Three of these comics, Toxic Avenger, Darkman, and Men In Black are Marvel. They take place outside of the 616 superhero continuity, but they are still published by Marvel.
I’m guessing Darkman and The Toxic Avenger get in because they were original superhero movies first, with the (Marvel) comics coming afterwards. The Men in Black was first published by Aircel Comics, at that time an imprint of Malibu Comics, which was later bought by Marvel, so I would argue it qualifies as well.
And the list only goes back 40 years, ignoring decades of film history. Unfortunately this is the standard ‘bare minimum’ level of research and content we’ve all come to expect from the AV Club recently.
“We don’t care if this movie has already been already been [sic] on one of our lists, it’s great”Some real care and attention to detail went into making this one.
No mention of Scott Pilgrim, Spawn, The Spirit, The Phantom, 30 Days of (series), Bulletproof Monk, The Crow series, From Hell or A History of Violence?
If I named every single comic book/superhero movie that isn’t Marvel or DC, I would still be writing making this video. And the Spawn movie really leaves a lot to be desired…
I guess The Rocketeer isn’t considered a “superhero” in the traditional sense, but is he any less of a superhero than Batman? Batman doesn’t have powers either. At the time, I thought The Rocketeer movie was one of the closest adaptions from comic to film. I think it holds up and is a lot of fun.
I really enjoy Kick Ass (the film is less try-hard edge-lord than the graphic novel), I’d generally list it higher than most of the MCU films I’ve seen.
I’d really love to see some of the Ed Brubaker series made in to films like Velvet or Criminal, though I think one of those may technically be Marvel

You are correct.
one day hopefully darktyme will be up there
For anyone who hates video content (like me), the list was:
Dark Man
The Toxic Adventure
Tales From The Crypt
The Crow
Men In Black
And yeah, that’s all they could be bothered to come up with, ignoring about 100 other great movies based on non-DC or Marvel fare.

Also didn’t Marvel buy Malibu Comics several years before the Men in Black film came out, so isn’t MIB technically a Marvel film?
A list of 5 comic book movies and none of them are the 1990 TMNT movie. The fuck?

Or even a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles flick?

[Obligatory post lamenting an absence from the list]The lack of Mystery Men disturbs me greatly.

My #1 is Hellboy, from Dark Horse Comics. Shout-out to Ron Perlman!
Missed the Hellboy films.
