You know how it is: You’ve got two different friend groups, formed at two different points in your life, and you’re a little nervous about how they’re going to intersect. Will everyone be chill? Can you handle being the social nexus for these colliding worlds? Will two different guys who each have a reputation as “the funny Dave” be able to co-exist?

Thus, we have to assume, it is with Adam Wingard, his old friend Dan Stevens, and his new friend Godzilla—both known, in industry circles, for their big and powerful personalities. Kudos to Wingard, then, for making the plunge, mashing together his former The Guest star with the cast of his upcoming kaiju blockbuster Godzilla Vs. Kong 2.

This is per Deadline, which reports that Stevens is the first major addition to the cast of said film, the follow-up to last year’s Wingard-directed “pretty good despite the pandemic of it all” hit. There’s no word on who Stevens will play in GVK2, although if we had to guess, “Someone kind of intense and probably at least a little evil” would be our kneejerk response. Godzilla, meanwhile, will play himself per usual, serving alongside his long-time co-worker King Kong and also, we dunno, Gamera, maybe?

Stevens has worked mostly in TV in recent years, notably in his X-Men show Legion, plus Starz’s Gaslit, and also, we’re just now remembering, that HBO cartoon show The Prince that the network flushed onto HBO Max as quickly as it possibly could.

That being said: If anyone was going to get Stevens back into theaters, it would likely be Wingard, whose The Guest taught a whole generation of indie horror fans that the actor had significantly more going on than just being the romantic lead on Downton Abbey. This’ll be the pair’s first professional reunion since the release of the 2014 film.

Speaking of horror films that Dan Stevens has been in, I loved him in “Apostle” which also has a Godzilla connection, as it was directed by Gareth Evans, which is close enough to Gareth Andrews for me to almost get them conflated before I published this. Anyway, if you haven’t seen Apostle or Gareth A’s Godzilla, I recommend finding a way to stream both, especially in order to fast forward through the mopey human scenes of the latter.

Dan Stevens on live TV is a national fucking treasure:

As visually gorgeous as those films are, I’m surprised they’re making another because it never felt like there was a huge response each time they released one. I just hope they can get rid of the over-emoting kid from Stranger Things.

I think the Monsterverse (that’s what they call it?) movies have a smaller but very vocal and dedicated fanbase. They’re never going to do Marvel / Star Wars numbers, and whatever novelty bump they had by being modern reboots is gone now, but they can still be fun movies worth going to the theater for.

Oh, I’m definitely a fan. But I grew up on OG Godzilla/Mothra/etc films, so the seed was planted early for me.

Dan Stevens is psycho Brad Cooper.

Won’t be Gamera, since he / she / it is owned by Daiei Motion Picture Company, and despite heartfelt pleas from fans for decades, Toho, owners of Godzilla, won’t enter into a co-production with a rival Japanese kaiju producer.

I want Biolante just because I always thought that was the coolest looking kaiju.

      • diabolik7-av says:

I had the pleasure of seeing that on a big screen. It really looks terrific, and was the result of a competition held by Toho to come up with the concept and rough design of Godzilla’s next opponent, the winner being a Tokyo dentist.

These Godzilla movies are fucking embarrassingly bad.

  • bio-wd-av says:

Wait there’s going to be Godzilla V Kong 2?  What…

  • systemmastert-av says:

I just hope they maintain the pace of revelations about the world. There’s a monster. There’s a whole big island of monsters. There’s dozens of monsters all over and they all are either asleep or awake based on whether or not the head monster is an asshole also Atlantis was real. The Hollow Fucking Earth is real and the asshole monster from the last one is alive even if he’s just a skull and oh no the skull hacked Mechagodzilla oh and King Kong is the king of a dead kaiju ape civilization.

Like if this one doesn’t have Dan Stevens as some sort of adventurer real estate agent trying to sell people plots of the hollow Earth, only to discover there’s an even hollower Earth that’s also Space Hell, I’ll be slightly disappointed.

  • butterbattlepacifist-av says:

Man, I was hoping for a Kong stand-alone thing where he journeys through the hollow earth to find his family.

I need Godzilla Vs. Guest, now please
