When it came to training for her role as Selina Kyle a.k.a. Catwoman in the upcoming Robert Pattinson-led The Batman, Zoë Kravitz decided to really get into the mind of a cat.

In an interview with Empire, the actor shares that she and her stunt coordinator Rob Alonzo watched videos of fighting felines while working on the action sequences.

“We watched cats and lions and how they fight,” Kravitz says, “and we talked about what is actually possible when you’re my size, and Batman’s so much stronger than me. What is my skill? It’s being fast and tricky. So we did some really interesting floor work that incorporated different kinds of martial arts and capoeira and a kind of feline, dance-like movement.”

Those cats may be fast as lightning, but Kravitz it’s not just about the look when it comes to the action scenes and stunt choreography. It’s also about giving more insight into the emotional standing of both her and co-star Pattinson’s characters.

“[Alonzo]’s not just trying to do a bunch of impressive backflips that wouldn’t be possible for that person to do, and he takes into account where we are in the story and where the characters are emotionally,” Kravitz explains. “So it was really fun to work from that place.”

For Kravitz, she sees the forthcoming The Batman as Catwoman’s origin story, tapping into the motivation of her actions and the role survival plays for the young woman.

“This is an origin story of Selina,” she says. “So it’s the beginning of her figuring out who she is, beyond just someone trying to survive. I think there’s a lot of space to grow and I think we are watching her become what I’m sure will be the femme fatale.”

While Kravitz looks toward big fierce cats for guidance, Pattinson reportedly found inspiration in ‘90s rock star Kurt Cobain.

“In that movie you could really feel his vulnerability and desperation, but you could also feel his power,” director Matt Reeves explains. “I thought that was a great mix. He’s also got that Kurt Cobain thing, where he looks like a rock star, but you also feel like he could be a recluse.”

The Batman arrives in theaters on March 4, 2022.

Unlike Jared Leto she’s not being a creepy asshole with her method acting. But, Selina is just a cat burglar who owns a lot of cats, has a cat theme, and knows martial arts and parkour. This all just feels like a weirdly unnecessary.

Also, big cats mostly fight reeeeeeally slowly. They’re so strong that most of it just looks like they’re leaning into each other, but they’re actually causing serious injury and pain. I don’t think that would be dynamic in a comic action movie

Listened to the Blackhat episode of Blank Check yesterday. They mentioned how Viola Davis talking about watching cats to improve her acting. I’m paraphrasing because I don’t remember exactly but it was like how cats are the best actors because you can never tell if they’re going to attack or scamper until the last second. If it’s good enough for Viola Davis, I won’t knock it.

Unlike Jared Leto, Kravitz is an incredibly one-dimensional actor.

Nothing says fun super hero movie like taking the inspiration for the super hero from a mentally unwell, heroin addicted rock star who killed himself by blowing his brains out with a rifle.

who killed himself by blowing his brains out with a rifle.
That’s certainly one theory. Not the only one of course.

“Nothing says fun super hero movie”

Has anyone, anywhere described this movie as “fun”? Have you watched the trailers and somehow thought this movie was aiming for “fun”?

I’ll say this for Batman, though: with the lights out, he *is* dangerous.

Batman’s whole schtick is being mentally unwell. Hell, he dresses up as a bat-person and fights a clown, a crocodile person and a man made of clay. For all we know Bruce Wayne is actually the one in Arkham, strapped in a straight jacket and ranting about how he fights scarecrows and penguins. Meanwhile men with clipboards shake their heads and take extensive notes.

Sorry but the Academy only considers the Joker for Oscars.

Not as interesting as this role-swap.  I’d watch a whole movie like this.

“I’d watch a whole movie like this.”

You get that the gender-swapped version of a Catwoman using her sexuality on Batman would be Batman raping Catwoman, right?

That’s the movie you’d watch, is it?

“Pattinson reportedly found inspiration in ‘90s rock star Kurt Cobain.”

Describing someone as having a “Kurt Cobain thing” is not the same as that person being inspired by Kobain.

Whatever floats her boat. We have already had two Catwoman origin films. Hope this one’s better than the last one.

we talked about what is actually possible when you’re my size, and Batman’s so much stronger than me.yeah but he’s wearing like 80+ lbs of stuff including a cape and he limited head/neck movement and is wearing 3 inch high boots. i think selina will be just fine even with the high heels..

Try giving Dr. Mittens a flea bath in the kitchen sink.  That’s what a fighting mad cat looks like.

  • igotlickfootagain-av says:

Due to a miscommunication, Kravitz and Alonzo were initially watching clips from ‘Cats (2019)’, leading them to film a since scrapped scene where Selina fights a gang of cockroaches with human faces.

To paraphrase Sir Laurence Olivier:My dear girl, why don’t you just try acting?
