This groundswell of support could mean the Ed Grimley movie is closer to being made than ever!

As I said to Frank Conniff, is it ok if I just hate Jiminy Glick but like everything else he’s done?

  • dapoot-av says:

Finally someone pointed out Martin Short is an overrated loser. Send this trash back to Canada where all garbage belongs

  • officermilkcarton-av says:

Apparently Hamil digs him so much that he tried to get him a secret cameo in a white uniform for a Stars War, but he was a little Short for a stormtrooper.

  • maxtastrophe-av says:

I thought maybe the author of the op-ed was some kid looking for some easy outrage traffic. Turns out the dude looks like a sentient gin blossom who just can’t wait to tell you about his model trains.

  • stevennorwood-av says:

Why someone thought a mean-spirited hit piece on Martin Short in 2023 was a good idea, I do not understand.

  • michelle-fauxcault-av says:

I said this yesterday in the comments for the post about the Louis C.K. doc, but, again, to me Dan Kois’s piece doesn’t read nearly as acidic towards Short as people have made it out to be. It needed a clearer thesis, an editor, and a much better title, but even as is it’s not a takedown piece by any means. It’s more like Kois publicly wrestling with why he has sometimes found Short to be annoying and sometimes found him to be funny. It’s actually pretty warm at times to both Short and his comedy. Not that nuance and ambivalence have ever enjoyed a premium online (or anywhere), but the backlash seems overwrought and ill-founded, and that’s coming from someone who very much enjoys Short’s comedy.

I need to read the piece, because that’s exactly how I feel about him. He’s a bit like Mike Myers for me — very out-there ideas that sometimes land incredibly well and sometimes flounder.

I’m a diehard Martin Short fan (other than the creepy kid movie) and a hot-to-cold Mike Myers fan, but find myself perpetually rooting for them both. The Pentaverate or whatever it was called made that a lot tougher, though.

        • browza-av says:

I’ve watched some of that. I want to like it, but it gets sidetracked spending minutes at a time on dick puns instead of developing the really promising premise.

      • frankwalkerbarr-av says:

Well, both Myers and Short are Canadians (and even Ontarians) And the less said about Clifford (the dinosaur-loving boy rather than the big red dog) the better!

    • taco-emoji-av says:

Yeah Slate seems to be doing this lately. They published a piece about an oft-banned book with a head/subhead that seemed pro-banning, but then you read the piece and it’s just the writer struggling with his personal hang-ups while reading this very explicit (but educational) sex-ed book. The headline was way more inflammatory than the piece.

      • babytile-av says:

For a site that has had decent journalistic bona fides (besides the interminable advice columns and whatever the fuck Luke Winkie is doing), Slate headlines have always been questionable compared to the actual content of the piece and are often literal click bait.

Ffs, why can’t I check another browser and have the video keep playing?!
It’s like the middle ages round here.

  • murrychang-av says:

    Jiminy Glick is goddamn hilarious

  • prcomment-av says:

Whenever I see Joel Osteen he just seems like one of Martin Short’s worst characters.

  • browza-av says:

He seems to have a fascination with old Hollywood/Broadway. So many of his characters are from it or talk about it, and that’s just a subject that bores me. And Grimley is just Canadian Pee Wee. But I like most of his movies (not Father of the Bride, I hate silly foreign accents. See also: the guy in Ghostbusters 2).

    • precious-roy-av says:

I found him entertaining on Damages despite the fact I found the show itself rather hit or miss. I got a kick out of him as the perverted lawyer on Weeds even though that season was garbage.

      • browza-av says:

I haven’t seen those. But he’s not bad when he does get out of his wheelhouse a bit, like Mars Attacks, and I think I saw him on one of the police procedurals. InnerSpace is a favorite of mine. Perfect for him — it reigns him in a lot but also gives him some opportunities for his physical stuff.

  • drew8mr-av says:

He got an almost lifetime pass from me for the SCTV skit where he’s Robin Williams doing a Tang commercial. And the SNL synchronized swimming bit with Harry Shearer. But he’s one of those dudes that was perfect for 15 minutes on Carson, a little goes a long way.

  • apewhohathnoname-av says:

    I like him:

  • mikolesquiz-av says:

He’s pretty funny in interviews and such, if strongly skewing towards refuge-in-audacity meanness. When he’s playing a character? Well, as a comedian, he’s a pretty decent dramatic actor.
