Few television characters have rocketed into the zeitgeist like Che Diaz. The non-binary lesiban comedian played by Grey’s Anatomy’s Sara Ramirez shook everything up on the Sex And The City spin-off And Just Like That…, becoming the most divisive and talked-about addition to the beloved, well-established cast. Che Diaz’s comedy wasn’t funny; Che Diaz’s social justice warrior persona was obnoxious. Che Diaz ruined Miranda’s (Cynthia Nixon) marriage and the entire show. Che Diaz is no more. Long live Che Diaz.

While the news of their departure hasn’t been officially confirmed by Max, Ramirez hinted at the exit on their Instagram page in a political post. “Our industry is so duplicitous. While they give awards away, casting directors and agents are making blacklists of actors and workers who post anything in support of Palestinians in Gaza to ensure they will not work again. While they lift up some of their own clients who have spoken up against this genocide, they are firing and letting others who have smaller platforms go,” Ramirez wrote in part after the Emmy awards. “It’s wild how performative so many in Hollywood are. Even more performative than the last character I played.”

Ramirez’s post caused a stir online less so for the pro-Palestinian message and more at the implication they were no longer playing the character of Che Diaz. (“Don’t let the tabloids distract you from what’s happening in Gaza. Really nice try, though,” Ramirez added after their post got picked up by several media outlets.) Some surmised from the post that Ramirez’s support for Palestine was the reason they were no longer part of And Just Like That…. Sure, Cynthia Nixon has also publicly voiced support for Palestine, but Nixon is one of the core cast members of the show and has relatively more power in the industry than Ramirez—who is perhaps positioning themselves as one of the actors with “smaller platforms” being fired.

But a source for The Daily Mail tells a different story, suggesting Che Diaz was written out for simply being Che Diaz. “Sara was not fired because they support Palestine and the cease fire. Sara was fired because Che brought nothing to the show anymore. They were on the chopping block since last season,” this source said. “After Che split with Miranda, the character really held no value anymore and fans found them annoying. The storyline as a struggling comedian was a waste of airtime and Sara knew it.” Even meaner: “Sara needs to accept that this is not Grey’s Anatomy, and her character was not a pivotal part of the storyline.”

Granted, Che was a pivotal part of And Just Like That… discourse over the course of the revival’s two seasons. And while Ramirez may now view Che as “performative,” they previously told The New York Times that they were “really proud of the representation that we’ve created. We have built a character who is a human being, who is imperfect, who’s complex, who is not here to be liked, who’s not here for anybody’s approval. They’re here to be themselves.” That said, Ramirez also stressed that “I’m also not in control of the writing,” and they aren’t actually Che Diaz. Now, it seems, nobody is.

    “The non-binary lesiban”

    Non-binary means they’re not a lesbian.

Also, fine, you don’t have editors, but maybe at LEAST employ some sort of spell checker.

Che was definitely annoying in S1. But in S2 she’s not nearly as annoying; much more grounded and relatable. Also the annoyance level of Miranda went so off the charts high perhaps Che’s just wasn’t as noticeable anymore.

They did reduce Che’s obnoxiousness by a bit. I don’t think Che even smoked in one crowded elevator in season 2! But the character was still awful.

I felt like she was pretty well redeemed of her overbearing nature in S2. We’d have been happy to have her in S3 if that’s happening.

I mean, I don´t know the industry inner workings, but Che shouldn’t even have been in the show in the first place.

AV Club correctly speculated that Ramirez was contractually obligated to appear in all of season 2. Now that it’s done, Che can disappear.

For Che Diaz to be divisive, wouldn’t someone have to like the character? Diaz isn’t divisive anymore than stubbing your doe is divisive.

The real-life actress sounds like an absolute gem of a person to have to be around too.

Who knows what this passive-aggressive crap is, but Cynthia Nixon has been super vocal on Palestine. It doesn’t make sense that Sara Ramirez would be fired for it. (And I do think some people have been fired over their views on Palestine.) The problem is that Che Diaz is terrible.

The Che Diaz character was the worst amalgamation of a “modern humans”. Horribly unfunny, unwitty, lame character. I was more offended by the flatness of the character than I am about the actor’s political views.

Looks like all the commie shitlib liberal arts majors will now have to burn all their $500 Che Diaz shirts at their next American flag burning meeting in the latte coffee shops.

    Good riddance.

I don’t watch this show but I read the recaps here. It sounded like Che just sucked horribly? So, there’s that. Also this: “non-binary lesiban [sic]”Quick question which I hope is not rude. Assuming this word was supposed to be “lesbian,” can a non-binary person be lesbian? Since a lesbian is a woman who is into woman, is a non-binary person considered to be a woman for these purposes? I had always thought not and would consider a non-binary person who is into women to not be either gay/lesbian or straight. Just…into women.

I try to be as good of an ally as I can be, but the LGBTQ acronym has gotten out of hand.  Can’t we just find something simpler?

  • privateirontfu-av says:

This person sounds genuinely insufferable. Maybe that’s the reason they got fired.

  • ryanlohner-av says:

Well, if the newspaper that once had the banner headline “Hurrah for the Blackshirts” says something is true, who are any of us to say it’s not?

  • gemma-loo-av says:

The character arc of Che Diaz (who must always be spoken of by their full name) was basically done at the end of season 2. It would make no sense to keep them around. I read this more an a general statement on what is happening in Hollywood right now instead of what happened to Sara themselves, but who knows.
