Now that awards season is in full swing stateside, it’s time to check out what films are resonating across the pond. The 2023 BAFTA nominations were announced on Thursday, and there are some notable differences in the nominee list from some of the American accolades that have been distributed thus far.

Most prominently, the BAFTA voters have lavished love upon Netflix’s All Quiet On The Western Front, which garnered 14 nominations including Best Film, Director, and Adapted Screenplay. Per Deadline, it’s the most BAFTA nominations for a non-English language film since Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in 2001. (Speaking of, Michelle Yeoh is nominated for Leading Actress—in Everything Everywhere All At Once—for the first time since Crouching Tiger 22 years ago.) Compare that to the Golden Globes, where the German film was only nominated in the foreign language category, an award that eventually went to Argentina, 1985.

Other noteworthy diversions include a near shut-out for Steven Spielberg’s The Fablemans, which is only represented in the Original Screenplay category. The directing category is also a very different race, with nominations for Edward Berger (All Quiet On The Western Front), Park Chan-wook (Decision To Leave), Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King), and Todd Field (TÁR), as well as Martin McDonagh (Banshees Of Inisherin) and Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (Everything Everywhere).

As Deadline notes, the variety of nominees for this year’s BAFTAs appears to be the result of a concerted effort to implement changes after facing criticism for lack of diversity. (In 2021, all 20 of the ceremony’s acting nominees were white.) In the last three years, the BAFTAs have expanded their membership as well as the acting and directing categories and introduced a long-list system to help boost viewership of submitted films.

The 2023 BAFTAs, hosted by Richard E. Grant, will take place on February 19, 2023. Scroll on for a full list of nominations.

All Quiet was an okay movie. I just couldn’t get past the dubbing of British voices over German actors.

    • wildchoir-av says:

…uhhh so why did you watch the dubbed version then?

    • mimomisu-av says:

Maybe, next time, you can try to choose to original version. in German. As intended. On Netflix. But I don’t want to sound too harsh. You’re definitely not the only one who missed it.

  • teageegeepea-av says:

Other noteworthy diversions include a near shut-out for Steven Spielberg’s The Fablemans, which is only represented in the Original Screenplay category. It had already been shut out of some other lists like Director prior to the nominations.

I liked the beginning of All Quiet on the Western Front a lot, but the end was disappointing. The final battle scenes — Tanks! Flamethrowers! An assault right before the 11 am armistice! — undermined the purpose of the book, which focused less on dramatic moments and more in the grinding tedium, degradation, and inhumanity of World War I.  I’m also not sure the scenes regarding the negotiation of the armistice added anything, and jumping away from the perspective of a single soldier had significant drawbacks.
