The 2021 Gotham Awards were held in Lower Manhattan and The A.V. Club got exclusive backstage access and a special portrait studio set up for the event. The annual New York ceremony, which recognizes independent film, marked the very beginning of what is sure to be a thrilling awards season.

Some of the evening’s biggest winners were Maggie Gyllenhaal for her film The Lost Daughter, the film CODA, the documentary Philly DA, and of course, global favorite and Netflix smash hit Squid Game.

Many of the presenters, performers, and directors—fresh from taking the big stage—stopped by the AVC’s portrait studio to snap a few photos, including Nicolas Cage, Forest Whittaker, Rachel Sennott, Natalie Morales, and the cast of Reservation Dogs, to name just a few.

The yearbook photo backdrop and the how-long-do-I-have-to-hold-this looks perfectly capture the forgettably generic nature of the Gotham Awards.

Nice! I think it’s the only time in my life I’ve seen “Nicholas Cage: Regular Guy”, and actually, he wears it quite well.

Ha, I thought from the headline those were portraits of AVC staff taken at the event (right photo, top left looks kind of like Dowd??) and was immediately confused yet super hyped that Nicholas Cage had joined the team.

I like this, if only because I really can’t recall ever seeing this kind of family portrait style aesthetic used before in events like this. It’s like the anti–red-carpet.

I like this idea but I think they should do it with 1980s laser backgrounds, double exposures, and a rack of terrible clothes like oversized glasses frames, giant cardigans, etc.
