The original series starred Kyle Chandler as a guy who got tomorrow's newspaper today

Alice Eve has signed on to star in the pilot for CBS’s upcoming revival of ’90s supernatural drama Early Edition, in which she’ll be tasked with the seemingly fantastical responsibility of trying to explain to people in 2022 what a newspaper is.

Wait, no: Eve will actually be gifted a copy of tomorrow’s newspaper today, much as Kyle Chandler was lo so many years before, and thus get stuck trying to figure out how to prevent all the tragedies that crop up on the front page. One twist, though, is that Eve’s character Beth will be closely connected to the news herself—as a producer for a Seattle news station, she’ll have to balance her own desire for scoops with the needs imposed by her supernatural duties.

The Early Edition reboot is being headed up by Melissa Glenn, whose last big credit was a writing/producing role on CBS’s Zoo, the TV show in which all animals fight all human beings. The original series was created Ian Abrams, Patrick Q. Page, and Vik Rubenfeld, and, while it would probably be inaccurate to say it launched Chandler to superstardom—he won a Saturn Award for that one, not a Coach Taylor-style Emmy—it was a well-received spin on light TV supernatural drama from 1997 to 2000.

The new series, like the original, is being aimed at CBS. Eve, meanwhile, has been working pretty extensively in TV of late; she’s currently in post-production on supernatural thriller The Power for Amazon Prime Video, and is still (relatively) fresh off Julian Fellowes’ 2020 period drama Belgravia. No word yet on who’ll be joining her for the pilot—the logline mentions a news mentor who pushes her to consider the human element of her stories—or, more importantly, what kind of cat will be chosen to deliver the paper to her every day.

This is going to be terrible for many, many reasons. Willing to bet it’ll cross over with Magnum PI, too, thus placing it in the NCIS-verse.
Fun fact: The original takes place in the same universe as Walker, Texas Ranger, as well as Martial Law, that old Not!Rush Hour show starring Sammo Hung and, in the second season, Arsenio Hall.

YES it did and it was glorious.  We needed a massive crossover where the cat imbues Kyle Chandler with martial arts ability and he, Walker, and Sammo roundhouse kick an alien invasion or something like that

Loved the original. Love Alice Eve, despite her webbed feat (move reference!). Count me in!!

I used to watch Waking the Dead a lot but I never made the connection with Trevor Eve until he played her father in that film.

  • Shampyon-av says:

My question is: Is this a fresh slate reboot, or a continuation reboot? Because the original series established the paper as something that gets passed down through the ages. There were recipients before Kyle Chandler’s character, and the series implied a young girl named Lindsay would take it over when he couldn’t do the work any more. So… is Beth Lindsay? Lindsay’s heir? Or is this a whole new continuity?Perhaps more importantly: Will the paper still come with a grumpy little kitty kat?

I’m not sure I’m ready for NCIS: LA and Walker, Texas Ranger to be in the same universe.

The show also featured a totally different guy in NYC who got a paper there, so assuming Eve isn’t Lindsay, that doesn’t mean they couldn’t fold Gary in someday. What’s weirder is the notion of the character being involved with the news herself. (Apart from the general weirdness of her being the only person in her generation often looking at a newspaper, that is.) A key feature of the original show is what a full-time job it was.

No. This is a reboot. There is no cat. The news will come in the form of a website. The yet unnamed news website is, unfortunately, locked behind a paywall and, as a result, many, many people die.

Wow, turns out there are lore nerds for……..Early Edition. Fascinating

OMG I now know one other person who watched this show! This was the show that introduced me to Kyle Chandler. I wish we got at least three more seasons with him.

    Octogenarians around the nation, rejoice!

  • milligna000-av says:

She definitely seems like the sort of actor who specializes in pilots that don’t go to series

  • sketchesbyboze-av says:

She was in an episode of Poirot (Murder on the Blue Train), she’s so hot!

  • mattthecatania-av says:

Hopefully this doesn’t preclude Alice Eve from reprising Typhoid Mary in the MCU.

  • pocrow-av says:

This fits. TV producers are avid readers of local newspapers, so that the TV stations can, a day later, pretend they broke the stories themselves.

  • herewegoooooo-av says:

I’ve side-eyed her ever since she referred to Caitlyn Jenner (who I know is not a good person) as playing at being a woman.

  • docprof-av says:

Oh man, the stories in tomorrow’s newspaper might only be a few hours out of date unlike how horribly out of date today’s newspaper is by the time it hits your door.

    • bc222-av says:

It’s 2022. She works in the news business, so half the peoply she talks to won’t believe her. And even if what she warns will happen actually happens, they’ll accuse this news producer of making up her own news. They should’ve just named the character Cassandra.

  • dancalling-av says:

Honestly, this maybe the single most reboot-able TV series. Its been a long time and I don’t remember it being superpopular when it was on so it isn’t like there is alot of baggage. It is a solid concept that gives alot of wiggle room to reinvent the show while being true to the original.I will definitely watch this.
