fun: An all-women, shockingly star-studded take on that first-person stunt-person brawl that went around on social media last week. Organized by Hollywood stuntwoman supreme Zoë Bell, the video follows the same format as the original—each participant pretends to get hit, then launches an attack at their next “opponent”—except with the caveat of featuring some of the most bankable female action stars in recent memory.

Things get off to a good start as Bell hands the ball off to Lucy Lawless, who gives a fist full of chakram to stuntwoman Tara Macken, who hits Drew Barrymore, who strikes back at Juliette Lewis, etc. The full video is a little more than 5 minutes in length, and features both some great stunts, and performances from everybody ranging from Scarlett Johansson, to Halle Berry, to Margot Robbie, to Rosie Perez, to Daryl Hannah, to Florence Pugh—who handily wins the day by being extra choosy about her improvised weapon of choice.

Everyone involved is clearly having a blast showing off their stuntwork chops and creative ideas; the end result is a little bit like a high-impact game of telephone, except with way more brutal elbow drops.

Man, porn is starting to get really weird.

Now THAT is a great job. Thanks, internet!

I’m just glad Julia Butters got the worst beating out of them all. She deserved it.Daryl Hannah showing up in character as Elle Driver is probably the coolest thing I’ve seen all week.

  • martianlaw-av says:

I see they learned their lesson from the Imagine video. It’s okay to show stars quarantining in their mansions as long as they get punched in the face. 😉

This is like a female version of The Expendables. Why don’t we have already a female version of The Expendables?

    • perfectengine-av says:

And divert attention from the cinematic brilliance that are the next six planned sequels and spin-offs to ‘The Fast & The Furious’? Surely you jest. I love that there were two references to ‘Death Proof’ in this clip, and three of the actors from it, as well. ‘I’m okay!’ Zoe is awesome.

      • ijohng00-av says:

there’s only 3 films planned from the Fast Furious universe, one being a spin off sequel. From Fast 5 onwards, the films are hollywood classics.

      • igotlickfootagain-av says:

Ever since they added Helen Mirren to the ‘F&F’ franchise, I’ve actually wanted a spin-off with her and a bunch of other older lady actors doing the usual Fast and Furious things. You can throw in Judi Dench, Nichelle Nichols, Michelle Yeoh, Betty White, Rita Moreno … the possibilities are endless.

    • bio-wd-av says:

Yeah why can’t women have some gloriously dumb but fun series of movies with famous action stars?

    • systemmastert-av says:

It’s in Development Hell and it’s called The Expendabelles.

      • perfectengine-av says:

I hope some executives end up in a guillotine if it ever does come out and is actually called The Expendabelles.

        • systemmastert-av says:

If it was gonna happen, it would have happened a while ago.  That project’s been languishing in devhell for at least 6 years.  I assume because every actor kept saying no.

They are women in Hollywood, their entire careers are marked by being Expendable

In addition to the other answers, there’s also Mercenaries, which doesn’t look like it’s very good

Damn, that was freakin awesome! The guy’s version was pretty and I have some “amateur” versions and they were OK but this one took it to another level. Is it warm in here? It suddenly got warm in here. I need a cold shower.

    • perfectengine-av says:

They’re all freaking stunning (Halle Berry STILL got it like that), but I actually just made myself stop and look up how old Florence Pugh is. Whew.

      • drpumernickelesq-av says:

When I first saw Fighting With My Family (my introduction to Florence Pugh), the biggest suspension of disbelief was every time they hinted at her not being attractive enough.

        • perfectengine-av says:

I just watched it last night (first thing I’ve seen her in, too, and now I can’t wait to see ‘Black Widow’), and holy crap, yeah, you’re totally right. Ridiculous. I had the same issue with ‘Ready Player One’. Ooh, I have a two-inch birthmark! I’m hideous! My main beef with the movie was the ending. The whole movie sets the stage for wrestling just being a choreographed dance of predetermined moves, but yet at the end, it turns into ‘Rocky’ and she ACTUALLY has to go out there and fight for the championship or whatever. So which one is it? Is it all planned out or not?

        • ruefulcountenance-av says:

Yeah, she looks nothing like Paige , the wrestler she’s portraying, who herself is an attractive girl, but in a more divisive way to Florence Pugh, I guess. So it might have been a genuine concern for her, but certainly not for the actress playing her.Florence Pugh seems to have burst on the scene almost fully formed a couple of years ago. I’ve already seen her star in Lady MacBeth, Fighting With My Family, Little Women, Midsommar as well as The Little Drummer Girl on TV. I would have seen her in Black Widow, as well, if it hadn’t been delayed. That’s a quality CV for a 24 year old.

Weaponised puzzle pieces kill more than just time.

    • brontosaurian-av says:

Is it strange that those 2 clips made me tense thinking about them losing a piece? I don’t even do puzzles, but the idea of being almost done and having 1 single piece missing is now making me tense again.

  • westcoastwestcoast-av says:

Is there a link to this thing, or are we just supposed to imagine it based on the description in the article?

Nevermind. My adblocker blocks inline Instagram.

  • kyle5445-av says:

Can’t wait for the A.V. Club to do a whole piece on Scarlett Johansson’s performance in this as well.

    • adamdubya-av says:

yeah super horrible to get movie recommendations while locked inside for 3 months during a pandemic

    • brontosaurian-av says:

I’m really hoping they branch off of that and do an excessive amount of articles just on Colin Jost. It’ll be as interesting as watching mayonnaise mold over.

  • evanwaters-av says:

Zoë! So glad she’s the one to set this off. And Lucy Lawless being the first recipient (and calling her “Zo-Zo”) is also a good touch. Very fun.

    • pearlnyx-av says:

“I’m okay!” Brought me back to the old Xena blooper reels when Zoe would get thrown from a horse, pop right back up with, “I’m okay!” and jump right back onto Tilly.

      • evanwaters-av says:

Wait, THAT’S where that moment in Death Proof comes from. Brilliant.

        • pearlnyx-av says:

I tried to find it on youtube to post for you, but all of the bloopers people have uploaded are just the main cast. I have it somewhere on VHS from the old Xena fan club boxes. There was also an interview with Lucy Lawless where she was talking about Zoe and how she’d take a bad fall and just pop up and say, “I’m okay!”But that moment in Death Proof was golden. my sister and I laughed so hard the first time we saw it.

          • evanwaters-av says:

It’s legit one of my favorite moments in a movie, to me it totally justifies all the movie’s slow buildup. They really make you fear for her life but when she pops up it’s absolutely joyful.

  • ruefulcountenance-av says:

I’m a Simple kinda Man, I very much enjoy Julia Butters’ elbow pads.

  • theunnumberedone-av says:

And of course we get the best gag from Florence Pugh. Truly our May Queen.

  • igotlickfootagain-av says:

Okay, that was fantastic, but I won’t lie: I would have loved to see Lucy Liu in the mix there.

    • sosgemini-av says:

I love that it looks like they made an effort to be inclusive. Unlike, you know, Hollywood. All that was missing was a trans-female actor. Jamie Clayton would have fit right in.

  • slander-av says:

    This was so fun.
