After going dark last year, a seemingly repentant Golden Globe Awards returned this year in a bid to win back Hollywood and viewers. Host Jerrod Carmichael, who kicked things off by addressing the controversies that have embroiled the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, eventually gave way to the stars in the room, some gloriously unhinged acceptance speeches, and the show did its best to live up to its reputation as Hollywood’s biggest party. Here then are some of the best, worst, and most surprising moments from the Golden Globes’ comeback.

Rather than brushing off the controversy that kept the Golden Globes off the air last year, Jarrod Carmichael took on the issue directly in his monologue. He pointed out that they didn’t have a single Black member until George Floyd died. “I’m here because I’m Black,” he said, before telling the story of getting the call inviting him to host. “One minute you’re making mint tea, the next you’re invited to be the Black face of an embattled white organization.” Carmichael pulled no punches, admitting that he took the job for the money (a cool $500k, he revealed) after consulting a Black friend. It was a bit awkward at times, but it would have been even more awkward not to mention it.

The best speech was by Ke Huy Quan. Everyone loves a comeback story but more importantly I loved how humble, grateful, and emotional he was, was a joy to watch. It was just great seeing the real emotions and happiness of the whole EEAAO crew was great.

The funniest speech by far was Jennifer Coolidge. She is a natural comedian. I would love to hang out with her.

The more I see Colin Farrell, he just seems like a decent and genuine person despite being an A-list star with an amazing talent.

Now I’m looking forward to the Oscars and hopefully many of the winners will carry the momentum to it.

I missed the GG but if this is about Ree Ree (sp?) not winning, isn’t’ that her picture?

  • cosmicghostrider-av says:

I get a good laugh from the A.V. Club being like “Are the Golden Globes even relevant anymore?” to full coverage of the Golden Globes on the night of. That’s peak A.V. Club. I really hope we see an article about Brendan Fraser tomorrow, that would be the cherry.

    • killa-k-av says:

“Is the AV Club relevant anymore?”*continues commenting for years*

    • erictan04-av says:

Agreed. They’re not. I don’t care about the Oscars either, but at least they’re awarded by people in the industry and the peers of the nominees. These are just foreign reporters who are not in the industry at all.

  • cosmicghostrider-av says:

    I’d fuck Angela Bassett.

  • cosmicghostrider-av says:

So who wants to in with me that all the Brendan Fraser stans are gonna be disappointed when Colin “its his year” Farrell steals Best Actor at the Oscars?

    • cosmicghostrider-av says:

Remind me which film he was nominated for again? After Yang or Banshees of Inisherin. Or did his prothestics in The Batman win the gold this year?

      • cosmicghostrider-av says:

I’m sorry Colin Ferrall has been the biggest workman actor since he did S.W.A.T. in the early 2000s. Colin Ferrall winning this year is like, a fact.

        • cosmicghostrider-av says:

Sorry not sorry to all who think Brendan Fraser can swoop in and steal that after not being active in Hollywood for ten years. We get it he used to be hot.

          • cura-te-ipsum-av says:

Ke Huy Quan hadn’t been in front of the screen for about 20 and he’s sweeping all before him so far. How long you’ve been in or out has nothing to do with it.

          • themightymanotaur-av says:

Hey Ke Huy Quan swooped in after 20 years for a Best Supporting Globe.

          • racj1982-av says:

The man went through a lot in his life and only in recent years has he been able to break free from it. Including calling out a now former golden globe member for sexual harassment against him. And he said he wasn’t going. Thus, Brendan Frasier not winning a golden globe is not shocking and means nothing.

Its annoying , the one year someone actually deserving is nominated…and there’s 2 of them!)

    • srgntpep-av says:

He was great in that and all, but I’m not sure I understand the over the top praise for Banshees. I enjoyed it, and everyone in it was very good, but it’s just sort of an odd little movie, isn’t it? Colin Farrell’s speech was second only to Jennifer Coolidge’s, so I’m okay with him winning more awards, but I’m thinking I need to watch it again to see if I can figure out what I’m missing…

.“How much fun would it have been to see some of them perform their nominated songs on the stage? We didn’t even get to hear more than a brief snippet of them.”Maybe…..but if they had truly played the full version of EVERY nominated song on-air tonight, the show would probably STILL be running…..Still WAY too many “non-important” (to we, the television audience at home) categories being awarded on-air for this (mostly) meaningless award……pull out all the stops at The Oscars, and try to keep ‘em moving (within reason) on that night…..but for this one, just have the major acting (and supporting) awards/best song/direction/and best picture awards, and then call it a night (and with that few awards to hand out, they could then afford to give the winners more than 20 seconds for each of their acceptance speeches….in what often becomes the most memorable parts of most of these shows!)….and who knows……with a format like that, then maybe they’ll even have enough to time to have the artists play the FULL version of all their nominated songs !! .

I can’t believe Costner and House of the Dragons won. Did HFPA even watch the nominees for tv shows this year? Odenkirck or Scott ABSOLUTELY deserved it this year.

  • bio-wd-av says:

Important question, did Better Call Saul get the Wire treatment and actually never win at the Golden Globes and Emmys?  Because if so holy fucking shit what.

    • gargsy-av says:

No, it didn’t, because The Wire is one of the top TV dramas of all time and BCS is a pretty OK spin-off.

    • jackstark211-av says:

Good fucking question.  That would be insane.

    • pete-worst-av says:

Just checked, and the only Emmys BCS has won was for the online promotional shorts like Kim’s ethics training video and what not. Emmy nominations? Yeah, it got 46 of those. Golden Globes is similar – six nominations (four of which were Odenkirk’s), zero wins. Madness.

  • alferd-packer-av says:

    bwaahaahhahahahahahahahahahahahahhhaaaahahaahaaaaaaaaa…  no.

    • beni00799-av says:

It’s a question of taste. HoD was excellent and Better Call Saul is certainly very good also but I have zero interest in it. Anyway Severance was the best show by far.

    • luasdublin-av says:

Its better than ‘royalty fan wank: the Series ‘ ( AKA The Crown* ), but not a patch on Severance or BCS .(I have no opinion on Ozark as despite it being around for years I’ve never seen it , nor know anyone else who has ..I mean it’s probably….fine..)( or as the Windsor Saxe Coburg Gotha’s pronounce it ‘Thuh Crine”)

      • activetrollcano-av says:

I’m gonna say that the last season of BCS isn’t its best, but unfortunately, this was the only time it was nominated for Best Drama Television Series. All the other times it was nominated for a Golden Globe it was Bob Odenkirk in the running for Best Performance by an Actor, but he never won. The show did win a Golden Globe for Best Original Score back in 2017, but then that’s it. While I did enjoy BCS’s last season, I can’t say that Season 6 it was better than HotD’s first season… Had it been season 4 for BCS on the table then I’d probably side with BCS, which is why I’m more mad about the fact that it never received a nomination for Best Drama Television Series until now… The final season just barely stood a chance.

        • devf--disqus-av says:

I’d say the first half of season 6 was merely very good, but the second half was Better Call Saul at its absolute best. I haven’t seen any of the other nominated series aside from Severance, but BCS would’ve had my vote for definitively sticking the landing.

      • yables-av says:

This last season of Ozark was not good: they’d clearly run out of ideas and didn’t know how to effectively end the series. It’s nomination here was definitely for the series as a whole, which did have some great episodes and awesome characters. I still think Ozark was essentially a more popular version of Bloodline, a show which never really got adequate credit for the quality piece that it was.

    • bs-leblanc-av says:

I made this comment on the other AVC review, but I think they piped in applause for the HOTD win. Best video I could find only shows right when they get to the stage (you can see no one is clapping) but during the whole walk up, there were only a few people applauding.

      • srgntpep-av says:

I mean, even the winner knew Severance was better (and I’m fully convinced he–like myself–100% expected Severance to win).  That was the biggest robbery of the entire night.

      • nrgrabe-av says:

The sound levels were strange. Like when the host spoke, there was a ton of, maybe intended, background noise?  It was really distracting.

    • erictan04-av says:

It’s the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. What they like or dislike is mostly irrelevant… It’s not awards given by peers like AMPAS and Oscars.

    • breakingjens-av says:

Sadest joke of the evening. Beside Kostner won over Odenkirk. Who are these jury people? Ridiculous decisions.

  • killa-k-av says:

I figured io9 would be elated a “genre” show won Best Drama. They relegated it to the bottom of a post about Everything, Everywhere’s wins. Shows what I know!

  • the-misanthrope-av says:

The only clip packages we got were the ones for Ryan Murphy and Eddie Murphy in advance of their lifetime achievement awards.I understand Eddie Murphy for the award, but Ryan Murphy only been in the business since the late 90s.  He seems like a good guy, but that’s not really a lifetime worth of acheivement, unless “just old enough to drink” is a lifetime.  Are they expecting him to die soon or something?!?

    • tvcr-av says:

I’m no Ryan Murphy fan, but he’s had a significant impact, especially in casting queer people and other minorities. I think he’s achieved as much as a lot of people do in a lifetime, and fairly consistently.

    • racj1982-av says:

The output of work he has produced for tv is insane with multiple landmark/groundbreaking series. He doesn’t JUST crank shit out but a chunk of it has an impact. And he’s been doing this through like three different ages of tv evolution. The man deserves his flowers.

    • headlessbodyintoplessbar-av says:

Plus, that was one of the best acceptance speeches I have ever seen.

  • dpc61820-av says:

Actually, Andor and The Patient were the best shows of the year. But whatever… Who are the HFPA people and why would anyone want to get their award? This organization has no credibility whatsoever as an arbiter of quality. I get the desire to focus on the glitzy party. Fine. Who wore what? Who made a funny remark? Who flirted with whom? Go ahead and report that. But the awards? Give me a break! Look who decided these awards. They! Are! Corrupt! No credibility.

    • yables-av says:

Never heard of The Patient but I like the premise! Analyze This/In Treatment meets Silence of the Lambs/Hannibal? The elevator pitch works on me! Will watch.

      • gargsy-av says:

“Analyze This/In Treatment meets Silence of the Lambs/Hannibal?”

        No.

      • dpc61820-av says:

It’s very good! Most episodes are about 30 minutes (it’s very much a drama, despite the sitcom-like timeslot), so it’s very tight. The ending is deeply satisfying and is an ending — there will be no season 2. From the creators of The Americans. Very different than that, but as good (and substantially lower investment with a finite 10 episodes / about 5 hours total runtime). I watched the first few episodes as they dropped weekly, but then quit knowing I couldn’t bear to be left on the edge of my seat anymore, then binged the last half of the season when it was all out. It’s emotional, provocative (makes you think about what a good life is and how to live it, how to be a better member to your own family, to value those you love even when you don’t see things the same way they do, lots more), occasionally slightly funny (*not* a comedy, but not humorless either). It’s super Jewish, but I think universally interesting. (I grew up Roman Catholic, no longer affiliated with that organization. As a non-Jew, I think I understood what I needed to and connected deeply with the material. You definitely don’t need to be Jewish to appreciate the show.)

    • pete-worst-av says:

It’s just another TV show. Turn it off if you don’t care about it..

  • yeah40-av says:

So many winners – Even winners of the “Big Categories” who usually get extra time – were played off mere seconds into their speeches, while presenters got to go on and on with dreadfully unfunny bits. Jennifer Coolidge’s schtick is especially getting old.

  • teageegeepea-av says:

It’s particularly funny for Miguel Sapochnik to accept the award for House of the Dragon when he already quit the show.

  • schmilco-av says:

I don’t blame the show for playing people off. Most of the nominees are professionals, and I’m sure they’re told in advance how much time they’ll have for a speech. And yet they all think they’re the ones who will be allowed to go over.
Practice your speech ahead of time. Make sure the things you really want to say (including the people you really want to thank) come first. And I’m sorry, but you don’t have time to tell a story and thank people. Choose one or the other.
Also, if there are more than one of you in your group, choose one person to accept the award on behalf of all of you. Write your speech together so it speaks for all of you.
Maybe if the speeches were shorter, there would be more time for clips of the nominees, which, in my opinion, is the best way to celebrate their achievements.

    • kirivinokurjr-av says:

As much as I love Michelle Yeoh as an actress, it just looked icky how she told someone to shut up I’m sure both because she actually did want more time but also for a laugh. I didn’t catch everyone trying to ignore the music, but I saw Farrell and at least he was being goofy about it.  These are real people they’re snapping at and those people working the production are in no position to talk back at movie stars. You get an allotted speech time for these live broadcasts and like you said they should just prepare. If it poses a problem, it’s not the poor production people’s fault. People should just be nicer.

      • amessagetorudy-av says:

Same. I wrote that elsewhere too. It was especially icky when I thought it she was saying it to the sole Asian piano player they kept showing out-to and in-from commercials. Although later I thought they said it was recorded music playing but… I don’t know. Early on it was just piano “shut up” music, and later it sounded like a whole orchestra.

      • srgntpep-av says:

They actually aren’t real people, though–the host explained that it was a tape (so no one would take it out on the piano player).  I was trying to picture the days of when it was an orchestra (and maybe it still is at the Oscars?)–do those guys get annoyed as hell that it’s their job to play it and so many people just ignore them?  “Oh, you’re gonna ignore us, too?  That’s it horns, crank it up!!!”

        • kirivinokurjr-av says:

It wasn’t the pianist and the music may be prerecorded, but there are people pressing play in the booth.  I know people disagree, but my feeling is that they’re not scolding the building; they’re scolding a person or a team of people.  I just found it off-putting especially given the status gap.

    • amessagetorudy-av says:

Problem was, the first couple of winners went on and on unfettered, THEN they started playing people like Michelle Yeoh which, if you’re going to do that, do it from the get-go. I can kinda see later winners getting pissed that THEY were getting the “STFU” music.

    • naturalstatereb-av says:

Agree.  This may be their moment in the sun, but it’s just one moment in what is often a 3 or 4 hours slugfest.

  • markagrudzinski-av says:
